Job Description

Could you be the next Chair of Trustees at the Ann Craft Trust?

We’re looking for an inspirational leader who can help us continue our journey with the support of our CEO, staff group and fellow trustees. You’ll share our vision and already be aligned to our values – living them. You don’t need an in-depth knowledge of safeguarding, training or consultancy but you must be able to lead compassionately and with humility. You should be a strategic thinker and be able to maintain high standards of governance through empowering those around you.

You will, of course, have high levels of personal integrity. In addition to the usual duties of a trustee, which you can see in the full role profile, as chair you’ll also need to:

  • Provide strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring that the Ann Craft Trust achieves its vision, purpose and mission.
  • Work in partnership with the Chief Executive and team to achieve our mission.
  • Lead the board in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation.
  • Optimise the relationship between the board and our staff and volunteers.
  • Plan and chair the board meetings and the AGM, with others as appropriate.
  • Act as a spokesperson and figurehead for the Ann Craft Trust.

What are we looking for?

Essential skills and experience as a chair:

  • Experience of being a trustee.
  • A keen sense of strategic purpose.
  • An inclusive leadership style: able to inspire and support everyone to participate on an equal footing.
  • The ability to listen and engage effectively.
  • You are comfortable with challenge and debate and are able to encourage that in others whilst fostering a collaborative board environment.
  • Advocate - be able and willing to champion ACT’s work through personal networks, social media, and other channels.
  • A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Be responsive.

Other Essential Skills & Experience as a Trustee:

  • Commitment to the vision, purpose, mission and values of Ann Craft Trust:
    • A passionate commitment to the charity’s aims and the safeguarding of adults.
  • Governance Experience:
    • A sound understanding of governance, legal responsibilities, and compliance in the charity or corporate sectors.
  • Financial and Legal Acumen:
    • Understanding of financial oversight and legal responsibilities, with the ability to ensure compliance with charity law and company law.
  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Experience in contributing to strategic planning and organizational growth, ideally within the non-profit sector.
  • Integrity and Independence:
    • Demonstrate integrity, independent judgment, and a willingness to challenge and contribute constructively to board discussions.

What difference will you make?

This is an exciting time to join the Ann Craft Trust as Chair of Trustees as we continue to develop our governance arrangements and grow our operations at a steady, realistic pace. Providing strategic oversight of our governance, you'll help shape the future of the Ann Craft Trust.

Job Description

We are delighted to be working with Restore , an Oxfordshire-based charity that has been offering employment support to people with mental ill-health since 1977. Restore supports people - through recovery groups, coaching and learning - to take control of their own recovery, develop skills, and progress towards their own goals to live more fulfilling lives. It works within the community to increase knowledge, awareness and reduce stigma associated with mental ill health. Restore is also home to the Oxfordshire Recovery College for therapeutic peer learning and is an expert provider of formal mental health training.

Restore are now seeking to appoint a Chair of Trustees to provide leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees as their current Chair will step down later this year after ten years. The Chair will lead the Board of Trustees and work closely with the charity’s CEO and Executive Team to achieve its goals. They will have a strategic role ensuring that the organisation complies with its purpose, charity law and company law and that the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document.

The Chair will also ensure that the Board functions properly and that effective decisions are made and implemented. The Chair, alongside the CEO, acts as a spokesperson and advocate for the organisation.

The successful candidate is likely to have Board experience as a Chair or Deputy Chair although you may have been a Trustee for some years and now be looking for your next step. You will have excellent communication skills with great leadership qualities, the ability to confidently lead the Board, promote a collaborative team, deliver the vision of the charity and bring people together.

Essential skills:

  • Board-level leadership and governance
  • Strategic vision and sound independent judgement
  • Creative thinking and problem solving
  • An understanding of legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • A commitment to and passion for Restore’s aims and objectives
  • Integrity, objectivity, accountability, honesty and leadership.

Restore has been a fairly diverse board over the years and are still looking for ways to improve. The Board recognises the need to be entirely representative of the community it serves in Oxfordshire and surrounding areas and is keen for the board to reflect it. We welcome and encourage adult applicants of all ages, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, religion, neurodiversity and lived experience.

Time Commitments:

You’ll need to be able to:

  • Lead quarterly board meetings from 4:30pm to 7pm.
  • Lead the Annual General Meeting (AGM) alongside the CEO once per year.
  • Join the Finance Sub Committee and attend others as needed to contribute to discussion and decision-making.
  • Make visits to our recovery groups and head office teams to ensure you stay close to the services we are providing
  • Correspond by email to discuss items and make decisions between meetings
  • Attend other activities/fundraising events.

Meetings are currently hybrid, where attendance can be in person or online. Restore are aware that people who are working full-time or have family/other responsibilities may not always be able to travel to the meetings in person. It is important that Trustees are able to visit services, attend at least some meetings in person and have a connection with the community to which we deliver services. With this in mind, it’s unlikely that you will be based outside of Oxfordshire and its surrounding counties.

Tenure:

Trustees can join at any time during the year but are formally appointed at the November AGM for a three-year term at a time which can be extended twice (plus an extra year by agreement).

If you feel you have a passion for mental health and the aims of this charity, we would like to hear from you. For more information, please contact Sandra Smith, Associate Director, Charisma Charity Recruitment, or . Your application should be submitted through the Charisma website and include your CV and supporting statement.

Closing date: 2 November 2025 – Please apply asap as the client will be reviewing candidates and may close earlier if a suitable candidate is appointed.

Job Description

Trustees & Chair of The Board

Are you passionate about improving health and wellbeing outcomes, especially for older people? Do you value the “magic dust” of real human relationships?

Claremont Project is a mental health, arts and wellbeing charity based in Angel, Islington. We are seeking Trustees and also a Chair of the Board , to strengthen our charity as we step into our next chapter.

About us

Claremont has been around since 1907 and serves mostly older people through a powerful blend of social prescribing, low-cost psychotherapy and a programme of arts and wellbeing activities.

Claremont is a place of innovation and creativity, underpinned by a Relational Approach which emphasises real listening, self-awareness and an awareness of how we are being in relation to other people. We were the UK’s first Wellbeing Centre long before the term was ubiquitous; and in 1920s and 30s we ran programmes that became models for the Welfare State. At our beautiful and well-loved building at 24-27 White Lion Street, we nurture a vibrant, inclusive community, underpinned by our conviction that everybody matters.

About the roles

The Board of Trustees has overall responsibility for Claremont and ensures the charity is doing what it was set up to do. As set out by the Charity Commission, Trustees at Claremont are responsible for:

  • Advancing the charitable purposes of Claremont and ensuring we carry out its purposes for public benefit.
  • Ensuring Claremont complies with its governing document and the law.
  • Acting in Claremont’s best interests.
  • Managing Claremont’s resources responsibly.
  • Acting with reasonable care and skill.
  • Ensuring that Claremont is accountable as a charity.

We are seeking to appoint two or three trustees, and also a Chair of the Board. We are seeking board members are passionate about our mission, vision and values; who have governance experience within charities; and who can think strategically as part of a team.

Between them, our Board of Trustees has knowledge, expertise and skills that cover a range of areas. Alongside a broad competence in charity governance, it would be desirable if candidates had skills that could help us fill the following gaps:

  • Fundraising
  • Psychotherapy (with understanding of an existentialist approach if possible)
  • Buildings maintenance and retrofit
  • Maximising income from office lettings and halls/room hire
  • Public donations and legacies
  • Dementia risk reduction and brain health
  • Environmental sustainability and climate readiness

Strong candidates will have experience and competence in one or several of these areas, as well as having a certain “Claremontiness” – aspirational and personal qualities which embody a genuine relational approach to life.

Time commitment (Trustee roles):  Quarterly Board meetings (held in the evenings), plus emails and optional committee work.

Time commitment (Chair role): In addition to the Trustee duties above, a fortnightly meeting with the CEO during office hours, plus ad hoc phone calls and emails (including during office hours).

Claremont is a community where people from all backgrounds are loved and wanted, and which is diverse in terms of characteristics like race and ethnicity, gender, disability and socioeconomic status. We warmly welcome applications from people coming from all walks of life, particularly those from backgrounds that have been historically underrepresented on charity boards.

If you’d like to have an informal chat about these positions, please email .
