AECOM's Chesterfield office has an immediate requirement for a Civil Design Engineer to undertake technical designs and project management and drive forward various civil infrastructure related commercial and residential development projects and to help develop the Company’s business.

The Business Unit is highly multi-disciplinary comprising civil & highway, structural, mechanical, and electrical/process engineers, architects, project managers and surveyors. Our market sectors range from industrial development and logistics, airports, infrastructure development/regeneration and Government Agency/Local Authority projects.

Job responsibilities:
  • Reporting to the Principal / Associate Director, this role will provide support to the Team and work towards ensuring all projects are delivered to programme quality and budget.
  • You will also need to develop internal team relationships and to ensure you provide support to train staff and to develop their individual skills and to encourage their personal development to promote succession planning.
  • Key to this role is the ability to provide technical support to junior team members and have a client focused service which results in on-going satisfaction and repeat business.

Requirements:
  • To be commercially aware and able to assist a team of engineers and technicians and successfully deliver projects to time, budget and quality.
  • To provide wide ranging highways, drainage and associated infrastructure design to deliver multi-disciplinary developments.
  • Have detailed knowledge of drainage design including piped systems, SuDS based systems familiar with storage design and computer programmes such as InfoDrainage.
  • Have experience in the preparation of Contract Drawings and Specifications and the negotiation of Section 38, 278, 104 and 106 Agreements.
  • To be able to produce and have knowledge in the design of highways, access roads and infrastructure of projects including the design of road geometry, earthworks, pavements, drainage and underground services.
  • Assist the coaching and support of junior staff members to enable their development.

Preferred Qualification:
  • Significant experience in UK development related infrastructure engineering; likely to be from a public/private/consultancy background.
  • Civil Engineering degree or equivalent. Chartered Civil Engineer or working towards Chartered status (MICE).

The Role

We’re looking for a motivated engineer with around five or more years’ experience in civil design, ideally gained in a consultancy environment. You’ll take ownership of design packages, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and deliver practical, buildable solutions from early feasibility through to detailed design and delivery.

You’ll also play an important part in mentoring junior engineers and supporting team development.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and produce designs for highways, drainage, utilities and SUDS elements.
  • Prepare and review calculations, drawings and technical reports .
  • Use design tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D or PDS , and Flow or MicroDrainage .
  • Interpret topographical surveys and site investigation data .
  • Liaise with clients, contractors and local authorities to ensure smooth project delivery.
  • Contribute to fee proposals, project planning and budgeting .
  • Ensure compliance with relevant UK legislation including the Highways Act , Water Industry Act , and associated codes and standards.


About You

  • Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience in roads and drainage design within the UK.
  • Strong technical understanding and attention to detail.
  • Confident communicator able to work effectively across disciplines and represent the company externally.
  • Chartered or working towards Chartership (ICE) preferred.

Role Overview:

They are looking for a highly motivated individual with a background in Civil Engineering to join our Design & Product Development team.


As Design Engineer - Civil you will be reporting to Head of Design & Product Development. You will be responsible for owning and developing our next generation data centre campus designs and surrounding infrastructure. You will work with utility providers, Architects, internal and external design teams and supply chain across as technical subject matter expert.


The ideal candidate will have experience working as a senior engineer on major infrastructure projects, a background in contracting, consultancy or product technical development within Data Centre or Critical Infrastructure sectors, as well as a passion for seeing their concepts take shape during construction, all while working as part of a cohesive team.


You will partner with our local development and operations teams across all our existing facilities, including Finland, Iceland, London in this global role based in the London Head Office.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design: Own our Civil infrastructure product from Strategic Brief through to handover to operations.
  • Vendor management: Foster relationships and drive external partner teams forward in early stages of data centre development, including technical feasibility, due diligence, permitting design.
  • Technical Feasibility: Market research for new and emerging data centre and energy generation technologies, development of technical whitepapers to support the Product Development Roadmap.
  • Product Management: Take ownership of key product initiatives within Verne from concept to launch.


Key Requirements:

  • Degree in Engineering or Physical Science or similar field
  • 5 years’ experience as an individual contributor involved in the design or delivery of infrastructure projects, as a Civil Engineer.
  • Hands-on experience in Revit / Civil 3D
  • Professionally accredited, or ability to demonstrate on the path towards.
  • Track record of leading initiatives or projects to successful outcomes.
  • Interest in the built environment, technology and infrastructure
  • Travel Flexibility: Willingness to travel regularly between UK, Finland, and Iceland as part of the role.
