Project Design Engineer - Permanent Role
Desborough | 45,000 - 50,000
Working Hours | Mon-Thu 8:30-17:00, Fri 9:30-17:00
Our client, an established manufacturing company are looking for two experienced Project Design Engineers to add to their team. Reporting to the Head of Projects you will be responsible for the engineering and technical disciplines required to complete projects. The successful candidate will have worked as a Project Design Engineer for an extensive period of time ( 8 to 10 years ideally) and will be well versed in the world of manufacturing.
The Role
The Project Design Engineer will see through each project from the design stage to project completion covering the following areas.
- Understanding the concept of customers machinery requirements to produce technical drawings in both 2D and 3D
- Undertake other drawing work for the engineering department.
- To use Solidworks and AutoCAD as the main design platforms
- Full engineering integration of the business's in-house products such as conveyors, structures and ancillary products.
- To ensure design, quality, costings and time-scales are considered and adhered to throughout the project.
- To work closely with other company departments including manufacturing, engineering and sales to ensure that designed products meet the requirements of the business and customers.
- Be hands on proactive and own the development of the project from the initial design concept stage right through to manufacturing, testing and commissioning
- Liaise with customers to ensure standards match project expectations.
- To attend site as and when necessary to ensure fluidity of a project.
- Create and release the BOM's using the company MRP System.
- Produce and maintain technical documents for both the Engineering and Sales Departments.
- Define product technical specifications for both internal design standards and mandatory industry standards.
- Work on continuous improvements of existing products and processes.
The Person
To be considered for this role you will be an experienced Project Design Engineer who has worked with designing capital or special purpose machinery, is familiar with sheet metal structural & fabrication design and will have the following
- HNC or equivalent in a mechanical / manufacturing engineering subject
- Fully proficient in AutoCAD and Solidworks (GA, Design and Detailing)
- Experience in sheet metal and fabricated product design (essential)
- Basic knowledge of Electrical Engineering
- Have excellent communication, organisational and problem solving skills
- Be creative and innovate with the desire to improve continuously
- Be confident in decision making
- Be used to managing costs and BOM's
- Have knowledge of ERP / MRP systems.

Main tasks and responsibilities
- Implement on-board telematics systems for our client's vehicles manufactured in Europe for global markets.
- Develop and deliver the IVC (In Vehicle Connectivity) ECU for specific vehicle programs
- Manage Tier 1 suppliers to deliver products to Quality, Cost & Timing targets.
- Generate and release of TCU configuration data
- Coordinate supplier validation to our client's design standards ahead of software release
- Collaborate with internal test departments to confirm function and performance of vehicle connected services
- Create and maintain cross carline development plans
- Collaborate with Telematics Service Providers, ensuring their development schedules are aligned to our client's milestones.
- Perform design reviews at key milestones
- Perform hands on investigation and analysis on both test bench and vehicle
Qualifications, skills, training requirements
- Degree qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline
- Manufacturing BOM management experience (advantageous)
- Office 365 tools (including Excel to intermediate/advanced level)
- Have fluent written and verbal English language capability.
- Be able to demonstrate and have practical experience in problem solving tools and techniques, and a strong mathematical understanding.
Required
- Experience in automotive ECU development
- Base level of system knowledge for vehicle connectivity.
- Understanding of mobile network infrastructure and data transfer
- Applicants with experience in ECU development other than telematics may be considered
Desirable
- Knowledge of 4G/5G technologies
- Knowledge of non-European mobile networks
- Knowledge of MQTT
- Knowledge of End to End System architecture understanding with Cloud Infrastructure
- Understanding of European eCall regulation
- Experience with analysis tools to check ECU function and performance such as CANalyser, DLT Viewer, Wireshark, UDS diagnostic tool etc
