Position Summary
Nestlé Dalston Factory in Cumbria is the European Centre for cappuccino and creamers producing a range of beverage products. These are produced through a highly automated PLC controlled process plant and automated filling and packing lines. Dalston is continually developing and expanding leading brands such as Nescafé, Aero Hot Chocolate and Coffeemate.
The factory is moving forward with continuous improvement principles and actively developing Lean/TPM processes, so it's an exciting time to be involved.

As an Instrumentation Engineer at Nestle Dalston, you will be responsible for ensuring reliability and repeatability of Instrumentation devices and measurement systems through execution of calibrations, maintenance and improvement initiatives across the site.
A day in the life of an Instrumentation Engineer
As an Instrumentation Engineer at Dalston you will…
- Ensure optimal performance and reliability of service Instrumentation and measurement systems across the site whilst driving improvements.
- Maintain and accurately track instruments through their lifecycle, from procurement, installation and commissioning through to repair, decommissioning and disposal.
- Play an integral role in a multi-functional team, responding to high-pressure breakdown scenarios, acting swiftly and safely to minimise downtime and maximise performance of assets.
- Provide Engineering support and guidance on CAPEX projects in producing User Requirement Specifications and supporting the delivery of suitable equipment to site standards.
- Continuously review and develop Instrumentation related practices, procedures and technical documentation.
- Ensure compliance through maintaining completeness of data within the instrument database.
- Be responsible for autonomous planning and execution of calibrations, working closely with Maintenance Planners to guarantee meticulous planning and timely execution in accordance with metrology standards.
- Work with world-leading calibration equipment and technology to deliver highly accurate, reliable and thoroughly documented calibration results.
- Maintain precise records using advanced digital calibration management software which integrates seamlessly with the calibrators and reference equipment.

The successful candidate will be someone with a keen eye for detail and diligence in their everyday activities. They will have strong hands-on capability with plant and process equipment and should be able to demonstrate a high level of competency in the field of Instrumentation. They will work with initiative and a pro-active, productive mindset, have a continuous improvement ethos and a drive for delivering high quality results.
Other requirements for the suitable candidate. Experiences below are desirable unless otherwise stated:
- Educated to NVQ level 3 or equivalent in Instrumentation, Electronic, Electrical or other relevant discipline. – Essential
- Have previous experience in an Instrumentation position. – Essential
- Knowledge or experience in the field of Automation and control would be advantageous.
- Must be able to read and understand Engineering drawings and documentation.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate a sense of urgency whilst never compromising on safety or quality.
- Experience of working in hazardous areas would be beneficial.

Job Title: Electrical Instrumentation Engineer
Location: Barrow-in-Furness. On-site
Salary: Negotiable, depending on experience
What you’ll be doing:
- Liaising with internal customers as required to foster collaborative working relationships and ensure requirements are adequately articulated, understood and met
- Installation of a variety of different instrumentation around site that captures our customer’s needs
- Fault finding and repairing of legacy equipment
- Work with BAE Systems’ supply chain department and equipment suppliers to deliver equipment that meets customer requirements
- Where appropriate support factory acceptance trial attendance and submarine system trials and analyse trial results when required
- Undertake peer reviews or checking/verification tasks as directed
- Provide support to the Certificate of Design activities
- Support the production of evidence in support of qualification, legislative requirements and safety justifications and provide specialist support for associated activities
Your skills and experiences:
Essential:
- Strong knowledge of Electrical and Electronic Principles
- Proficient in trouble shooting and repairing Complex instrumentation Systems
- Ability to read and Interpret technical/schematic drawings
- Demonstrable experience of defining and conducting test procedures.
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
Desirable:
- EngTech (or be able to satisfy requirements for EngTech)
