We're looking for a Customs Clearance Day Clerk to join our Operations team in Dover, working within our Customs Insights Department. Reporting to the Branch Manager, this full-time role plays a key part in delivering smooth and accurate customs clearance processes.
Working Hours: Mon - Fri 09:00 to 17:30 (Compulsory overtime may be required).
Key Responsibilities:
- Completing import customs declarations.
- Completing export customs declarations.
- Assisting the customs clerks with completion of customs paperwork as required.
- Assisting with other operational duties within the office at Managers discretion.
What We’re Looking For:
- Minimum 2 years experience
- Full knowledge of customs procedures and principles
- Proficient with customs clearance software
- Good understanding of Excel spreadsheets
- IT Literate
- Conscientious and Attention to detail
- Must be able to meet deadlines
- Team player with good communication skills
- Ability to identify and report issues effectively
- Communicate politely and efficiently with clients and internal staff

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Accurately enter data provided by our customers into Descartes system
Sense check data provided by our customers against required source and advise on potential errors.
Create Import/Export declarations through CDS
Create Transit declarations through NCTS (New Computerised Transit System)
Create ENS Declarations
Deal with any queries effectively and efficiently
Direct liaison with Customs authorities such as HMRC & other agencies
Help maintain the team mailbox
Maintain/develop good working relationships with existing and new customers
Establish an effective collaborative relationship with Operational team and maintain communication with customers on all customs issues

Requirements
Experience of working in a customs brokerage environment.
Knowledge of the HMRC Tariff for a diverse range of product types.
Extremely organized with a high level of attention to detail.
Strong interpersonal and excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
Ability to work with line manager on HMRC ad hoc requirements, procedures, audits etc.
Very good IT knowledge including Microsoft Office
Flexibility being on call
You must have Customs Clearance experience including familiarisation with customs processes, customs systems (CDS) and HMRC regimes preferred.
You must have experience of freight forwarding in road.
Have a good understanding of the law, legal codes, government regulations, political processes, and agency rules

GENERAL SUMMARY
The Trade Compliance Specialist will report directly to the Global Trade Compliance Manager and will perform a variety of duties necessary to support the company’s global trade compliance program. The position functions as a professional expert authority with regard to export and import laws and regulations and is responsible for ensuring that operations are carried out in compliance with the relevant laws and regulations. Responsibilities also include training business personnel and executing operational audits to validate compliance with governing trade laws, internal policies and procedures.
The successful candidate will also contribute to developing and maintaining a sustained and long-term continuous improvement culture and an efficient organization that consistently produces improved results while motivating and retaining its employees with high performance standards. The Trade Compliance Specialist will work closely with operational and commercial business teams to advise them of applicability of and changes in relevant export/import laws and regulations.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide all round global export/import compliance advice to the business.
- Develop, review, and update company export and import compliance policies, manuals and operating procedures.
- Conduct periodic training of company personnel with regard to export and import laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Assist the Global Trade Compliance Manager to develop and implement auditing methodology and conduct periodic audits to test company compliance with export and import regulations and Company procedures.
- Identify and classify Export (ECCN) and Import (HTS, HS) classifications for the company’s products.
- Ensure compliance with UK, U.S. and other applicable Export Control regulations, as well as conformance with internal corporate policies and procedures.
- Export controls and license determination for all exports and re-exports of tangible and intangible goods.
- UK Export Licensing: Submission and management of export license applications to the UK Department for International Trade Export Control Joint Unit via SPIRE.
- Monitor and maintain trade compliance data elements in the company’s systems.
- Support periodic internal assessments on the trade compliance program. Identify risk areas and recommend improvements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Proven track record of meeting commitments with the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
- Expertise with U.S., European and UK export and import regulations, including EAR, OFAC, ITAR and CBP.
- Ability to gain knowledge and understanding of other non-US/Europe/UK trade regulations.
- Working knowledge of laws and regulations impacting the company.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects.
- Pro-active approach to work and an excellent team player with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum five years’ trade compliance experience
- Thorough knowledge of UK, EU, and US import/export regulations, including ITAR, EAR, OFAC, HMRC, Export Control Joint Unit, and Department of International Trade
- Must demonstrate excellent knowledge on Classification (ECCN and HTS)
- Must demonstrate an extensive understanding and application of export classification and licensing principles, practices, and concepts
LOCATION
Glasgow, Scotland (Aberdeen will be considered).
