**Senior Data Engineer**
**Location:** Farnborough, with flexibility to work from home dependent on business demands (we can consider applicants closer to our other Leidos Offices also)
**The Role:**
We are looking for anexperienced **Data Engineer** to join us on a permanent basis.We need talented individuals to apply their software development and data engineering skills for solving problems with data across a number of critical UK sectors.

**What will I be doing?**
You will work closely with the Data Architect, Senior Data Engineers and fellow Data Engineers to form an integral part of the team. Our team comprises of a blend of seasoned experts and intermediate level engineers. **What will I be doing?**
+ Working in a team of peer Data Engineers in an Agile manner
+ Build, Maintain and Operate Data environments in the cloud
+ Debug and resolve data processing and analytics issues
+ Being proactive in evaluating and developing tools and technologies in improving the data platforms
+ Supporting the development of data integration and data processing processes
+ Sharing and collaborating with engineering, testing and dev-ops teams
+ Supporting the creation of project plans, identification of risks, and generation of risk mitigation plans
+ Supporting the migration of test and sensitive production data
+ Supporting the operational system in a 3rd Tier support capacity
**What does Leidos need from me?**
+ Postgres Database administration experience
+ Expertise in SQL programming with experience on PostgreSQL (PL-SQL a plus)
+ Experience in resolving SQL performance issues
+ SQL programming (PL-SQL a plus)
+ Experience with AWS Database offerings such as RDS, Aurora
+ Leading a team of Data engineers in an Agile / Scrum environment
+ Good communication skills
+ Experience estimating task effort and identifying dependencies
The following would be advantageous:
+ AWS Aurora Database or similar RDS managed database
+ Large scale data migration experience
+ Familiarity with DB2
+ Familiarity with Oracle
+ Scripting language experience (e.g. Python)

Senior Data Engineer

Location: RG7 4PR , located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking .

Package: 50,060 - 70,000 (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight.

In this role you will be accountable for the development of digital twin platform products in line with relevant company policies, processes or external regulations, standards, codes of practice, and best practice. You will lead on analysis and programming support to the business in line with the business plan to protect, develop, and deliver the AWE mission.

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be responsible for end-to-end execution of high-stakes projects, collaborating in small teams and taking ownership of project outcomes from inception to delivery. From a technical perspective:

Essential

  • Expertise with SQL, especially Databricks SQL;

Desirable

  • Expertise in Python, DAX and other data languages used within Azure, Databricks, Power BI;
  • Expertise in legacy data solutions/systems (e.g. SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS);
  • Ability to train users in data solutions/tooling (e.g. Databricks).

What is also important to us is that you have experience of working in a regulated finance environment in a similar capacity with financial modelling experience and experience of delivery under Agile methodology. You will need to be highly numerate, analytical and business value orientated with experience in documentation and specification writing. You will have strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and possess strong stakeholder management skills. You will have previous experience in managing a small team and mentoring junior engineers to enable data capability across business teams. You’ll be a natural problem solver with a passion for delivering solutions, and a proactive approach in using your initiative.

A relevant Microsoft or cloud-based certification is important, and it would be advantageous if you have and ITIL foundation qualification and/or degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Data Science or similar.

  • Cloud: Optimise cloud-based data solutions, storage and processing systems, with hands-on experience in AWS and on-prem services .
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the customers, PMO, and business stakeholders to deliver high-impact, cost-effective solutions.
  • First Major Engagement : You will contribute to one of the UK Government's largest and most ambitious digital data transformation initiatives across England and Wales. You will empower the engineering team to deliver innovative solutions while fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment. As a mentor, you will support Data Engineers and Data Analysts in overcoming technical challenges and ensuring timely, high-quality delivery.


About You

We are looking for a passionate, technically strong leader who can inspire and elevate those around them. You will bring:

  • Depth of Expertise: Extensive experience in designing, implementing, and optimizing data solutions, supported by a history of successfully managing technical teams and delivery of data projects.
  • Exceptional coding skills.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or similar (applied to Data or with a Data Specialisation).
  • Extensive experience in Data Engineering and Data Analytics.
  • Expert knowledge in data technologies and data transformation solutions and tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good understanding of Quality and Information Security principles.
  • Effective communication, ability to explain technical concepts to a range of audiences.
  • Able to provide coaching and training to less experienced members of the team.
  • Essential skills:
    • Programming Languages such as Spark, Java, Python, PySpark, Scala or similar (minimum of 2)
    • Extensive Data Engineering and Data Analytics hands-on experience
    • Significant AWS hands-on experience
    • Technical Delivery Manager skills
    • Geospatial Data experience (including QGIS)
    • FME
    • Advanced Database and SQL skills
    • Certifications : AWS or FME certifications are a real plus.
    • Experience with ETL tools such as AWS Glue, Azure Data Factory, Databricks or similar is a bonus.

A successful Data Engineer should have:

  • Understanding of dimensional modelling and data warehousing principles.

  • Cable route planning knowledge and the ability to problem solve
  • li>Installation, Termination and Testing of cables, Category 6 & 6a / Fibre
  • De-Patching/Patching Data cabinets
  • Installation of Wireless Access Points in various settings (Internal and External)
