Job Title : Electrical and Data Infrastructure Engineer

Department Estates and Facilities Directorate

Projects and Infrastructure

Grade: Grade 7

Salary range:   £38,784 - £46,049

Working arrangements: Full time (nominal 35 hours)

Permanent

Hybrid working(minimum of two days per week onsite, depending on business need, following the initial induction/ training period, which will be full time onsite)

The Role and Department

As an Electrical and Data Infrastructure Engineer, you will play a vital role in delivering a professional, customer-focused electrical engineering and data infrastructure service that supports the University's strategic and operational needs. Your expertise will ensure the development and continuous improvement of a reliable, efficient, and future-ready electrical infrastructure across the campus. Working closely with Computing and Information Services (CIS), stakeholders and contractors, you will oversee the planning and execution of electrical and data installations, upgrades, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance.

This role offers a unique opportunity to influence and shape the University's infrastructure through the development of design processes, technical specifications, and service standards. You will manage a diverse portfolio of projects from inception to completion, contribute to the University's Building Engineering Services Design Guidelines, and act as a key point of contact for resolving complex technical issues. Your responsibilities will also include managing contractor frameworks, monitoring performance, and ensuring all work aligns with the University's sustainability goals and safety regulations. As a recognised professional in your field, you will collaborate across departments, lead working groups, and provide expert advice to support the University's mission of delivering a world-class learning and research environment.

The Estates and Facilities Directorate provides essential services to Durham University and is responsible for managing, maintaining and developing the infrastructure and building fabric of the various campuses.

• Deploy and troubleshoot Flexera EKS and AKS agents across AWS and Azure cloud environments.
• Utilise infrastructure-as-code principles with Terraform and PowerShell to automate agent deployment and manage core infrastructure.
• Collaborate with internal business units to navigate legacy and custom-built environments, ensuring successful agent deployment despite technical inconsistencies.
• Solve complex networking challenges , including DNS entries, static routes, and security configurations to ensure agent-to-server communication.
• UK security clearance is required.

• Extensive experience with AWS, Azure, Windows, and Linux operating systems (specifically Red Hat and Bottle Rocket).
• A proven track record of being an effective, hands-on practitioner and problem-solver.
• The ability to contribute to high-level architectural planning for a comprehensive IT estate view, including platforms like IBM Skytap and high-volume containerised environments.
• You must have UK Security Clearance

Cloud Infrastructure Engineer – Stoke on Trent (AWS, Azure, GCP)

Infrastructure Cloud Engineer with 2-3 years’ experience with Cloud platforms, our client is flexible around AWS, Azure, or GCP.  You will have Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Terraform, CloudFormation, or ARM templates. This would suit an experienced engineer with Linux/Unix or Windows server administration in a cloud or virtualised environment with basic networking (VPCs, subnets, routing, firewalls, VPNs) in a cloud context. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps is desired. My client would be looking for someone with scripting langs Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation. Understanding monitoring tools, logging tools such as CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Stackdriver or similar.

This is to join a highly talented growing team in Stoke on Trent, supporting exciting projects and delivering secure, scalable, and cost-effective solutions to end clients.

You’ll help design, implement, and maintain cloud infrastructure across public and hybrid environments, using Infrastructure-as-Code tools.
