**Database Administrator (DBA)**
Leidos is seeking an experienced Database
(DBA) to be part of a team supporting and maintaining an IT service management tool (ServiceNow) for a large organisation. This role requires hands-on experience with database administration, optimization, and disaster recovery planning. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring database stability, security, and performance, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance data integrity and system efficiency. This role requires a daily in-office presence.

**Key Responsibilities:**
+ Database Administration & Maintenance: Provide technical support for MariaDB (MySQL) databases, ensuring optimal performance and availability.
+ Backup & Disaster Recovery: Implement regular database backups to allow for efficient data recovery in the event of system failures.
+ Monitoring & Performance Optimization: Track system performance and identify bottlenecks affecting database efficiency and data integrity.
+ Incident & Problem Management: Troubleshoot database-related incidents and implement proactive solutions to minimize downtime.
+ Capacity Planning: Monitor and forecast database storage and performance needs, ensuring scalability.
+ Upgrades & Patch Management: Plan and execute major database upgrades and periodic patching to maintain system stability.
+ Database Logging & Monitoring: Configure and manage database logs for integration into a SIEM (Security information and event management) solution for monitoring and security compliance.
+ High Availability & Failover Management: Monitor, maintain and orchestrate manual failover and failback procedures to maintain uptime.
+ Automation & Scripting: Develop scripts using SQL, Bash, or Python to automate database maintenance and monitoring tasks.
+ Documentation & Knowledge Sharing: Maintain database build and upgrade documentation, ensuring accuracy and accessibility for the team.
+ Testing & Validation Support: Assist testing teams with execution of test scripts for database validation and performance assessment.
**You will have:**
+ Proven experience as a Database Administrator (DBA)
+ Expertise in MariaDB or other relational databases (MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server).
+ Experience with backup and disaster recovery strategies for databases.
+ Knowledge of database tuning, indexing, and query optimization.
+ Understanding of networking protocols relevant to databases (TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing).
+ Familiarity with IT Service Management (ITSM) tools, preferably ServiceNow.
+ Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
+ Knowledge of ITIL/ITSM principles and best practices.
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
**Desirable Skills:**
+ Familiarity with security frameworks such as CIS benchmarks or ISO 27001.
+ Hands-on experience with high availability clustering and replication.
+ Familiarity with virtualization technologies.
+ Experience with automated patch management in database environments.
+ ServiceNow environment experience is desirable.
+ Experience of transitioning systems to service.

Marlowe Fire & Security’s Contracts & Database Administrators

Play an essential role in providing an effective and professional service to all our Marlowe Fire & Security Customers, acting as a single point of contact for New Contract Sales. Providing excellent Customer Service as an administrative support for both internal & external customers. The role requires a proactive approach and excellent personal interaction to support the Administration Supervisor to ensure process adherence for new contract sales & mobilisation across multiple customer requirements in line with our Customer Charter.

  • Establish and implement the sales process for new contracts, providing mobilisation support to the administration team as directed by the Administration Supervisor.
  • Collaborate closely with National Account Managers to align with customer expectations and ensure internal SLAs and the monthly PPM scheduling deadline (15th of each month) are consistently met for new contracts.
  • Maintain clear and accurate customer records in Cash and the customer portal, clearly outlining next steps and associated timelines.
  • Take a proactive approach to managing customer workloads, ensuring timely and efficient delivery of services.
  • Review, prioritise, and respond to customer enquiries promptly and professionally.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to facilitate timely and effective responses to customer needs, ensuring all work is completed in line with agreed SLAs.
  • Maintain clear, professional communication with both internal stakeholders and external customers.
  • Validate mobilisation upload sheets and communicate key information to the Administration Supervisor, Administration Manager, Operations Manager, and Customer Service Manager to support successful onboarding and customer satisfaction.
  • Liaise with internal customer service teams to address enquiries and provide accurate information to clients.
  • Analyse customer requests and collaborate with internal teams to share best practices and drive service improvements.
  • Identify and report any process inefficiencies or risks to the Administration Supervisor, contributing to continuous improvement and risk mitigation.

About the role

We’re hiring a pragmatic Senior Database Administrator to own the health, performance and reliability of our fleet of ~50 Aurora MySQL clusters . You’ll work closely with engineering to keep systems running smoothly — ensuring backups and alarms are configured, capacity is right-sized, and maintenance windows and failover procedures are tested. Day-to-day you’ll profile and optimise slow queries, review and add indexes, rewrite problematic SQL, and drive performance tuning and schema-change best practices. You’ll also automate routine checks, maintain runbooks for incidents and recovery, and partner with teams to plan migrations, capacity growth and long-term improvements.

About you

Responsibilities  

  • Monitor cluster health and alerts (CloudWatch / Performance Insights / slow-query), investigate anomalies and act on incidents.

  • Diagnose and optimise slow queries and problematic transactions: use EXPLAIN, rewrite queries, and add/remove indexes as needed.

  • Ensure backups, snapshots and PITR are configured and tested; maintain and exercise recovery/runbook procedures.

  • Perform capacity planning, sizing and maintenance (patches, minor version upgrades, failover drills) to keep performance and availability targets.

  • Automate routine checks and reports (index coverage, long-running queries, replica lag, space usage) and produce actionable recommendations for engineering teams.

Essential Skills

  • Strong practical experience with MySQL / Aurora MySQL administration at production scale (schema design, replication, failover).

  • Proven ability to profile and tune queries and indexes (EXPLAIN, slow-query analysis, query rewriting).

  • Solid knowledge of backup & recovery strategies for Aurora (snapshots, continuous backups/PITR) and tested restore experience.

  • Experience with monitoring and alerting for databases (CloudWatch, Performance Insights, slow-query logs) and acting on alarms.

  • Comfortable scripting/automation (Bash, Python, or similar) to build health checks, runbooks and operational tooling; good Linux fundamentals.

Desirable Skills

  • Familiarity with MySQL tooling such as pt-query-digest / Percona Toolkit, ProxySQL, or similar performance/management tools.

  • AWS experience or certification (Aurora/RDS internals, KMS for encryption, IAM, multi-AZ/Global DB setups).
