The Opportunity

Having been awarded several new contracts this leading Heat Network Consultancy is recruiting for an experienced Process Design Engineer. You will be responsible for ensuring that the project deliverables you work on meet the client requirements and are delivered on time and budget across a wide range of design activities. The Building Design team works on a mix of commercial projects, universities, schools, various other public sector buildings as well as residential projects.

The Position

Your role will consist primarily of design development working within the Engineering Consultancy Team.

• To develop tender issue design documentation it is expected that you would be working with building owners to obtain necessary existing building information;
li>Undertaking detailed site surveys of existing systems; advising building owners on additional surveys and specialist input;
• Working with specialist consultants to develop appropriate specifications 
li>Developing basis of design documents and ensuring building owner sign off; producing space heating and hot water sizing calculations; sizing and selecting heat emitters and valves; producing building retrofit schematics and layouts; sizing and selecting plant room heating and hot water equipment; producing plant room schematics and layouts;
• Producing specification documents, including technical specifications, schedules, description of operations and controls philosophy, pre-commissioning and water quality specifications, CDM design risk assessments;
• Develop a design documentation that allows the project to be manufactured and constructed you will be working to conduct on-site reviews of all relevant drawings and specifications,
• Attend regular design team meetings with project stakeholders to discuss design progress and any project risks.

The Person

• Degree qualified in an engineering discipline, such as Mechanical, Chemical or Process engineering.
li>A minimum of 2 years of experience within a Consulting Engineering role within the petrochem, Oil & Gas industry.
• Ideally a good Good knowledge of design principles, construction, commissioning and operations
li>Ability to produce the calculations, deliverables and specifications across  li>Proficiency across Microsoft Office packages

Desirable

• An ability to develop drawings on AutoCAD or another suitable software package.
• Direct experience of designing and delivering retrofit works within a range of existing building types
• Knowledge of relevant industry documentation such as CIBSE CP1.
• Your core activities will be working within the Building Design team, which conducts retrofit design activities on existing building level communal heating systems or heat networks, typically taking designs from Concept Design Stage (RIBA2) through to Technical Design Stage (RIBA4).

As part of our Global Project Development Team, you will design and optimize process solutions for major capital projects – from feasibility through to project handover. Key Responsibilities

• Develop PFDs, P&IDs, and mass/energy balances for feasibility studies.
• Conduct process simulations and preliminary sizing of key equipment.
• Assess technology options based on performance, scalability, CAPEX/OPEX, and integration needs.
• Prepare process design packages and documentation to support FID.
• Collaborate with environmental, permitting, and engineering teams.
• Participate in HAZOP, risk assessments, and early safety reviews.
• Coordinate with vendors, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
• Provide process input for equipment specifications and procurement.

• Degree in Chemical/Process Engineering (Master’s preferred).
• 8+ years’ process design experience in capital projects or industrial plants.
• Experience in bulk materials processing and handling including separation, grinding, drying, e.g. mineral processing plants design
• Proficient in Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or similar tools.
• Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat/mass transfer.
• Experience with PFDs, P&IDs, and process datasheets.
• Familiar with HAZOP, risk analysis, and process safety principles.
• Problem-solving mindset, strong communication, and cross-functional teamwork skills.
• Chartered or working toward professional accreditation is a plus.

What Are We Looking For?

Our Asset Management & Technical Services business platform is expanding their in-house design team and are currently looking for a Senior Process Design Engineer to them on a permanent basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing process design input, formulating and developing designs for clients, and providing direction and technical guidance to the team.

Some of Your Key Duties Include:

• Initial project scoping visit and preparation of project scope reports.
li>Process calculations and process unit sizing.
• Preparation of P&IDs.
• Ensure that project design checking, validation and approval procedures are followed including any Client technical governance requirements
• Preparation of Process Control Philosophies. 
li>Consider all project design development activities including multi-disciplinary interface reviews, ensuring compliance with Client specifications and current regulatory standards
• Leading design meetings, including but not limited to HAZOPs.
• Act as a Design Lead for specific projects.
• Specifying temporary treatment requirements to ensure no consent breaches occur during construction activities.
• Respond to engineering queries raised during the project construction stage.

What Do You Need?

The ideal candidate will possess strong technical knowledge both in the design and operation of water and wastewater projects (or similar). Ideally you will be able to demonstrate prior experience of problem-solving abilities to meet client specific requirements.

• Demonstrable experience in process engineering or a similar industry environment.
• Process design engineering experience within municipal water/wastewater is highly desirable.
• Ability to work alone or supervise a team.
• Experience of working at all design stages, from optioneering/FEED through to construction support and As-Built is highly desirable.
• Experience of plant commissioning and/or plant operation is preferrable.
• Some knowledge of strategic planning and risk management processes.
• Possess the ability to work on multiple projects consecutively.
