Our aim is to treat those in our care with dignity, decency and respect, delivering a safe and healthy establishment which stands up to public scrutiny. We operate in a high risk, high profile and heavily regulated environment engaging with numerous stakeholders including the Home Office and Medical Service delivery partners. No specific role experience or qualifications are required to be a DCO as full training and supported development are given. Experience of dealing sensitively with a wide variety of people who may be vulnerable, anxious, confused or volatile would be an advantage.
You'll begin your Care & Custody career completing a 7-week classroom-based initial training course (ITC), continuing your development over the next 12 months with on-the-job mentoring.

What we offer
Training that sets you up for success: You'll complete a comprehensive 7-week training programme (fully paid) before you start. This covers everything from conflict resolution to cultural awareness, giving you the confidence and skills to handle whatever comes your way.
Room to grow: This role can be a stepping stone to leadership positions or specialist roles within Serco. We're invested in helping our people develop their careers long-term.
Benefits worth having:

- Pension contributions matched up to 6%
- Free parking on site
- Paid breaks during night shifts
- Subsidised meals (plus one free meal per day)
- Full uniform provided
- Employee discounts through Serco Benefits and Blue Light Card

You don't need previous experience in this field, but you do need:
- Strong communication skills and emotional intelligence
- The ability to stay calm under pressure
- Respect for people from all backgrounds and cultures
- Physical and mental resilience
- A genuine desire to help people in difficult circumstances
Experience working with vulnerable groups or in multicultural environments would be valuable but isn't essential.
Our application process
Step 1: Complete your online application
Step 2: Virtual interview (1 hour via Microsoft Teams) if shortlisted
Step 3: Assessment day including group exercises, fitness test and site tour

About the Role:
As a PCO at our court, you’ll work as part of a team to provide safe and secure escorting and custody services to detainees, focusing on maintaining their physical and mental wellbeing. During court proceedings, you’ll be responsible for every aspect of detainee management until it’s time for them to return to custody or be released.
Key duties include:
- Escorting defendants to and from courtrooms, cells, and other areas within the court, including accompanying them to the toilet to ensure security and safety. This may involve being handcuffed to the detainee.
- Monitoring and supervising detainees while they are in the docks during court sessions, ensuring they remain secure and do not pose a risk to themselves or others.
- Being privy to sensitive and confidential information discussed during court proceedings, including testimonies, legal arguments etc. Maintaining discretion and confidentiality is paramount.

- Working closely with other court staff, law enforcement, and legal professionals to ensure smooth and secure court operations.
What you need to do the job!

Ideally, you’ll have a current valid driver's license, be reasonably fit and have good written and verbal communications skills, using those skills to manage and control all situations. This role requires a high level of responsibility, vigilance, and the ability to handle challenging situations with professionalism and care. You will be an integral part of the judicial process, ensuring that justice is administered safely and securely. Our roles would suit those who have a particular interest in criminology or psychology.
