TECHNICAL DESIGN ENGINEER
This global leader in the supply of piping components into the oil and gas, petrochem, power and water industries is looking for a Technical Design Engineer to join their successful team based in Liverpool. This company is a renowned manufacturer of forged reinforced branch fittings, flanges and other specialised forged components for piping and pressure vessel applications delivering high quality engineered products and systems in compliance with international codes, standards and contractual obligations.
Reporting into the Technical Director the role offers a competitive rate of up to 40K dependent on experience plus benefits and offers a supportive and friendly team environment.
Purpose of the Role
This role is responsible for carrying out detailed mechanical piping design calculations, analysis of client specifications & piping classes and reviewing the associated technical standards. You will prepare design calculations according to API 6A, API 17D, ASME B31.1, B31.3, B31.4, B31.8 and ASME VIII Div 1 and 2, in addition to producing CAD drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD. You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to support projects from technical concept through to deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical & piping design calculations to codes, API 6A, API 17D, ASME B31.1, B31.3, B31.4, B31.8 and ASME VIII Divisions 1 and 2.
- Produce detailed technical drawings and or 3D models:-
- Use SolidWorks for 3D modelling of components, assemblies and piping layouts.
- Use AutoCAD for 2D drawings, isometrics, piping schematics & detail drawings.
- Prepare drawing deliverables for production.
- Review technical specifications, vendor documents, material datasheets, equipment data, piping components etc. Ensure they meet project and code requirements.
- Review contracts and tenders: identify technical risks, ensure scope & requirements are clearly understood, provide input to technical sections, change control where needed.
- Assist with procurement or vendor selection where necessary: support technical queries, ensure supplier deliverables meet specifications.
- Liaise with the quality and production teams to ensure designs are aligned with production methods and machining capabilities. Support client inspections and assist with non-conformity / RCA.
- Work with the project team to ensure designs are delivered on time. Contribute to project plans, technical reviews and required change management.
- Maintain engineering documentation: calculation files, design basis, drawing revisions, material certificates and supplier documentation.
- Stay up to date with engineering best practice, relevant regulations, industry standards, safety & environmental requirements.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering (BEng or MEng or equivalent), or closely related discipline.
- Some experience (ideally 2-5+ years) working in the oil & gas / petrochemical / process piping industry, with exposure to design calculations and code compliance.
- Solid working knowledge of ASME B31.1 & ASME B31.3 codes (power piping & process piping).
- Good competence in CAD tools: SolidWorks and or AutoCAD.
- Strong analytical & numeracy skills; ability to perform detailed calculations, interpret code tables, pipe schedules etc.
- Good understanding of materials, welding, fabrication practices, inspection / testing.
- Ability to read, interpret and review technical specifications, contracts.
- Clear communication skills: able to liaise with internal teams (fabrication, quality, procurement), external vendors, clients.
- Attention to detail, methodical approach, ability to manage multiple tasks / projects concurrently.
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable:
- Experience with finite element analysis or pipe stress analysis software.
- Experience of UK / European / international code standards in addition to ASME (e.g. EN, PD, ISO).
- Familiarity with vendor and supplier management in an engineering contracting environment.
- Exposure to site work, commissioning or field engineering.
- Knowledge of health, safety, environmental regulations in oil & gas / process industries.

The Role
Our client has a great opportunity for a Technical Coordinator, based in Gravesend, Kent. The Technical Coordinator will assist the Technical Manager in managing the technical function of site-based projects on all technical, engineering and architectural aspects of the business - from commencement on site to completion and final adoptions and handovers. They will ensure that information is produced, checked and distributed on programme to the correct quality and within budget to enable effective sub-contract procurement and build programme to be met.
The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years' experience as a Technical Coordinator in High-rise / Category 2 projects and is looking to make the next step to Design/Technical Manager level.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the external design team and specialist consultants to ensure that all construction documents are provided within the agreed development programme and budget.
- Arrange, co-ordinate and manage Design-Technical Meetings with other departments in a timely and efficient manner, ensuring all relevant action points are noted and recorded.
- Review design drawings, specifications and details for compliance, buildability, VE options throughout all stages of the design process.
