Overview
We're seeking a dynamic and experienced infrastructure leader to manage and inspire a high-performing team across key highways and drainage schemes. This is a senior role-positions at Associate, Associate Director, or Director level are welcomed, with salary in the £75,000-£00,000 range, depending on experience. The successful candidate will bring at least 10 years of relevant expertise, proven leadership, and a strong technical understanding of both S278 highways and drainage projects.
Key Responsibilities
·Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team, balancing mentorship and project delivery excellence.
·Take full ownership of S278 highways design, negotiation, and approval processes-including preparation of technical documents, liaison with highways authorities, and coordination with statutory bodies.
·Oversee stormwater and surface water drainage schemes: design, hydraulic modelling, regulatory compliance, and effective collaboration with environmental and water authorities.
·Drive business development by identifying opportunities, preparing compelling proposals, managing tender submissions, and pitching to clients.
·Ensure smooth project execution: resource planning, budgeting, scheduling, risk and quality management, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
·Collaborate closely with landscape architects, structural engineers, planning consultants, and contractors to deliver integrated, multidisciplinary solutions.
·Maintain current knowledge of industry best practices (e.g., SuDS, sustainable drainage, highways design guidance), legislation changes, and emerging technologies.
·Oversee financial performance for projects-setting targets and ensuring profitability within approved margins.
·Build and maintain strong client relationships through proactive engagement and senior-level representation.
Requirements
·Experience: Minimum of 10 years in UK infrastructure consultancy or similar environment, with substantial experience in both S278 highways and drainage.
·Technical Expertise: Proven delivery of S278 schemes and drainage systems; skilled in technical submissions and liaison with statutory authorities.
·Leadership Experience: Demonstrated ability to lead teams autonomously, with coaching, performance feedback, and recruitment capabilities.
·Business Acumen: Strong understanding of commercial processes, cost control, and tender strategy. Business development experience is highly valued.
·Regulatory Knowledge: Up-to-date understanding of UK highways standards, SuDS, high-risk drainage schemes, and environmental legislation.

You will already be experienced at delivering multi-disciplinary projects under the Town and Country Planning Act and the Planning Act 2008 and can line manage and support those in our team to do this, to help meet the needs of our many clients and projects. We are also interested to hear from people that have experience in securing consents for major projects by means of Planning (Wales) Act 2015, Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act, Transport and Works Act Order or the Electricity Act.

+ Providing line management, support, and guidance to junior consultants and overseeing their work
+ Organising and managing work in a professional and responsible manner, collaborating closely across multi-disciplinary planning, land and environmental teams
+ Providing technical advice to clients and managing their consenting requirements
+ Preparing consent applications which may include applications under the Electricity Act, the Town and Country Planning Acts, Transport and Works Order, and the Planning Act 2008.
+ Project management with effective budgetary control
+ Desk studies, research, data management and report writing.
+ Leading and preparing tender submissions and where required presenting to tenderers.
+ Degree level qualification in town planning (or equivalent).
+ Member of (or eligible for) the RTPI.
