The Deputy Director for Engineering and Standards plays a key role in the Environment Agency. This role is accountable for managing and assuring the application of the engineering and asset management data and technical standards. The role is interesting and varied, the Deputy Director leads on external relationships with many of the EA’s partners and stakeholders, has a significant impact on England’s FCRM, navigation and water infrastructure, and leads the Agency’s Asset Management Technical Authority. This is an exciting role for an innovative and technical leader with a passion for utilising their expertise and working across the breadth of engineering disciplines to enhance the country's resilience through effective asset management.
Essential criteria:
- Will have held, or demonstrated the capability to hold, a senior accountable engineering role in a major complex infrastructure or allied safety critical programme.
- Strong technical experience assuring significant scale programmes of engineering construction as well as maintenance, operation and/or decommissioning.
- Excellent stakeholder (both internal and external) management skills with strong customer management and persuasion skills
- An in-depth understanding of the UK legislative and policy environment relating to asset management.
- Significant experience of managing and/or influencing governance.
- Experience of strategic oversight and contextual technical support and leadership on innovative/sensitive/ contentious multi discipline-technical and engineering principles.
- A proven track record in confidently communicating technical ideas to any audience.
- Recognition as a role model in the strategic leadership of multi-disciplinary standards, safety and the environment.
Educational Requirements:
- Degree in an appropriate engineering discipline (e.g. civil, infrastructure, mechanical, or electrical engineering (BEng/BSc or MEng), with further learning to Master’s level as required for Chartered Engineer registration under UK-SPEC.
Professional Qualification Requirements:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, (completion of accredited qualifications and professional development under UK-SPEC) or equivalent professional registration from an internationally recognised engineering body.
Desirable criteria:
- Institute of Asset Management Diploma or equivalent.
- Status of a Fellow of an Engineering Institution.
- Understanding of reservoirs, bridges and land drainage law.

Your responsibilities in this role will include:
- Ensuring consistent systems engineering best practice and innovation is applied across all projects.

Overview:
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Electrical Engineer to work for our client at their offices in Borehamwood, this exciting opportunity is reporting to the Technical & Quality Manager. The role will take responsibility for progressing the electrical and associated mechanical aspects of contracts through Engineering and Works across all project phases. The Electrical Engineer will manage the electrical component of projects for equipment supply and turnkey installations, working with colleagues in Process Engineering and Service Divisions to bring projects to commercial and technical completion within contract requirements. This Electrical Engineer will involve in design-focused responsibility including creating and revising control circuit designs, site wiring diagrams and panel layouts, using AutoCAD, along with project engineering elements.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist the Production Works Supervisor with progressing contracts through Engineering & Works using the company’s computer system and associated filing.
- Communicate with cross-functional project team members or departments and collaborate with suppliers and technical departments as needed regarding product design and operation.
- Progress the electrical engineering of contracts including control circuit design, site wiring diagrams and associated documentation, including compiling manuals.
- Prepare and revise electrical and associated mechanical drawings including circuit diagrams, panel layout drawings, and site wiring diagrams.
- Ensure accurate information is gathered and presented to Contracts Engineers to ensure equipment compliance with design data and to enable procurement and manufacture in line with contractual requirements.
- Prepare and update Technical Service Department documents including standard manual sections, instrument setup and datasheets, and technical communications. Provide product and component selection/use information to colleagues in Contracts and Service Departments.
- Assist commissioning and service engineers in the office and over the telephone with onsite technical and electrical queries and troubleshooting when required.
Experience:
- Practical engineering professional with experience in system design within an ISO 9001 quality-driven business.
- Preferably experienced in electrical engineering services with reference to steam or high-temperature process heating applications (other backgrounds considered).
- High voltage systems experience advantageous.
- Proficient in AutoCAD for Electrical Circuit Diagrams, P&IDs, and GA drawings. Knowledge of circuit design applications such as EPLAN or SEE Electrical is beneficial.
- Proficient in MS Office suite, including SharePoint.
- Track record of working on medium-sized, technology-oriented, multi-disciplinary projects.
- Excellent organisational and multi-tasking ability.
Qualifications:
- Practical engineering skills plus a formal qualification (HNC/HND or Degree) in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Experience in a similar role is desirable. Longer experience may be considered an advantage over academic achievement.
Communication Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work within a team environment and communicate effectively at all levels, including with customers and suppliers.
- Knowledge of a second European language is advantageous but not essential.

- Work as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team to ensure all plant, equipment, and services are maintained and functioning safely and efficiently.
- Carry out all planned preventative maintenance (PPM) tasks according to the maintenance schedule, ensuring that Statutory and Mandatory tasks are prioritised and completed on time.
- Respond promptly and effectively to reactive maintenance tasks, ensuring they are resolved within assigned priority timelines.
- Support in achieving and maintaining Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Ensure all work is completed to a high standard, complying with Health and Safety policies and procedures, including the correct use of uniform and PPE.
- Accurately record work activities and maintenance reports using IT systems, ensuring traceability and compliance with Statutory Regulations.
- Participate in the on-call rota, providing out-of-hours support as required.
- Ensure full understanding and adherence to Statutory Compliance relevant to the role.

To be successful for this Electrical Engineerrole you must have:
- City & Guilds 2360 Parts 1 & 2 (or equivalent qualification in Electrical Installation)
- City & Guilds 2391 Inspection & Testing (or equivalent)
- IEE 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)
- HVAP Qualification and relevant High Voltage experience
- IOSH Managing Safely
- Equivalent Mechanical qualifications may be acceptable if accompanied by appropriate experience
- Good knowledge of electrical systems, installation, fault finding, and repair
- Experience working in critical environments (e.g. data centres, hospitals, etc.)
- Strong IT skills for logging and tracking maintenance work
- Strong understanding of compliance and statutory maintenance requirements
