Reporting to the Reliability & Obsolescence Manager, the Workshop Engineer will be responsible for the testing, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of Rail Communication equipment. This role requires strong analytical skills, hands-on experience with electronic diagnostic tools, and the ability to work independently to troubleshoot and resolve hardware issues.
This is role requires someone to be in our workshop in Canning Town (London) 5 days per week.
What you'll do:
- Perform component-level troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of electronic devices and circuit boards.
- Use oscilloscopes, multi-meters, soldering equipment, and other diagnostic tools to evaluate and repair hardware.
- Analyse root causes of equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate repair records, test results, and documentation of work performed.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to provide feedback on recurring issues or product design improvements.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and company procedures during repair operations.
- Assist in inventory management of parts and tools required for repair activities.
- Assist product testing and quality control efforts as needed.
Who you are:
You will have previous experience working on component level repairs, as well as soldering and testing of equipment.
Key Requirements:
- A recognised engineering qualification - NVQ Level 3 and above or related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Proven experience in component level troubleshooting and repair of electronic systems.
- Proficient in reading schematics, datasheets, and technical documentation.
- Strong soldering and desoldering skills (including SMT and through-hole components).
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with ESD safety practices.

Hours: Monday - Friday, 07:00 - 15:00 (37.5 hours per week)

Duties:
- Test devices to relevant procedures and specifications using the appropriate software and configurations
- Diagnose faults on customer-returned devices in line with procedures and guidelines
- Repair products to the required standard, ensuring quality compliance at all stages
- Disassemble, reassemble, clean, and prepare customer field returns
- Accurately document all repairs in internal databases
- Identify and escalate process, quality, and performance issues promptly
- Provide technical feedback to Engineering and Management teams
- Operate and maintain department test equipment
- Provide support to other areas of the business when required
The ideal candidate must:
- Have technician-level experience in a production, repair, or electronics environment
