The Role

The Engineering Management Assistant will work provide support functions to the Hardware R&D Manager, development team and hardware projects in the UK.

This role is ideal for a recent graduate in an engineering discipline or an undergraduate looking for a valuable gap year in industry. You will gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced engineering environment, contributing to the entire product development lifecycle, from initial concept to final testing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Support: Assist the Engineering Manager in planning, scheduling, and tracking engineering development tasks to ensure projects are delivered on time.
  • Design Collaboration: Work alongside our mechanical and electrical design teams, providing support and contributing to the design process.
  • Documentation and Data Management: Utilise our Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools to maintain accurate and up-to-date engineering documentation.
  • Prototyping and Testing: Get involved in the hands-on testing of products and prototypes, recording and analysing test data to provide feedback to the design teams.
  • Meeting Coordination: Help to organise and document project meetings, ensuring clear communication and follow-up on action items.
  • Administrative Support: Provide general administrative support to the engineering department as required.

Required
Skills and Qualifications

  • A graduate in Mechanical, Electronic, or Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or an undergraduate currently undertaking a gap year as part of an engineering degree program.
  • A genuine interest in and foundational knowledge of mechanical and electronic design principles.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • A proactive and "can-do" attitude, with a willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
  • An interest in implementing AI to help us improve productivity.

Desirable

  • Prior experience with CAD software.
  • Familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
  • Previous internship or work experience in an engineering environment.

The successful Candidate will spend time in all three departments within Engineering: Design, Development and Programme Management. You will be working on real project work from day one and typical duties as an Engineering Placement Student at Caterpillar Shrewsbury involve:
+ Managing project plans, ensuring allocated resources are delivering the required tasks and that updated information on project status is available to all stakeholders. 
+ Designing components and systems of components using CAD modelling and simulation tools to create innovative solutions to real world customer problems. 
+ Supporting the build of prototype engines and transmissions in our dedicated Development Workshop by ensuring accurate build instructions are issued to the technicians in a timely manner. 
+ Creating and executing validation and verification test plans to demonstrate that prototype Engines and Transmissions meet our customers' requirements. 
+ Supporting the manufacturing facility by updating and maintaining engineering documentation, solving technical issues with build and test, and participating in product and process improvement initiatives.

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, including 5+ years leading distributed systems at enterprise scale.
  • Proven expertise in designing and managing high-throughput, low-latency systems with complex data structures.
  • Strong knowledge of modern data technologies — PostgreSQL, Cloud Spanner, graph and time-series databases, and distributed key-value stores.
  • Hands-on experience with container orchestration (Kubernetes), event-driven architectures, and stream processing frameworks such as Kafka or Flink.
  • Deep understanding of application security, vulnerability management, and static or dependency analysis workflows.
  • Demonstrated success in leading large, high-performing engineering teams and transforming technical culture.

Meta's security team is the central engine driving data and systems security at the company, supporting Meta and all of its family of apps. The Engineering Manager on our Access, Tooling, and Operations Management team is a key leadership position within the Security organization responsible for building and driving the access management strategy, tooling, and operations across Meta. We work across all parts of the company, from the corporate infrastructure to production to external services, interfacing with nearly every team in the company.This role leads a team of security engineers and analysts focused on access management strategy, engineering, and related operational activities. As an engineering manager, you will use your leadership skills, your technical experience, and your knowledge of access management principles and best practices to build successful partnerships within Security and with engineering teams across Meta. You will support and motivate a team that is bold, experienced, and technically skilled. You will be an effective communicator regardless of audience or medium, whether interacting with executives, external regulators, vendors, or the public. **Required Skills:**
Security Engineering Manager, Identity and Access Management Responsibilities:
1. Support a team of security engineers that build and improve access control systems at Meta. Provide technical guidance and mentoring to the engineers on the team. Advocate for the team's technical interests and needs
2. Support a team of engineers to build automated risk reduction and compliance solutions specially focused on Access Management space
3. Serve as an evangelist for the Access Management function and overall collaborative environment, both internally and externally
4. Support, grow, and lead an organization responsible for building services that secure Meta's infrastructure, services, and data through effective access policies, standards, and controls
5. Work closely with engineering leaders across the company to help them prioritize security issues in their products and drive adoption of the systems the team builds
6. Build and maintain reports, dashboards, and metrics around access controls by mining data analytically and extracting operational insights that drive continuous improvement
7. Help define Meta's global security priorities, with a focus on helping the company manage access to user data
8. Develop relationships and work cross-functionally with many partners across organizations and functions, and as a result, increase the impact of the team's work
9. Manage the best engineers in the world, including helping to hire and grow the team
10. Manage performance of the team and recognize high performers and support those who are struggling

13. Demonstrated experience working with many cross-functional partners and managing programs that require management team support and buy-in
14. Experience providing technical leadership and guidance, and thinking strategically and analytically to solve problems
15. BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline or equivalent experience
