The role is highly varied and will involve working on marine-based construction and civil engineering projects. Day-to-day tasks may include piling operations, crane operation, welding and fabrication, general site preparation, installation work, and boat operations.

The ideal candidate will have experience in some of the above areas and a willingness to learn and upskill through structured training. You must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and be confident working on or around water. The role offers long-term career progression with training available in areas such as NVQs in Piling, welding & fabrication, crawler crane operation, boat handling, and various site certifications (NPORS, CPS, etc.).

The team is responsible for a several testing facilities at the bp Pangbourne Technology Centre.  Currently a major programme of investment is in progress to transition the campus into a centre of excellence for electric mobility and energy technologies.  In the coming years the AET team will operate a new battery testing centre with capability for climatic testing of battery cells, modules and packs and electric vehicle chargers.  There is also a newly opened Data Centre Test Facility which includes several immersion tanks for server testing.  Finally the team will be operating tribology test rigs to support the engine oil research and development.

Within the AET department, the Operations Team has responsibility for the management of all AET facilities and equipment to help deliver the customer projects and maintain safe and reliable operations.  In the end state the team will be comprised of technicians, engineering technicians, electrical engineers, apprentices, and HSSEQ specialists.  This team collaborates with the Operations Team Leader.  The Operations Team works closely with the project engineers whose primary responsibility is the execution of customer testing projects.  It also works very closely with other partner groups on site including HSSE, Quality and Workplace. 

The Engineering Technician will sit within the Operations Team.  Their responsibilities will include cover maintaining and operating existing facilities, installing new equipment, and assisting the project engineers in the setup, development and execution of customer projects.  Whilst they will be expected to develop and hone specialist skills in a particular field, they will to need to be able to support and work across any of the areas within AET.

  • Developing and honing specialist technical skills e.g. battery technology, instrumentation, IT equipment etc…
  • Supporting the Operations Team Leader in ensuring best engineering and HSSE practices and upheld at all times including drafting risk assessments, Standard Operating Procedures and Management Of Change processes.
  • Design, developing, building, installing and commissioning new equipment.
  • Assisting project engineers in developing new measurement techniques and test methods.
  • Implementing test programmes.
  • Supporting in routine facility and equipment inspections, maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintain up to date technical and safety training.
  • Actively contributing to building a collaborative and transparent #OneTeam safety culture.

Essential Education:

  • NVQ Level 3 in an automotive field or equivalent.

Essential Experience and Job Requirements:

  • 3 years + working in an applied engineering / safety critical environment (automotive / data centre desirable)
  • Experience of working in a testing / R&D environment
  • Good technical knowledge of either automotive or data centre systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of test control systems and instrumentation
  • Basic data analysis skills (in MS Excel or equivalent)
  • Basic knowledge of electric vehicle powertrain HV systems or data centre / IT systems.
  • Ability to work autonomously, handling multiple tasks, understanding priorities and ensure timely execution of required tasks
  • Use of Microsoft office to an intermediate level

Desirable criteria

  • HNC or HNC in automotive field or equivalent
  • Advanced knowledge of electric vehicle powertrain HV systems or data centre / IT systems.
  • IMI level 3 in electric vehicle or hybrid systems.
  • Prior experience in working with HV automotive electrical sytems with Authorised / Senior Authorised Persons qualifications
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of data centre technology with particular emphasis on immersion or direct to chip cooling systems.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of engine tribology and tribological testing equipment and techniques.
  • Experience in programming environments such as Python or Labview
