You'll join our Science and Engineering Programme, gaining hands-on experience in civil engineering within a dynamic and safety-focused environment. What You'll Be Doing
During your Science & Engineering Civil Engineering Industrial Placement, you'll be immersed in practical learning and supported by mentors and collaborative teams. Past students have contributed to safety improvement campaigns, supported radiation protection strategies for new power stations, and helped maintain condition monitoring programmes across operational sites.
This placement offers the chance to apply your academic training to genuine industry problems while completing modules that contribute towards your degree.

Overview:
We are seeking an Engineering Technician (workshop based ) for our client based in Cheddar. You will be responsible for the repair, maintenance, and testing of electrical motors, pumps, gearboxes, together with other mechanical equipment. This hands-on role requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to workshop tasks as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose faults and carry out repairs on electrical motors, pumps, gearboxes, and associated equipment.
- Dismantle, inspect, clean, and reassemble components to manufacturer specifications.
- Perform routine maintenance and testing to ensure equipment is safe and operational.
- Fault-finding on breakdown equipment, demonstrating excellent problem-solving and time management skills
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and company policies.
- Operate workshop machinery and tools safely and efficiently.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed, parts used, and time taken.
- Assist with inventory management and ordering of spare parts.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within the workshop.
- Ensure deadlines are met to meet with customer expectations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- To be available for call outs (on a rata basis) or overtime as directed by the Workshop Supervisor or Manager.
- Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively with supervisors.
Skills & Attributes:

Job Description
We are seeking a hands-on Toolmaker Engineering Technician to specialise in precision toolmaking to extremely tight tolerances. This role is essential for supporting production agility, ensuring equipment reliability, and upholding site safety standards.
Key Responsibilities of a Toolmaker Engineering Technician
- Manufacture and refurbish high-precision, low-tolerance tooling using both manual and CNC equipment.
- Collaborate with design teams to develop new tooling solutions based on engineering drawings.
- Provide creative and timely solutions to manufacturing challenges and propose innovations to improve processes.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient workshop environment through proactive housekeeping and adherence to safety protocols.
- Support the maintenance team with various activities as requested.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to optimize operational efficiency.
- Assist in developing colleagues, including mentoring apprentices and sharing technical expertise.
Key Skills of a Toolmaker Engineering Technician
- Expertise in both Manual and CNC milling and turning (experience with specified proprietary machines is highly desirable).
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to work to extremely tight tolerances.
- Strong problem-solving capabilities, effective decision-making, and an innovative mindset.
- Excellent task prioritisation and time management skills.
- Clear communication and the ability to collaborate across functions.
- Apprentice-trained engineering qualification or equivalent technical certification.
