Role Overview
As Engineering Deputy Shift Manager , you’ll support the Engineering Shift Manager in leading a team of multi-skilled engineers and support staff. You’ll play a key role in driving maintenance performance, delivering operational excellence, and fostering a proactive engineering culture across two large-scale sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Shift Manager in leading and developing a large team of multi-disciplined Engineers and Assistants.
- Take full leadership responsibility in the absence of the Shift Manager.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement across performance, people, and process.
- Deliver hands-on technical support, assisting with fault-finding, planned maintenance, and project work as required.
- Manage day-to-day contractor performance and ensure adherence to SLA targets.
- Conduct all aspects of people management including appraisals, RTWs, disciplinaries, and performance reviews.
- Lead and engage your team through structured development plans and one-to-ones.
- Promote best practice in Health & Safety, ensuring compliance with company and statutory obligations.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, HR, H&S, and Planning to ensure equipment uptime and resource efficiency.
- Drive proactive maintenance planning through effective CMMS management and scheduling.
- Lead and support CI projects aimed at reducing downtime and improving asset reliability.
About You
- Experienced Engineering Leader from an automated warehouse, logistics, or FMCG background.
- Time-served and qualified to HNC or equivalent in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
- Confident in PLC/SCADA fault finding (Siemens preferred).
- Proficient in CMMS systems (Agility experience advantageous).
- Strong people leader — able to engage, develop, and motivate a diverse technical team.
- Excellent communicator with sound decision-making skills.
- Health & Safety qualified (IOSH or equivalent).
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-performance environment with changing priorities.

During your placement with Cargill, you will spend your time in one of our sites in the UK.
You will be responsible for small projects from initial design to completion. This will involve justification of projects, design, liaise with contractors to obtain the best possible solution, installation and finally commissioning. This could be anything from modification of pipe work to implementing changes in the process. You will participate in day-to-day manufacturing operations and this could include shift work.

Your new role
Our client is seeking an Estimator to join their pre-construction team in Manchester. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to further their career within a progressive contractor, with clear routes for development. You will be responsible for producing accurate, competitive, and timely tenders across a variety of civil engineering and infrastructure schemes.
Responsibilities will include:
Preparing accurate and detailed cost estimates for highways and civil engineering projects.
Reviewing tender documentation and identifying risks, opportunities, and value engineering options.
Engaging with clients, consultants, and supply chain partners to secure competitive prices.
Producing tender submissions and supporting bid presentations.
Working closely with the Estimating Manager and senior leadership to develop winning strategies.
Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of market rates, materials, and industry trends.
Supporting continuous improvement of estimating processes and systems.
What you will need to succeed:
Experience as an Estimator within civil engineering, highways, or infrastructure.
Strong understanding of construction methods, techniques, and pricing.
Ability to analyse drawings, specifications, and other documentation to prepare accurate estimates.
Good commercial awareness and negotiation skills.
IT proficiency with estimating software and MS Office (Excel in particular).
Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and organisational skills.
Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

- Develop detailed project plans, including scope, budget, timeline, and resource allocation.
- Oversee project teams, including engineers, contractors, and consultants, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
- Monitor project progress, identify potential risks and issues, and implement timely mitigation strategies.
- Manage project finances, including budgeting, cost control, and financial reporting.

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering.

- In-depth knowledge of construction methodologies, materials, and project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera).
- Experience in managing budgets of significant scale and complexity.
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet demanding deadlines.
- Familiarity with contract administration and dispute resolution.
