Our Summer placement programme is designed for the brightest and most ambitious undergraduates. You will benefit from the opportunity to enhance your academic studies with an engaging series of paid work placements that will give you a head start as you enter the world of work.

Laing O'Rourke offers undergraduate's placements to those students studying an construction related degree.

Our summer placement programme offers undergraduates a 6-12 week placement for those who are passionate about achieving their career ambitions in the built environment. Perform well enough and you may get the chance to join our Graduate Development Programme.

Your summer placement will give you an insight into our world-class project-based business. You will get hands-on experience of working on one of our construction sites, along with structured training, group activities, guidance and support which will aid you with your university education.

We understand that flexibility is important to you and therefore we've designed the programme to fit with your summer plans. A core six-week programme has been designed for you to get the most value from the summer placement and we ask that you are available for the duration to complete your six learning sessions. Key Deliverables and Accountabilities of a Civil Site Engineer Trainee

Follows safe working practices including wearing personal protective equipment and demonstrating a duty of care to yourself and others

  • Understands the necessity to comply with approved methods of working

  • Provides dimensional control for a section of the works

  • Undertakes as built surveys for a section of the works and presents results in format that can be included in project records if required

  • Raises Non-Conformance Report (NCR) for all non-conformances and reports potential non-conformances to line manager

  • Maintains quality control records in accordance with the Inspection & Test Plan

  • Assists site engineers with filing of drawings and other construction information. Completes relevant site records as required by senior members of staff (e.g., diary sheets)

  • Assists site engineers with materials quantification and testing

  • Reads and understands method statements and makes sure that site operations follow these methods accurately reporting any variances to supervisors and supervising

  • Has an understanding of the procedures that govern Temporary Works & Lifting

  • Effectively communicates basic technical information in a timely & accurate manner

  • Interrogates design information and determine if there are sufficient details to construct the works. Raises concerns with supervising engineers

  • Has a basic knowledge of how to operate the 3D model and its use in relation to the project

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field. A Master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in production engineering or manufacturing management within a relevant industry (e.g., automotive, aerospace, electronics).
  • Proven experience in leading and developing engineering teams.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, tooling, automation, and quality control systems.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities.
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software and ERP systems.
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations in a manufacturing environment.

About the role & team:

The Hunterston Engineering Manager will work with the engineering contractor (Kent – Woking) to ensure compliance with HVP standards and timely delivery of the engineering documents. The candidate will also manage one or more of the equipment packages from design through the procurement and manufacturing process to delivery to site.

The candidate will have a small team of direct reports who will be responsible for review and approval of the contractors design, providing input/feedback as necessary to ensure compliance with HVP requirements. This team will be responsible for the delivery of the various equipment packages through design, manufacture and delivery to site. They will drive for an optimised and fit for purpose design taking into consideration construction budget and an efficient build of the plant.

Job Purpose:

  • Manages and leads a small team of Multi-discipline Engineers to work collaboratively with the engineering contractor and coordinate production of engineering deliverables in accordance with the project plan.
  • Manages the interfaces on a project including multiple disciplines, multiple engineering centres,
  • Capable of performing duties with no direct supervision and within agreed schedules and budgets.
  • Has appreciation of multi-discipline engineering design activities. Manages all disciplines to achieve design consistency.
  • Supports the Project Management Team in planning and identifying technical issues that could limit progress or impact project budgets. Interfaces with the client.
  • Provides all necessary input and support to project progress and reporting.

Key Activities:

  • The responsibilities of the role will include, but not be limited to:
  • Typically works on a medium/large FEED and/or detailed design project.
  • Technically responsible for all engineering work and allocating, supervising and directing preparation of project deliverables. Subject to project size, will delegate some level of supervision and specific checking/approval activities to Project Engineers.
  • Capable of formulating resolutions to technically challenging and/or high profile issues with support from consultants and discipline Engineers and effectively communicating with Clients and Senior Management.
  • Monitors the engineering progress, addresses shortfalls, develops recovery plans where required and ensures plans are implemented. Provides feedback to Project Manager and engineering discipline supervisors as and when required on the progress.
  • Attends project review meetings and ensures that associated reports are compiled and distributed accordingly.
  • Reviews the ITB (Invitation to Bid) documents submitted in the proposals stage, prepares/reviews man-hour estimates and provides input to project execution plan.
  • Identifies a clear scope of work and supervises preparation of the Technical Document Register (TDR). Responsible for planning/scheduling all engineering activities and manpower resource. Quantifies the total number of engineering deliverables, man-hour allocation and format of delivery, and other requirements for execution of the work. Provides necessary regular project controls/ reporting input to Project Management.
  • Provides input to the project execution plan and coordination procedures for the project.
  • Approves all engineering deliverables and ensures appropriate personnel in place to undertake competent checking across all disciplines.
  • Provides support to procurement for long lead items: approves Technical Requisitions, vendor documentation reviews and Technical Bid Evaluation to ensure design conformance.
  • Ensures compatibility and conformance with HVP specifications and recommends cost effective improvements to equipment selection/specifications within the scope of specifications and requirements.
  • Consults Quality Assurance with any quality issues ensuring compliance with Quality procedures, Project Quality plan and Design Integrity processes and procedures. Coordinates Internal and 3rd party audit requests and facilitates audit procedures of engineering systems within the department.
  • Participates in and may lead multi-discipline Engineering Design Reviews and provides all necessary input and approval to close out of actions.
  • Coordinates preparation and presentation of the final documentation in accordance with requirements of the acceptance certificates. Participates in a formal review of the project with relevant parties on completion, and identifies opportunities for learning and development.
  • Participates in employee performance evaluations, establishes performance criteria, identifies employee strengths and weaknesses and recommends training and development requirements.
  • Performs related duties as and when instructed by Direct Supervisor.

  • Receive and inspect incoming parts, ensuring they meet quality standards before storage.

  • Utilize inventory management software to track stock levels and report on usage trends.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently while also being a team player.
  • Basic computer skills for inventory tracking and data entry.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with engineers and other team members.
