Principal Systems Engineer
Location: Coventry / West Midlands (Hybrid 2–3 Days Per Week)
Job Type: Permanent
Salary: Up to £61,500
Overview
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Principal Systems Engineer to join a leading defence engineering programme working on some of the UK’s most advanced and secure systems. We are hiring across two core focus areas :
- Governance & Process Specialists – Expertise in engineering lifecycle management (LCM) , compliance, process development, and technical governance.
- IV&V / Integration Specialists – Experience in requirements capture, integration, verification, and validation (IV&V) , technical documentation, and systems testing.
- If your background aligns strongly with either of these areas, your experience will be highly relevant for upcoming programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead requirements capture, analysis, and traceability across multiple projects
- Deliver compliant technical solutions aligned with programme and regulatory needs
- Provide expertise in IV&V or engineering governance and process control
- Author technical documentation including design artefacts, test specifications, and change deliverables
- Support full engineering lifecycle management (LCM) from concept to operational acceptance
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure delivery within quality, schedule, and cost objectives
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to process improvement initiatives
Required Skills & Experience
Essential (either focus area):
- Proven background in Systems Engineering within defence, aerospace, nuclear, automotive, or secure environments
- Experience in at least one of the following:
- • Governance & Process Control – LCM compliance, engineering standards, stakeholder assurance
- • Integration, Verification & Validation (IV&V) – test planning, execution, defect resolution
- Strong technical documentation and stakeholder communication skills
- Familiarity with working in regulated, safety-critical, or high-integrity environments
Desirable:
- Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., IBM DOORS)
- STEM degree or equivalent experience
- Chartered or working towards CEng status
- ISTQB or equivalent certification
- Prior experience on submarine, maritime, defence, or secure communications projects
Security Clearance Requirement
Due to the sensitive nature of the work, candidates must hold sole British citizenship and be eligible to obtain or currently hold SC or DV clearance .

An exciting opportunity has arisen for Senior Systems Engineers to join high-profile defence engineering programmes working on some of the UK’s most advanced and secure systems. We are recruiting across multiple specialisms, meaning engineers with expertise in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) , Systems Architecture , or Requirements & Acceptance will all be considered. If you have strong systems engineering experience within a regulated environment, this is an excellent chance to shape cutting-edge solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver systems engineering solutions across the full engineering lifecycle
- Lead or contribute to requirements capture, analysis, and acceptance activities
- Support the design, modelling, and integration of complex systems
- Produce technical documentation , including design artefacts, models, and validation reports
- Apply MBSE principles to support requirements, analysis, verification, and validation
- Provide input to system and sub-system architectures , defining structure, interfaces, and derived requirements
- Contribute to estimates, proposals, and planning activities across multiple programmes
- Mentor junior engineers and share specialist knowledge within your domain
Required Skills & Experience
Essential (at least one of the following):
- Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE): Experience with modelling tools (e.g. Enterprise Architect, SysML), model integration, and supporting V&V activities
- Systems Architecture: Defining logical, functional, and physical architectures, supporting design reviews, and shaping system concepts
- Requirements & Acceptance: Requirements capture, validation, and acceptance evidence using tools like DOORS or similar
- Understanding of full engineering lifecycle and relevant safety/environmental standards
- Strong stakeholder communication and technical documentation skills
- Background in defence, aerospace, nuclear, automotive, or similarly regulated environments
Desirable:
- Experience with SysML, ISO15288, or other modelling frameworks
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards CEng
- INCOSE membership or relevant systems engineering certifications
- Prior exposure to maritime, submarine, or other secure programmes

PLC programming experience is required.
The Role
- Write the software for the Omron PLC, HMI, program the Fanuc robots
- Develop the control systems from the concept stage through to the final detailed stage
- Working with project leader in planning, organising and managing meetings with the customer
- Specifying and purchasing components
- Assist with the preparation and compiling of manuals
37.5 hours per week, early finish Fridays
