An exciting opportunity has arisen for you to join a leading civil engineering and infrastructure contractor as SHEQ Advisor, working on a freelance basis. This is an immediate requirement with a roughly three-month contract length, potentially more. The schemes are covering roads, highways and heavy civils works across schemes in Kent.
Reporting into Senior Management you will be:
- Reviewing, improving and approving Health and Safety plans
- Monitoring and reporting Health and Safety performance
- Managing sub-contractors and their performance whilst coaching a Health & Safety ethos out on-site
- Providing operational support in managing safety and driving continuous improvement in site safety
- To provide the project team with competent advice on current HSE legislation applicable to the activities
- Promoting a positive culture across all levels of the team
You will be well-versed in coaching and mentoring personnel, controlling their safety output on-site and ensuring compliance alongside client satisfaction. You will be:
- An excellent communicator, comfortable building relationships from site to board level
- NEBOSH/NCRQ-qualified (ESSENTIAL)
- Civil engineering industry experience, ideally roads and infrastructure (ESSENTIAL)
- A solutions-led H&S professional, capable of identifying and managing risk

THE POSITION
We are hiring an EHS Advisor on a Fixed Term Contract focusing on a Risk Assessment improvement and development project. You will support and contribute to the development, implementation and maintenance of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS), Biosafety (BSY) and Bio-security strategies, procedures and initiatives across the Pirbright site to deliver proactive EHS, Biosafety and Bio-security behaviours and enable employees to work in a compliant way, within an environment that demands strict regulatory and corporate requirements and awareness.
This is a fully site-based role based in Pirbright on a Fixed Term Contract ending 31 October 2026 .
WHAT YOU’LL DO
EHS/BSY management
• Provide advice and recommendations to employees on matters of EHS to ensure compliance with UK EHS legislation and Corporate Requirements
• Participate in the creation, development and maintenance of EHS/BSY documentation such as SOPs and Risk assessments
• Ensure all incidents, near misses and accidents are recorded, investigated and filed
• Undertake EHS inspections/BSY audits in agreed locations
• Support priority projects as assigned
• Assist in the development and maintenance of Pirbright site incident response and crisis management processes
• Conduct periodic validation of fumigation locks at the Pirbright site
• Participate in Global EHS audits and Regulatory (HSE or Environment Agency) visits
• Support the follow up and close out of identified actions from investigations, risk assessments, inspections and audits
REQUIREMENTS
• NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent qualification
• Good spoken and written communication skills
• Able to use computer systems eg Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Ability to manage time effectively, being able to plan and complete work to schedule
• Demonstrates a positive 'can do' attitude, building relationships and upholding processes and procedures
• Knowledge and experience of EHS/BSY regulations and legal framework
