We are looking for a proactive and motivated Environmental Manager to lead the company's environmental initiatives, support our sustainability goals and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and best practice.

This role includes line management of a small team of environmental professional.

This role is operational and the incumbent will be responsibility for a number of sites as their dedicated environmental adviser.

Key Accountabilities:

Environmental Assurance

  • Ensure their allocated sites are compliant with environmental legislation and company and client requirements
  • Identify and share good practice, trends from internal and external audits, incidents and near misses
  • Contribute to the delivery of sustainability targets, including carbon reduction, waste minimization, and resource efficiency
  • Monitor legislation and industry changes to ensure VolkerStevin policies and procedures remains relevant and up to date
  • Provide guidance, advice and direction to the business to ensure legal compliance is maintained
  • Contribute to pre-qualification questionnaires and tenders

Team Management

  • Line manage a team of environmental professionals, providing guidance, mentoring and advice
  • Set clear objectives, conduct regular performance reviews, and encourage a collaborative and supportive team culture
  • Allocate resources effectively to meet project and operational needs
  • Manage the audit schedule for projects and departmental audits

Communication and coordination

  • Represent the business at Group level including ensuring VolkerStevin is appropriately represented in any working groups
  • Attend project meetings at a divisional level representing the environmental and sustainability function
  • Liaise with clients and Regulators
  • Communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders at all levels in person or in writing

About you

  • You will have an excellent working knowledge of environmental legislation and its application within an engineering and construction environment.
  • Ideally, you will have some line management experience but we will consider someone new to line management if they meet our other criteria and show an enthusiasm to take this on and learn.
  • As a subject matter expert / specialist, you will be required to provide advice on all business environment aspects and impacts such as waste, water management, permits and licences.
  • Previous experience and understanding of BREEAM Infrastructure, CL:AIRE DoW CoP, PAS2080 and ISO14001 is desirable.
  • The candidate will be a Chartered member of ISEF or equivalent and hold a recognised environmental qualification, be that a degree or similar.
  • There will be a requirement to travel and spend nights away.
  • The candidate will need a full driving licence as many sites are not easily accessed by public transport.
  • We are reasonably flexible about WFH, though being regularly visible on sites and in the office is essential.
  • British National due to security requirements.

We're looking for an Environmental Manager, HSQE to lead on compliance and sustainability across major civil engineering and construction projects between Bridgend and Swindon. This role is ideal for an Environmental Manager, HSQE who wants to combine technical expertise with career progression in a supportive, ambitious business.
 
 
Key responsibilities
As an Environmental Manager (HSQE), you'll:
·Develop and manage Environmental Management Plans.
·Ensure compliance with legislation, permits, and planning conditions.
·Carry out audits, inspections, and risk assessments.
·Liaise with regulators and local authorities.
·Drive sustainability - waste reduction, carbon management, biodiversity.
·Support BREEAM/CEEQUAL certifications.
·Provide training and toolbox talks.
·Lead investigations into incidents and non-conformances.
 
 
What we're looking for
To succeed as an Environmental Manager (HSQE), you'll need:
·A degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or similar.
·Experience in construction/civil engineering environmental management.
·Strong knowledge of UK legislation and ISO 14001 systems.
·NEBOSH Environmental Certificate (or equivalent).
·Professional membership (IEMA, CIWEM) is desirable.
