Executive Headteacher - The role:
You will ensure consistently high standards of teaching, learning, and pupil achievement, while building collaborative and motivated teams. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, you’ll also contribute to trust-wide initiatives and the ongoing development of best practice.
Executive Headteacher – Key responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership across the trust, setting clear vision, priorities, and measurable outcomes
- Direct and oversee school improvement initiatives, ensuring alignment with Ofsted, DfE, and statutory safeguarding requirements
- Foster strong and effective partnerships with Headteachers, staff, governors, parents, and external stakeholders to drive collaboration and excellence
- Represent the trust at regional and national level, contributing to audits, networks, and shared improvement projects that enhance organisational performance
- Champion and embed trust values, promoting a culture of continuous improvement
Executive Headteacher – You:
- An experienced Headteacher or Executive Headteacher
- Proven experience in a Multi-Academy Trust environment
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and NPQH (or working towards/existing equivalent)
- Represent the trust at regional and national level, contributing to audits, networks, and shared improvement projects that enhance organisational performance
- Deep understanding of the Ofsted framework

Job Purpose:
The role of the executive Headteacher is to:
- Provide effective leadership and management to a group of schools within the Polaris Community.
- Drive community-wide improvement priorities
- Ensure that the schools in the community are delivering high-quality provision and securing the best outcomes for pupils

Key Responsibilities:
Strategic leadership
- Embed our shared vision across the community, ensuring that it is understood by staff and parents
- Develop and review the community's strategic plan, ensuring that key objectives are used to develop school improvement plans
- Review and monitor progress of school improvement plans and self-evaluation forms, providing necessary challenge in order to achieve a sustained focus on the strategic objectives

Managing the Organisation
- Line manage senior leaders, providing effective support and challenge to help them secure best outcomes for pupils
- Carry out performance management in line with the community's procedures

- Allocate financial resources appropriately, efficiently and effectively
- Develop and retain high-quality staff through effective professional development and performance management
- Establish clear and open lines of communication with all stakeholders

- Ensure the community effectively and efficiently operates within the required regulatory frameworks and meets all statutory duties
- Ensure staff and pupils' safety and welfare through effective approaches to safeguarding, as part of duty of care

Teaching and learning
- Develop and implement a broad and balanced curriculum that meets the relevant statutory requirements
- Establish and sustain high-quality teaching across all subjects and phases, based on evidence
- Have ambitious expectations for all pupils, including those with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities, and promote an inclusive culture that enables all pupils to access the curriculum
- Establish curriculum leadership, including developing subject leaders with relevant expertise and access to professional networks and communities
- Promote a culture that encourages collaboration, where best practice is shared in order to secure the best outcomes for pupils
- Ensure valid, reliable and proportionate approaches are used to assess pupils' knowledge and understanding of the curriculum
Qualifications and Experience:
- Qualified teacher status
- Degree
- National professional qualification for headship (NPQH)
- Successful leadership and management experience in a school
- Teaching experience
- Involvement in school self-evaluation and development planning
- Demonstrable experience of successful line management and staff development
Skills and Attributes:
- Data analysis skills, and the ability to use data to set targets and identify weaknesses
- Understanding of high-quality teaching based on evidence, and the ability to model this for others and support others to improve
- Understanding of curriculum development
- Understanding of school finances and financial management

The Chair of the board will provide effective leadership, defining and developing strategic direction for Dysgu.
The Role of the Chair
The Chair of Dysgu Board (the Board) is appointed by Welsh Ministers and is responsible for leading the Board and setting the strategic direction for Dysgu and monitoring the delivery of the organisation's business strategy, plans and performance and objectives. Whilst the Board has this strategic level responsibility, the Chief Executive has responsibility in respect of the day-to-day operational management of Dysgu. Dysgu will be key to driving progress on the Welsh Government's key priorities of improving literacy, numeracy, wellbeing and inclusion in education, and the Chair's role will be critical in ensuring Dysgu remains focussed on these priorities.
The key responsibilities for the Chair include, but are not limited to:
- Providing vision and strategic leadership to the Board, ensuring that the Board as a whole is effective in developing a strategy and corporate business plans that are properly scrutinised and monitored
- Building effective working relationships with the Chief Executive and Directors
- Chairing Meetings and supporting the Board, ensuring expertise is brought in as appropriate
- Ensuring appropriate governance arrangements are established and implemented in line with best practice and the requirements of a public body, in accordance with company law
- The Chair will ensure that Dysgu champions diversity
- The Chair will be responsible for ensuring that they and the Board collectively and individually adhere to the Nolan seven principles of public life.
- Promoting the economic, efficient and effective use of staff and other resources.
- Ensure that all Board members are briefed fully on the terms of their appointment and on their duties, rights and responsibilities, including ensuring that they, together with other Board members, receive appropriate training.
- Working with Board members and Chief Executive to build a positive working environment and encourage a culture of open and effective scrutiny and challenge
- Assess the performance of individual Board members in accordance with the arrangements agreed with the Welsh Government.
- Attend an annual performance review, conducted by Welsh Ministers
- Working with the Chief Executive, in their role as Accounting Officer, ensure that appropriate governance arrangements are implemented in line with best practice and the requirements of a public body.
- Overseeing the work of the Chief Executive, providing appropriate support as necessary, including managing their performance.
- Representing the Body externally and fostering close working relationships with key stakeholders. Including representing the views of the Board to the Cabinet Secretary for Education.
The essential criteria for this role include:
To be considered, you must be able to demonstrate that you have the qualities, skills and experience to meet all essential criteria for appointment.
- Demonstrable ability to encourage a Board culture of effective and helpful challenge and scrutiny
- An outstanding record of leadership, organisational transformation and development at board level or equivalent. Able to demonstrate an ability to provide coherent leadership; defining and developing strategic direction; setting objectives; holding the Chief Executive to account for ensuring that activities are conducted efficiently and effectively.
- Excellent track record of engaging, inspiring and enthusing staff and stakeholders that demonstrates an inclusive and collaborative approach including working in partnership with staff representatives.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are required, including the ability to negotiate, persuade and influence and provide independent challenge and scrutiny whilst maintaining constructive relationships.
- A clear understanding of governance structures in an organisation and the ability to ensure the body's financial dealings are prudently and systematically accounted for, audited and publicly available showing a commitment to transparency and openness.
- Able to demonstrate a track record of commitment to and notable delivery against principles of equality and diversity. An ability to demonstrate understanding of the commitments of a public role.
- Demonstrable interest in education and understanding of the education system in Wales including an understanding of the future needs and challenges.
- Commitment to ensuring Dysgu drives progress on the Welsh Government's key priorities in education.

We are looking for an outstanding school leader who has a proven successful track record, with a comprehensive understanding of both the Education and Care setting for SEN, and the drive to develop positive and engaging relationships with all the key stakeholders working closely with our teams. As the School Principal / Head of service This role will require you to lead both the Education and the Residential aspect of the school as the Responsible Individual (RI) for the two children’s homes registrations.
You will have the experience and knowledge of the Children’s homes regulations and independent school standards to effectively lead the school. The children’s homes are managed by an experienced Registered Manager and the school with an experienced head teacher. Our very unique school and residential children’s homes sit on the same grounds

Desirable Qualifications

- NVQ or Diploma Level 5 in Leadership & Management in Residential Children's Services or equivalent
- Previous experience as a Registered Manager/RI role in a Residential Children's Care Setting
- NVQ Level 4 in Leadership and Management for Care Services
- Clean, current driving licence
About the school
The Forum School is a day and residential school supporting children up to 52-weeks for children and young people diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder and associated complex needs. The onsite homes are rated as Good in all areas with OFSTED (September 2024), the school is rated as RI, with Behaviour and Attitudes rated as being Good.
Located in the glorious Dorset countryside with 28 acres of land for play and relaxation, the school boasts of many facilities such as a theatre, sports hall, indoor and outdoor riding areas, climbing wall, multiple safe play areas and a swimming pool and stables.
Our children and young people have full access to the National Curriculum with teaching appropriately differentiated to meet their needs. In addition, The Forum School draws upon a proven programme of specialist education and 24-hour care with a wide range of clinical and therapeutic inputs. Multi-disciplinary teams and high staffing ratios ensure intensive individual support. In each class, six students benefit from the attentions of a teacher and at least two teaching assistants.
