Our client is a high profile membership body in the consulting industry. They have been investing heavily in their external affairs and governmental relations events and are looking for a confident and experienced Manager to join their team. In this role you will take the lead on managing a programme of 20+ events for their external affairs team.


Responsibilities will include –


  • Event planning and logistics including delegate liaison
  • Undertaking research projects to inform external affairs events content
  • Managing relationships with speakers including MPs, Ministers and senior industry figures
  • Managing events budgets


The successful candidate will have excellent project management skills and the ability to juggle tight deadlines as well as a proven track record delivering professional events including round tables, seminars and receptions. Extensive knowledge of the work of external affairs teams and an interest in strategy and policy is crucial.

Job description

Job holders in this grade will carry out a range of activities across communications professional disciplines to support efficient running of the directorate. This may involve being deployed to support emerging priority work.

External Affairs Officers can be required to deliver any or all of the following:

  • Support, prepare and deliver stakeholder engagements and events, such as our annual stakeholder conference and regular stakeholder meetings.
  • Work closely with colleagues in the Press, Digital and External Affairs team, and across the wider Communications directorate to develop and ensure delivery of targeted strategies in line with departmental priorities.
  • Research and prepare briefing documents for senior leaders, including ministers, permanent secretaries and executive board members to use when meeting external stakeholders.
  • Support the planning and organisation of communications to stakeholders around fiscal events such as The Budget and Spring Statement.
  • Anticipate issues before they occur, devising handling solutions for them and assessing outcomes, using learnings to influence future activity.
  • Own trusted, direct comms to comms relationships to support effective stakeholder relationship management and use this insight to inform and shape behaviour within HMRC.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders within HMRC and other government departments to enable accurate, appropriate and timely delivery of HMRC key messages.
  • Staff joining the Press, Digital and External Affairs team at this grade and above may be required to be part of the out of hours on call rota.

The successful candidate should be a member of the Government Communications Service (GCS) or be willing to join.

Person specification

Essential Criteria
  • Excellent written skills with the ability to be creative when drafting products. Note - your application will be checked for spelling, punctuation and grammar, with mistakes being considered in scoring
  • Experience of working collaboratively across teams and with external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, demanding and unpredictable environment while prioritising work, often under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the confidence to push back on senior colleagues' decisions or ideas should it be necessary.
  • Has the ability to take complex policy information and explain it to non-expert audiences in a straightforward way.

The role is based in Nottingham with travel across the East Midlands (e.g. job

Main purpose
  • To identify potential learners for training programmes via a variety of methods including engagement with job centres, referral partners and direct applicants.
  • To carry out screening and high quality IAG of learners to ensure suitability before enrolling learners onto training programmes.
  • Engage with employers to identify recruitment needs and provide a SWAP service.
  • To provide an effective and efficient customer service function to our external and internal customers, including learners, outside organisations and staff.
  • To ensure that Equality & Diversity practices are followed throughout the day-to-day activities, especially when dealing with learners and taking telephone calls.
