The Monetary and Capital Markets Department (MCM) of the International Monetary Fund has an opening for a Financial Sector Expert/Senior Financial Sector Expert in its Global Markets Analysis (GA) Division. The post is based in GA's London office, as part of a small team.

The key functions of the GA division include monitoring and assessing developments in global financial markets and systemically important financial institutions, analyzing risks to global financial stability and helping to ensure that the Fund takes consistent and well-informed views about financial risks and policies to mitigate these risks.

The main responsibilities of the analyst position are to:

  • Analyze macro-financial developments and financial stability risks for major European economies and contributing to thematic notes.
  • Contribute to the analysis presented in the IMF's flagship Global Financial Stability Report as well as analysis presented in various research blogs or ad hoc reports.
  • Build tools and develop databases to support high frequency market surveillance across the main asset classes with a focus on developed and emerging markets in the European time zone.
  • Contribute to GA's daily markets monitor (Global Markets Monitor or GMM) and Early London Update (internal report) with regular coverage of mature and emerging markets primarily in Europe but also in Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
  • Support the IMF's outreach activities in London.
  • Develop financial market contacts to obtain context for asset price movements, gauge emerging stability risks, and brief senior MCM management.
  • Help manage the practical issues associated with the London office including administrative, security and IT issues

Minimum Qualifications
  • A master's degree in finance, economics, econometrics or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of relevant professional work experience in financial markets, or macroeconomic analysis or supervision, acquired in financial institutions, public sector or at an international organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial markets and proven ability to analyze and interpret asset market developments.
  • Strong analytical skills. Adept at conducting high-quality data analysis both independently and in teams.
  • Ability to deliver concise, insightful written analysis under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in an international environment and engage with colleagues across time zones.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Strong skills in Excel and data management. Candidates with advanced knowledge of econometric packages (EViews, MATLAB, Stata, Python, R, or similar) will be preferred.
  • Knowledge of economic/financial databases and information services (e.g., Bloomberg, CEIC, Haver Analytics)

This vacancy shall be filled by a 3-year Term appointment in accordance with the Fund's new employment rules that took effect on May 1, 2015.

Your skills and experience

About the role 

This pivotal R&D Tax Financial Consultant role will see you transform complex climate technology breakthroughs into compelling, HMRC compliant R&D tax credit financial claims that unlock vital government support for pioneering businesses. You’ll work directly with visionary founders and CEOs behind breakthrough technologies - from EV software and sustainable materials to smart building solutions and novel carbon capture innovations. Ideally CTA,ATT or CCAB qualified, you’ll be technically proficient with strong R&D tax knowledge and at least three years’ experience preparing the financial side of R&D claims. Key responsibilities:

  • Prepare robust R&D tax claims, including detailed analysis of financial transactions to identify qualifying costs and apply accurate cost allocation and relief calculations in line with HMRC guidance; 
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of the different R&D tax schemes available and the eligibility criteria for each; 
  • Liaising effectively with external bodies such as HMRC, responding promptly to any questions to ensure smooth claim processing;
  • Manage a portfolio of clients, delivering excellent customer service and building trusted relationships to support long term growth;  
  • Supporting the business development team and Head of R&D Tax in identifying opportunities to add value and innovation through R&D tax planning, representing the business at industry events and helping to grow the firm’s profile;
  • Apply a commercial mindset to strategically drive the growth of the R&D tax offering and promote tax capabilities across the wider team;
  • Proactively identify R&D tax planning opportunities during reviews and confidently raise these senior stakeholders and partners;
  • Share R&D tax knowledge with colleagues, contributing to the training and helping to strengthen the firm’s overall technical ability;
  • Keep up-to-date with changes in R&D tax legislation and best practice to maintain a high standard of technical advice;
  • Prepare and file CT600 and CT600L amendments for submission to HMRC, ensuring accuracy and compliance.

Requirements

We expect you to have 

  • Ideally CTA, ATT or CCAB qualified, or qualified by experience;  
  • 3-5 years’ experience in R&D tax consultancy or R&D tax within an accountancy practice, with in-depth knowledge of UK R&D Tax Credits legislation;
  • Strong technical proficiency with an excellent working knowledge of the R&D tax schemes, including the CIRD guidelines;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide proactive advice to clients and discuss opportunities confidently with partners;
  • A collaborative approach, a good listener, supportive team player and someone who encourages others;
  • A high level of attention to detail, with strong analytical and creative problem solving skills;
  • Self motivated and organised, with the ability to deliver work to deadlines;
  • A genuine interest in sustainability and climate solutions, you’ll share our mission driven mindset and want your work to make a positive impact.

Desirable

  • Experience working on HMRC R&D tax enquiries or compliance checks;
