We are seeking an experienced and motivated Food Safety Consultant to join our dynamic Public Protection team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a critical role in safeguarding public health by ensuring food businesses across the city comply with legal standards and best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Carry out inspections of unrated food businesses, including newly registered establishments.
- Undertake routine inspections of Category C and D rated food premises in line with the Food Law Code of Practice.
- Conduct follow-up visits, re-inspections, re-ratings, and take appropriate action including enforcement measures, where required.
- Respond to and investigate selected food complaints as allocated.
- Assist in closure procedures and enforcement where there are serious food safety breaches.
- Where appropriate, undertake Category A and B inspections (high risk) of businesses you have previously had involvement with.
- Contribute to achieving a total of up to 1,000 inspections as part of a wider team effort.
Essential Requirements:
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Health or Food Safety.
- Registration with the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) or equivalent.
- Demonstrable experience in conducting food hygiene inspections and enforcement action under the Food Safety Act 1990 and associated regulations.
- Detailed knowledge of the Food Law Code of Practice and its application in local authority settings.
- Ability to work independently and manage caseload effectively to meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication, reporting, and interpersonal skills.

What you'll be doing
As Food Safety Technologist, you will support the implementation of the food safety and quality management systems by verifying that standards, customer requirements and legal obligations are being met in full.
- Execute microbiological swab plans, complete hygiene audits and update training documentation to ensure legal, safety and customer compliance
- Investigate customer complaints to establish any failures within the manufacturing process to ensure that any issues can be addressed in the short and longer term
- Provide insight from audit results to site governance meetings to drive audit compliance, to share best practice and to encourage continuous improvement of quality systems
- Ensure that procedures, allergen matrices and hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) are up to date to maintain the integrity of the quality management system (QMS) documentation
- Represent the technical team at New Product Development (NPD) forums and complete follow up actions to ensure that all new products have food safety considerations included from the outset
- Complete internal audits on food safety processes as part of the Internal Audit team to ensure that the sites are always audit ready
- Complete root cause analysis of any audit failures and feedback conclusions and recommendations to relevant managers to ensure that the issue is eliminated for the future
