Senior Frontend Developer - Deep Tech GenAI Startup

Title: Senior Frontend Developer

Location: Hybrid, London (1 day a week on-site)

Salary: 90,000-150,000 + equity (depending on experience)

I'm working with a well-funded Deep Tech GenAI startup that is reimagining mechanical engineering processes. They've assembled a world-class team from Cambridge, MIT, and Google across software, data science, theoretical physics, and computational geometry to build tools that transform large-scale engineering through machine learning and generative AI.

They are now looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer with a passion for functional programming and elegant, performant user interfaces. The frontend stack includes React, TypeScript, Elm, and WebGL, with the backend built mainly in Python and running on AWS.

Core skills:

• Strong senior-level frontend expertise in JavaScript, React, and TypeScript
• Experience in functional programming (Elm, Haskell, WebGL)
• Proven track record in small, scaling teams
• BSc in Computer Science (or related discipline) from a leading university, or equivalent practical experience
• Ability to commute to London once a week

Nice-to-haves: OpenGL, Vulkan, Python, Tailwind CSS, AI/ML exposure

Requirements

Your technical skills:

• Building large-scale applications with React, Redux and Next.js;
• Good demonstrable TypeScript experience;
• Knowledge of React testing framework.
• Experience with WebSockets and real-time messaging;
• Desire to learn new technologies and frameworks;
• Previous experience working on large complex applications;
• A passion for video games and esports is a plus.

We would get especially excited if you have experience with the following:

• Webpack
• Attention to code quality and readability
• Knowledge of optimisation strategies (i.e. code splitting, lazy loading, tree-shaking, caching, etc…)
• Extensive experience and knowledge around best practices when it comes to testing. (Unit tests, e2e testing, etc…)
• Knowledge of web best practices and Web Vitals metrics
• Internationalization libraries (react-intl or react-i18next);
• Monorepo familiarity, i.e. Nx, Lerna, Turborepo.
• Previous experience with scalable architecture/systems serving thousands and millions of users seamlessly.
• Development with Security awareness, being aware of the top ten OWASP attack vectors to protect from. I.e. XSS, CSRF etc…

The Senior Frontend Engineer is based in London, reports to the Sr. Director, Engineering, and is a part of the UK Skimlinks Engineering Team. The Senior Front-end Enginee r is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining user interface to create visually appealing and functional interfaces that provide a seamless user experience. Their role involves translating design mockups into code, optimizing performance, ensuring cross-browser compatibility, and implementing responsive design to accommodate various devices and screen sizes. Front-end engineers also collaborate closely with back-end developers, UX/UI designers, and other stakeholders to integrate the front end with server-side logic and create cohesive, user-friendly products.

As a Senior Frontend Engineer, your role will involve:

• Collaborating with our design and product teams to work on features that our customers love
• Focusing on creating code that is elegant, easy to maintain, and well-tested
• Taking part in the early stages of product planning, highlighting potential blockers on the front-end side, and providing high-level estimations and timelines
• Identifying refactoring needs and actively participating in efforts to address them
• Playing an active role in the development of our most mission-critical products and services
• Providing technical mentoring to junior team members
• Collaborating with highly capable engineers who enjoy working together and supporting new team members
• Considering ways to make things simpler, more intuitive, and easier for our customers

Requirements

Our front-end team is responsible for our customer-facing interfaces (Publisher Hub), Chrome extension (Editor Tool), and high-performance Javascript deployed on some of the largest Publishers in the world.

In our tech stack, we use the latest technologies, such as React, Next.js, Typescript, Tanstack Cypress.io, Jest, Docker, and Kubernetes, all hosted in Google Cloud.

About You:

• High degree of fluency in JavaScript, with knowledge of modern techniques as well as core JS concepts.
• Deep understanding of React and it’s ecosystem
• Experience with highly performant vanilla Javascript solutions
• Solid understanding of TypeScript
• Experience integrating with cloud services, and RESTful APIs.
• Modern frontend build tooling (Webpack/Parcel, ESlint, Cypress, Jest, Babel, NPM/Yarn)
• Proficiency in frontend markup and styling 
• Interested in writing high quality, robust code involving approaches such as unit testing, code coverage and static code analysis.
