SAE London is seeking a Games Art & Animation Lecturer to collaborate on teaching in our Games Art & Animation program. This role involves preparing and delivering on-campus teaching including tutorials and workshops.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver and facilitate learning through a variety of engaging methods of pedagogy.
- Enhance students’ learning experience and outcomes through focused talks, and delivery of lesson plans and course material as required.
- Providing timely and useful feedback to students to challenge their thinking and ensure understanding.
- Effective, consistent, and timely marking of assessments.
Essential Criteria:
- Possess outstanding communication, interpersonal skills, be highly organised and possess good time management skills.
- Demonstrated student service orientation.
- Full working rights for work in the UK. This role is fully based on campus.
- Experience in Game Art and Animation, using tools such as Maya, Substance, Photoshop, and ZBrush.
Desirable Criteria:
- Master’s degree in a related field, or Hons degree. In progress or complete and/or industry experience.
- Relevant industry experience in games production pipeline and relevant software, including use of Unreal Engine.
- Teaching experience, including the creation of session plans and preparation of materials.
- Specialisms including motion capture, cloth, particles design, and VFX, Nuke, Blender or other related software.
- Experience in project-based learning, using flipped teaching techniques and other contemporary forms of facilitating learning.
- Experience in using technology in learning, including virtual learning platforms.
- Ability to teach across other disciplines, including VFX, games, and content creation.

Do you have a solid understanding the core art fundamentals; colour, composition, value, lighting, form, perspective, and anatomy across their work?
As an Art Generalist you'll create, deliver, and assist in the production of a broad range of 2D and 3D visual elements, these may include outfits, weapons, props, concept art and illustrations for UI and marketing. You'll work closely with developers, designers, and art leadership to produce high quality artwork, in a timely fashion that supports gameplay and follows the established art direction and style guidelines.
What you'll be doing:
- Produce high quality concept art for characters, environments, and objects.
- Creating high quality Icons and illustrations for in game UI and marketing purposes.
- Produce high quality 3D character and environment assets ranging across creatures, humans, weapons, objects, architecture kits, and set dressing.
- Work with a variety of industry standard tools including Photoshop, Illustrator, Zbrush, Maya, Substance Painter, and Marmoset Tool bag 3 to produce artwork.
- Work closely with Concept Artists and Animators and other disciplines to ensure assets are consistently designed, optimised to be in line with our art style.
- Work closely with Content Developers to ensure assets are correctly implemented in the game engine.
- Work with Tools Developers to troubleshoot and improve existing in-house tools.
- Collaborating with the rest of the team to aid with future art asset and project ideas as well as working closely with the rest of the art team, leads, principals and art directors to maintain and develop the games visual style.
- Collaborate with the design team to solve problems where art and design meet.
What we're looking for:
Concepting and Illustration:
- Ability to create environments in an array of styles, with close attention to composition, lighting and perspective.
- Architecture – Strong understanding of the layout and special proportions a range of buildings, both realistic and imaginary.
- Character design – Creative, unique and interesting characters in a range of styles.
- Solid graphic design skills showcased by portfolio examples.
- Experience in creating a wide range of UI elements for both PC & Mobile platforms.
- Capable of producing speed paintings of composition, and mood.
3D modelling:
- Excellent skills in creating 3D models including characters, environments and props using Maya
- Understanding of working practices with regard to geometry resolutions, modelling for deformation (animation) and modelling for texture placement.
Sculpting:
- Ability to create high resolution sculptures in Z-Brush and extracting (baking) out high resolution topological details to texture maps (where applicable).
Texturing:
- Good UV texture placement and mapping with effective texture page use and a uniform distortion free texel density.
- Experience creating texture maps at all applicable cross-platform resolutions.
- Proficiency in the creation (also sampling and baking) and adjustment of texture stages for high quality, current gen in-game surfaces. This can include normal maps, specular maps, ambient occlusion, environment maps, cube maps etc.
Surfacing:
- Good working practices in the accurate simulation of surfaces using hardware shaders
- Texture map creation (normal, specular, diffuse, ambient occlusion, cavity etc)
