An established and growing electrical and automation engineering business, operating within the marine, renewable energy, and offshore sectors, is seeking experienced Electrical Design Engineers to join their Teesside-based team.
This role offers the opportunity to be involved in the full project lifecycle - from initial concept through to commissioning and final documentation - delivering engineered solutions for global projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Produce design documentation, including functional design specs, FAT/SIT/SAT procedures, and basis of design.
Generate detailed design documents such as electrical schematics, GA drawings, cabinet/panel layouts, I/O lists, 3D models, BoMs, cause & effect matrices, and FMECA.
Liaise with Purchasing to prepare RFQs and technical specifications.
Support Production with technical queries and as-built documentation.
Carry out factory acceptance testing and site commissioning where required.
Compile project close-out documents including O&M manuals and spare parts lists.
Skills & Experience:
Proficiency in E-Plan, 3D modelling, and simulation platforms.
Experience designing systems from concept through to commissioning, including PLC/SCADA, power generation/distribution, and variable speed drives.
Background in marine and offshore/subsea systems is highly desirable.
Familiarity with control and automation software is an advantage.
Confident communicator with strong attention to detail and interpersonal skills.
Competent with Microsoft Office applications.
Qualifications:
Degree qualified in Electrical, Marine, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.

PURPOSE
o To act as the Designer for Capital projects on Electricity North West Ltd's system up to and including 132kV. To manage, and oversee, all aspects of design (from outline to detail) during the project life including, but not limited to, design, planning, approval, construction, commissioning and final handover.
o Working closely with the Project Manger, Construction Managers (and Construction Engineers) and Design Manager to ensure that all 132/33kV projects achieve the programme objectives of time, cost and quality, at each key milestone stage, to meet requirements of the agreed programme. Outputs reported from the programme form Key Performance Indicators to the Company's regulators.
o To ensure business processes and systems are aligned to obtain maximum performance, and that all projects / are managed on appropriate Company systems.
o Must establish and maintain a flexible and adaptable approach to change, being able to respond rapidly and develop creative solutions.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
o Accountable for developing and implementation design strategies that deliver cost effective solutions for the execution of project management associated with major electricity projects.
o Responsible for leading the design to ensure that projects are developed in the appropriate and consistent format carrying out substation design work on projects associated with the Capital programme.
o Management of appropriate contractors during the whole life of projects requiring liaison with project managers, design, construction and project control sections.
o Assessment, development and introduction of new Equipment, and Techniques, associated with Transmission Substation Plant, Protection, and Control schemes.
o Responsible for the providing accurate forecasts of information for the range of projects under their control
o Acting as Electricity North West Ltd's engineer for witness and acceptance of equipment Factory Acceptance Tests
o Production of technical specifications for all plant and equipment used on Grid & Primary major projects
o Responsible for developing, and agreeing with other departments, appropriate design standards
o Responsible for the Calculation of Protection Settings
KEY MEASURES AND TARGETS (Performance Indicators)
o Develop project designs within agreed dates.
o Manage project designs within agreed budgets and programmes.
o Provide information that is used in Value of Work forecasts for portfolio of projects to required timescales and accuracy.
KEY RELATIONSHIPS (Internal & External)
Operating effectively as part of the Grid and Primary Design team the post holder will forge strong working relationships with other team members within G&P Design, Electricity North West and Client organisations.
On a day to day basis, the post holder will liaise with:
o Other departments or business functions.
o Internal customers, particularly with regard to updates on Capital programmes, performance measures and budget forecasts.
o External customers and organisations.
DIMENSIONS (e.g. Direct Budget, Number of Direct Reports, Capex Influence, Opex Influence)
o Reports directly to the Design Manager/Design Team Leader.
o Budget: Will have responsibility for the design aspects of a portfolio of projects to the value of £1 -£20m/year depending on grade.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS (e.g. Specific industry or technical / professional / educational qualifications, key competencies, skills, behaviours or experience needed to satisfy full requirements of the role)
o Minimum of HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, ideally degree qualified leading to chartered status.
o Good Knowledge of 132kV, 33kV and 11/6.6kV systems and substations including switchgear, transformers, overhead and underground circuits and protection
o Experienced with electrical engineering design and practices and have good knowledge of the electricity distribution business
o Experience of CDM regulations relating to utility projects
o Good team working and communication skills and able to manage a range of internal staff, partners, consultants and contractors
o Creative thinker, able to pre-empt project/schedule issues and adapt to change
o Experience of Autocad, MS Office, in particular Excel
