We are seeking a **Senior Highways Engineer** to join our growing Scottish Roads and Highways team. As a Senior Highways Engineer you will be responsible for delivery of a wide range of different projects as part of a close-knit and supportive team. You will play a key role in delivering a high-quality service to our clients, including Local Authorities and Design and Build Contractors. Our portfolio includes a variety of roads and highways projects from smaller scale local improvements to large national strategic schemes and frameworks. You will contribute to the technical delivery of projects while working closely with our clients to influence the development of highways scheme's in the region. We also work with and support teams across the UK to deliver schemes for clients, both big and small.
As a Senior Highways Engineer you will oversee the work of others. You will lead and mentor some of our more junior engineers and technicians ensuring high quality output. **About You**

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Highways Maintenance Operative/Bridge Operative to join our Severn Bridges Inspection and Maintenance (SBIM) contract in Bristol, working on the Severn Bridge with occasional travel and work on the other two bridges including POW and Avonmouth. This role is onsite.

The SBIM contract is to deliver the inspection and maintenance programme along with scheme on behalf of National Highways. This is a great opportunity to learn about quality in the specialist structures industry.

Highway Maintenance Operative plays an important part in all aspects of highway maintenance works including routine and cyclic maintenance activities, minor civils' works, litter picking, etc. Undertake Winter and emergency call out and standby.

The standard hours of work are 37.5 per week + overtime available, and an optional callout rota.

What You'll Do:

  • Attend project and work briefings as required.
  • To drive/operate vehicles/plant requiring general and specialist skills including vehicle checks, routine maintenance, (eg oil and water checks etc) and cleaning.
  • All aspects of highway maintenance works including routine and cyclic maintenance activities, minor Civil's works, litter picking, painting, blasting, concrete works and road works, etc.
  • Winter maintenance operations.
  • Emergency call out operations.
  • Taking responsibility for the safety of yourself and others within your team to ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and safe operation to protect member of the public.

About the Role

Reporting into the Works Manager, the successful Highways Operative will be joining our team in Boroughbridge working on the highways project of works. Although you will be based in Boroughbridge, you will be required to travel across the assigned region. You will be working as a member of the Highways Maintenance Team responsible for general site duties including traffic management, routine works and plant operations.

What you'll be doing

  • Standing in for Ganger through absences and due to volume of works
  • Assisting and implementing compliance with safety processes and policies detailed in works safety plans and companies policies

  • Reviewing, improving and assisting with methods to reduce materials and waste on site

You must be willing and able to travel across the region of work related to this role

Due to the nature of the role, we do require the successful new colleague to hold a FULL UK manual car driving license with no more than 6 penalty points.

We are looking for a Highways Operative who is ideally:

  • A team player
  • In possession of (or willing to undertake) a CSCS Qualification

  • In possession of an HGV Class 1 or 2 licence, though if not, training will be given to the right candidate

  • Knowledge of company generic risk assessments, safe systems of work and effective usage of PPE
  • Experience with Small tools such as strimmers and hedge cutters

Your new role

You will be tasked with ensuring best practise operations and maintenance activities are carried out, helping to raise the quality of life for those working and living or visiting London. You will be responsible for implementing changes to ensure efficiencies, working alongside leadership that gets out of the way and lets you get on with it. You will:


  • Manage operational health, safety and environmental matters and promote improvements
  • Develop, implement and improvement the Plans and Strategies associated with the highway maintenance service in London
  • Represent the Highway Service at meetings with Transport for London / London Borough Clients and key stakeholder groups such as local businesses, neighbouring Authorities and public inquiries etc.
  • Ensure compliance with the business and Authority’s policies and strategies
  • Ensure that Risk Assessments, Method Statements and COSHH Assessments are carried out in a timely way and that any improvement activities are fully resourced to deliver best value
  • Develop, promote and oversee recycling activities and carbon and water reduction targets
  • Assist with the formulating and reviewing of appropriate recruitment and training strategies
  • Work with the HSE team under CDM to ensure safe construction and maintenance.


About you

You will be a people person who is capable of engaging and motivating a team. You will help to bring value to the team by ticking off some of the below:


  • Experience of highways maintenance or a related field, ideally in a team leadership / management role
  • Good working knowledge of highway asset management systems
  • Good understanding of sustainability and carbon impacts of highway service
  • Competence in writing procedures and setting up systems which reflect and promote the best practices of customer care, quality, value for money, continuous improvement, and equality of opportunity in service delivery.

Job Description

We are currently partnering a Local Authority in Oxfordshire, in their recruitment for a Planning & Highways Lawyer on a locum basis for an initial 3-months.


They are able to consider candidates on a remote basis, but any attendance will be advantageous.


The successful candidate must hold a current practising certificate.


The team have capacity for full-time hours, but part-time applicants will also be considered. The rate is negotiable subject to PQE, but ideally will be between £50 - £60 p/hour via an Umbrella company.


Duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Handling a mixed caseload of Planning and Highways matters, including attending meetings and advising Council Officers and Members in regards to legal issues, governance and procedure
  • Drafting and advising s.106 agreements, CIL, certificates of lawful use and advising on other planning related matters
  • Advising on, drafting and completing highways agreements, including deeds of dedication and footpath orders


Working hours:

  • Open to both part-time and full-time applicants
  • 22 - 37 hours per week
  • No out-of-hours attendance required
