As part of continued growth and expansion, we’re now looking to recruit a Portfolio Manager to join our Alternatives function and lead the development and implementation of a new Local Investment capability. This is a new and innovative development that is expected to have a material positive impact on new investment across local and regional areas of the UK, of significant importance to our underlying LGPS Partner Funds.


Portfolio Manager – Private Markets – Local Investment Fund

Working jointly alongside the UK Opportunities Portfolio Manager, we are looking for a new PM to lead the development of our local investment programme. The role will require engagement with our underlying Partner Funds to understand their local investment ambitions, as well as ongoing engagement with relevant regional and mayoral authorities to identify investment opportunities aligned with those ambitions. Asset classes will be driven by Partner Funds but could include regional Private Equity, Venture Capital, Direct Lending, Housing, and Development Lending. In addition, the Portfolio Manager will also work closely with the UK Opportunities PM on the portfolio construction, due diligence and monitoring of investments comprised within the UK Opportunities fund.


We are interested in hearing from established Portfolio Managers with experience of investing across a range of alternatives asset classes via private market fund structures (and co-investments). A strong knowledge of the UK market and regionally focused managers is desirable.


Knowledge of strategies focussed on ‘additionality’, which deliver financial returns whilst contributing to the growth of the UK or regional economy would also be extremely valuable. You will be responsible for the development and delivery of our local investment capability in accordance with the Border to Coast Investment Policy, investment process, procedures and relevant legal or regulatory documentation.


Educated to Degree level and with a suitable investment management qualification, you will have relevant experience of investing into Private Market funds and ideally into local investment strategies. Day to day, leading due diligence, including reviewing investment, operational and ESG factors. You will also demonstrate clear investment decision making and portfolio and risk management experience.


With a keen interest in and understanding of investment markets, long-term investment, and a commitment to responsible investment and sustainability, you will have experience of using investment management software, problem solving and decision-making capability and strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.


Border to Coast

Border to Coast is the largest LGPS (Local Government Pension Scheme) pool in the UK. It is owned by 11 Local Government Pension Schemes (‘Partner Funds’). The Partner Funds represent 3,000 employers and over 1.1 million members.

The Fund Management Team

Low Carbon is looking to appoint an Associate Intern within the Fund Management team who will report directly to an Investment Manager, and support the wider team. Low Carbon Investment Management is an FCA accredited manager that makes investments into late-stage renewables assets on behalf of third parties. LCIM is currently raising its first fund – Low Carbon Renewables Fund (“LCRF”) – with a target size €500m, first close targeted in 1H 2024 and over 1GW of seed assets secured.

Key Responsibilities

Support the execution of new investment transactions (Primary responsibilities)

  • Develop an understanding of the investment criteria of LCIM fund mandates
  • Lead country and renewable technology sector research activities and feed this into MD, ID and IM investment sourcing activities
  • Support IMs, IDs and MDs in the analysis and evaluation of new investment opportunities, including financial analysis, risk and counterparty analysis, relevant industry research:
    • Build and modify financial models for investment opportunities, including complex operational, investment structuring and debt financing structures
    • Prepare investment committee papers supporting new investments, new projects or other material investment decisions
    • Project manage due diligence workstreams, assist IMs and IDs to critically review the work of third-party advisors
    • Contribute to the review of transaction documentation and transaction funding
  • Contribute to the sourcing of new investment opportunities

Monitor the performance of portfolio investments (secondary responsibilities)

  • Lead the preparation of internal and investor reporting and valuation for portfolio investments, including ownership of investment model
  • Collect and review financial and other information from portfolio companies in order to monitor progress
  • Liaise with portfolio companies on ongoing corporate actions, collection of fees and dividends, redemptions etc.
