Job Description
Matrix are looking for keen and enthusiastic 2nd Officers and 3rd officers to work on our managed RORO passenger ferries in the Irish Sea and Cross Channel. Positions have opened up due to internal promotions.
Pervious ferry experience would be an asset but not essential for this role.
We currently offer a competitive salary, paid travel and travel days, full pay whilst on courses, a day rate so extra days are paid and good promotion prospects. Current contracts are 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. There is a seniority scheme and plenty of opportunity for promotion.
Essential Certification:
- STCW Elementary First Aid
- STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
- STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
- STCW Personal Survival Techniques

Are you ready to play a vital role in ensuring safety and compliance? As a Fire Safety Officer, you will be the guardian of our fire and safety equipment, ensuring everything is in top-notch condition and regularly monitored. Your keen eye for detail will help you compile reports on any faults related to our fire alarm system.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting weekly fire alarm tests and visual inspections of fire extinguishers across all venues.
- Performing regular fire safety checks and completing monthly reports to enforce fire safety regulations.
- Maintaining the Fire Safety portal and Logbook to ensure compliance with our Fire Policy.
- Providing Fire Warden training to team members, enhancing their understanding of fire safety.
- Collaborating with external contractors and liaising with the Fire & Rescue Service to ensure compliance with fire regulations.
- Investigating fire incidents and providing guidance to prevent future occurrences.
- Contributing to new builds and modifications by advising on fire safety requirements.
- Conducting Fire Risk Assessments and ensuring timely resolution of any issues raised.

- IT literate with strong attention to detail.
- A great communicator and negotiator, able to work well in a team and make independent decisions.

- Professional and discreet when handling confidential information.
- Self-motivated with a proactive, problem-solving mindset.
To thrive in this role, you should ideally have:
- The NEBOSH Fire Certificate (if you don’t have it, you’ll need to complete it within your first year).
- Experience in Fire Risk Assessment.
- A training qualification (preferred but not essential; training can be provided).
You must also be prepared to undertake the Level 3 Award in Education and Training.
