Chemisty Laboratory based on site at a large hospital requires diligent and efficient Medical Laboratory Assistants to provide general support to the busy Sample Reception.
Duties will include:
- Receipt, identify and prepare all samples and request forms
- Handle large volume of incoming samples
- Identify and prepare - maintaining accurate log via the specimen tracker system
- Assisting with incoming department queries via phone, email, face to face in a timely and professional manner
- Other duties assigned by the department
The successful candidate must have had proven work experience within a UK pathology laboratory, ideally a Biomedical Graduate. Experience of working on Winpath would be an advantageous.
You will also need to be flexible, highly motivated, an effective team player, methodical and have excellent communication skills.

Join our Cellular Pathology team at Unilabs, where you'll play a key role in supporting the delivery of a high-quality, professional laboratory service. We're looking for a flexible and efficient individual to assist our histology staff and contribute to the smooth, day-to-day running of the lab.
Key Result AreasIn this role, you will be tasked with a variety of key responsibilities that are crucial for the success of our team and the overall organization. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- To assist the MTO, BMS and Senior BMS dissection team with making up solutions and completing logs where required;
- To ensure that all samples are archived regularly and accurately;
- To assist in specimen reception routine duties as and when required on a rota basis: booking in and ensuring samples are received and triaged according to their criteria and contractual obligations;
- To carry out reagent change and daily maintenance of processors and embedding machines;
- Preparation of department transport bags/boxes for delivery and assist/liaise with the couriers;
- Partake in the rota for sample discard;
- Assisting Pathologist at dissection when required;
- To develop and improve professional expertise and specialist skills;
- To undertake any training courses as considered necessary;
- To maintain the relevant dissection laboratory equipment;
- To be aware of, and always comply with Health and Safety regulations and safe laboratory procedures;
- To participate in the annual staff appraisals.
Participate in the surgical dissection of diagnostic Category A Histology specimens which will encompass the following:
- Receive samples in specimen reception and triage them accordingly for booking in;
- Booking in samples at specimen reception;
- Logging any discrepancies and ensuring they are followed up accordingly;
- Assist MTO, BMS.
The post holder should also:
- Be aware of knowledge and self-limitations, and have a low threshold for seeking advice;
- Keep adequate records of specimens dissected, including error logs and topical reflective practices.
Requirements
- GCSE’s including English, Math and Science;
- BSc (hons) in Biomedical Science (desirable);
- HCPC registration (desirable);
- Previous laboratory experience (experience in a large busy pathology laboratory - desired);
- Good IT skills and working knowledge of Microsoft;
- Must develop and improve your scientific expertise, which may be via CPD within an appraisal programme. Maintain a portfolio of relevant developments achieved;
- To participate in the organisation of scientific teaching programmes;
- Undertake suitable training and development programmes to successfully acquire core competencies and thereafter maintain the required standards of competence when undertaking duties;
- Good communication skills;
- Able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
- Ability to remain GDPR compliant.

To be successful in this role, you would need a chemistry/life science degree, and recent experience with HPLC or GC outside of university (e.g work placement). Experience or knowledge working to GMP is highly desirable.

Job Purpose
To carry out analytical checks on both syrups & finished products ensuring product quality. Carry out other service tasks which ensure the efficient operation of the production department.
Principal Responsibilities
* Collect samples of product from Manufacturing
* Carry out standardised analytical tests on batches, charge up samples, finished product, stock holds & complaint samples. Interpret results, understanding brix (sugar) and pH levels & communicate to production or appropriate personnel.
* Carry out standardised analytical tests of raw materials including mineral water and comminute
* Set up of HPLC instrumentation
* Using standardised calculations determine, recommend & recheck material adjustments for the mixing department
* Use the Manufacturing Execution System to release syrup batches to production
* Taste testing of all finished goods batches, identifying issues where appropriate
* Follow standardised procedures to determine acid and brix levels in customer complaints and report on findings.
* Check packaging and coding against specifications using SAP system, communicate results & ensure extra checks are carried out if failures have been determined. Identify product to be held if out of specification.
* Organise storage of retained samples & ensure housekeeping in both Laboratory & keeper room is maintained to a high standard.
* Participation in external proficiency checks as required by the Quality Assurance Supervisor.
* Undertake basic microbiology testing. Including plate pouring and incubation.
* Maintain accurate records, report sheets & summary sheets as per Labcred requirements.
General Responsibilities
* Understand and take an active role in lean manufacturing work practices including 5S, AM and problem solving (including root cause analysis), to drive continuous improvement activity throughout the site
