As part of this, the director has hired a new Head of Legal focused on standards, performance, continuous improvement and organisational resilience, and is now looking to expand further by appointing an enthusiastic Senior Lawyer with a range of experience.
Your new role
Southend City Council are looking to appoint a permanent, full-time Senior Lawyer.As a lawyer within the Council's well-respected Legal Services team, you will be handling a technical legal caseload of cases of medium complexity, ensuring the provision of timely, accurate, and high-quality advice. You will work closely with colleagues, to deliver high standards of service in adult social care law. The role will include, but is not limited to, the following:
- Providing legal advice on Care Act, Mental Capacity Act and Mental Health Act matters, issues relating to continuing health care and S117 and ordinary residence disputes
- Advising in respect of and having conduct of litigation in relation to adult social care matters, including applications relating to community DOLs, S21A challenges, S16 welfare proceedings, and displacement of nearest relative applications and judicial reviews.
- Addressing issues related to no recourse to public funds, safeguarding, financial matters, information governance and inquests.
- Work with the Court of Protection team which, for example, makes applications for finance and property deputy ships and authority to sign or surrender tenancies.
Within this position, hybrid working opportunities are available. However, you are required to be on-site at the Civic Centre a minimum of 2 days a week.
What you'll need to succeed
- Qualified Solicitor/Barrister/Legal Executive with a current England & Wales practising certificate.
- 0-3 years post-qualification experience with some experience in the above areas.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Proven experience in the public sector, ideally local government.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage complex workloads.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and training.

Your new role

**Team/Role Overview**
Citi's Legal Department in Belfast is a team of approximately 120 staff, covering a range of products and services across Citi's Europe, UK, Middle East and Africa Cluster. The Belfast Legal Department provides a range of services, support and advice to many business areas; incorporating transaction negotiation, master agreement negotiation, and oversight of compliance and regulatory requirements. The role will involve an active engagement with the business, principally out of Belfast, but there will also be daily interaction with the rest of the cluster. The Custody Legal Counsel is a key role in the Belfast Investor Services Legal team, working closely with the product desks across Europe, UK, Middle East and Africa and acting as an important partner to provide advice and assistance at all stages of the product lifecycle.
**What you'll do**
Advise the Custody business, on all aspects of legal risk as it pertains to their business - with respect to (i) negotiations with key platinum clients; (ii) risk issues which materialize in the business; and (iii) regulatory change implementation and associated issues relating to key regulations relevant to the Custody business.
+ Review and negotiate a wide variety of custody legal documentation with internal and external customers to reach agreement on the contents of same, through telephonic or electronic negotiation, and in line with the Investor Services negotiation guidelines as applicable
+ Support the provision of legal guidance and expertise to the Custody Services business lines throughout Europe, UK, Middle East and Africa on relevant Custody product and product development matters including general advice and negotiation and drafting of transaction documentation, contracts and development of relevant templates.
+ Maintain accurate status reports on negotiation developments within the team and exercise best practice in documentation management, negotiation and execution
+ Understand the various legal and regulatory requirements of the Custody business and providing legal support in respect of same
+ Manage day-to-day legal activities, serving as a subject matter expert in area of responsibility and provide advisory services to business partners
+ Build relationships with various internal stakeholders such as local legal counsels, product, risk, relationship managers and implementation contacts. Partnering with the said internal stakeholders to assess and implement new regulatory requirements, new initiatives/product offerings including assistance with the product approval process .
+ Coordinate the external counsel and providing assistance in budgeting.
**What we'll need from you**
+ Experience working in a fast-paced corporate legal department, law firm, financial services or related industry.
+ Proven analytical and organizational skills, exceptional attention to detail and high levels of accuracy.
+ Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills, as well as has the ability to seek and understand instructions from the relevant business stakeholder.
+ Comprehensive knowledge of applicable laws and practices relevant to the product areas and banking/ financial services industry.
+ Confidence and agility in challenging times, and can effectively manage a busy workload comprising work from different financial product areas.

What the role involves:
The "Big AI" program within our AI Group tackles strategic, complex, and often ambiguous problems that are top-of-mind for our executive leadership. These initiatives involve multi-phase or long-term projects, significant data and computational resources, and aim to shape the future direction of IOG strategies and products.
As a Senior AI Specialist focusing on Big AI, you will be instrumental in designing and implementing custom AI solutions to address these critical business challenges. You will work with local and external models, engage in sophisticated prompt optimization, workflow and AI agent design, and help formalize business workflows for AI to understand, reason about, and optimize. This role requires a blend of deep technical expertise, strategic thinking, and the ability to translate complex business processes or tasks into effective AI agent architectures/workflows. Collaboration with UI/UX teams or conceptualizing user interactions for AI tools may be involved to ensure the usability of developed solutions.
Strategic Problem Framing & Stakeholder Engagement

Who you are:
- Master’s degree or PhD in a quantitative or technical field (e.g., Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering), or equivalent practical experience.
- 10+ years of hands-on experience in applied data science, AI research, or machine learning, with a portfolio of projects demonstrating impact on strategic decision-making or complex problem-solving.
- Strong experience with Large Language Models (LLMs), including prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and understanding their capabilities and limitations.
- Experience with LLM deployment, monitoring, and quality assurance methodologies (e.g., evaluation frameworks, LLM-as-judge, red teaming, A/B testing for LLM applications).
