Job Description
Liberty is famed for its original curation, directional design and celebration of craftsmanship. In the spirit of our founder, Arthur Lasenby Liberty, we remain unapologetically eccentric and committed to bringing good design to all.
To this day, a voyage of discovery awaits on the good ship Liberty in its iconic Regent Street store, with history hidden amongst six floors of cutting-edge design, unexpected edits and beautiful wares from the world's greatest craftspeople.
The building is a heritage listed London icon and today, Liberty is famed for its directional design, cultural collaborations and inspiring curation.
Liberty’s dedicated in-house design studio is still at the core of all that we do, hand painting and creating our beautiful prints, and reworking finds from the 55,000-strong archive.
Position Overview – Legal Counsel
An opportunity now exists for a commercial lawyer to join the Liberty legal team. In this role, you will provide legal advice and support for the Liberty business across a wide range of legal and commercial matters. You will work with the General Counsel in implementing legal and strategic priorities for Liberty as well as having responsibility for progressing your own matters and projects.
Responsibilities
You will review, draft and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements including retail and concession agreements, services agreements and licensing agreements. You will also provide support on the protection and commercialisation of IP as well as data privacy, marketing, tech and digital matters.
Business Partnering
You will have the opportunity to work directly with the business and build effective and constructive relationships across all divisions of Liberty, working collaboratively to deliver on business priorities. You will also be involved with the company’s commitment to CSR and assist in managing this from a legal perspective.
About You
This is a truly iconic business with a wealth of history and a commitment to design, creativity and craftsmanship. The opportunity will best suit a commercially focussed lawyer with pragmatic and hands on commercial legal experience who will appreciate these values and who can contribute to the aspirations of the brand and what it offers its global customer base.
Commercial legal experience in a retail or consumer context is ideal, with any IP experience being certainly useful but not essential. The ability to handle a varied workload as well as work both as part of a team and independently is key. As a true business partner, strong communication skills are also important, as is a flexible and positive attitude to work. Good drafting and negotiation skills will also be critical.
Minimum Qualifications
- Qualified solicitor in England & Wales or a Commonwealth country;
- Minimum of 1 years’ post-qualification experience;
- Solid academic background;
- Some experience of working in an in-house legal environment;
- Exposure to a range of commercial legal work.
