Senior Geotechnical Engineer - London Underground Projects

Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage geotechnical investigations, including desk studies, site reconnaissance, and ground investigation supervision.
- Interpret ground investigation data and develop ground models.
- Undertake detailed geotechnical design for foundations, basements, retaining walls, tunnels, and shafts.
- Prepare geotechnical design reports, calculations, and specifications in accordance with relevant codes and standards (e.g., Eurocode 7).
- Provide expert geotechnical advice and input to project teams, clients, and contractors.
- Oversee and contribute to the construction phase of projects, offering site support and resolving geotechnical issues.
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and resources for geotechnical components.
- Mentor and guide junior geotechnical engineers.
- Conduct technical reviews and quality assurance of geotechnical deliverables.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, statutory undertakers, and other stakeholders.
- MSc or MEng in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant postgraduate experience in geotechnical engineering, with a strong emphasis on underground infrastructure and urban development.
- Proven experience working on major infrastructure projects, ideally within London.
- In-depth knowledge of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and engineering geology.
- Proficiency in geotechnical design software (e.g., Plaxis 2D/3D, Wallap, SLOPE/W).
- Experience with field investigation techniques and equipment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong report writing capabilities.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or equivalent is highly desirable.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a project team.
- Willingness to travel to site locations as required.

You will be working from various London Underground Depots fixing advertisements within the train carriages, full training will be given. You will need to be flexible and available to attend inductions at depots across the whole of the London Underground Network.
Requirements:
- Full UK Drivers Licence
- Sentinel with ICI and LU Endorsement
- Passport to Depot
- Depot Track Awareness
Company Vehicle will be supplied, once training has been completed. Please note company van is of Vauxhall Movano size, so will need to ensure you are comfortable and able to drive a large van and you need to be able to have somewhere to park it at home.

To sustain the growth of our UK business, we are looking for a Head of Discipline for our Tunnel, Civil and Underground Engineering team. Working in our London office, you will be responsible for managing a team of civil and structural engineers as part of our UK&I Tunnel, Civil and Underground Engineering discipline management team. Staff from the discipline are involved designing solutions for a range of tunnel and below ground structures across multiple sectors, including water, rail, utilities, highways and energy.
Your key responsibilities as Head of Discipline will be:
Lead a team of civil and structural engineers as part of our Tunnel, Civil and Underground Engineering discipline. You will have responsibility for their technical and professional development outside of their project work, and for performance management.
Support the UK&I Head of Discipline in aligning the capability and capacity of your office team with the current and future needs of the wider discipline team, and in ensuring the effective utilisation of their time and skills day-to-day. Lead on the recruitment of new employees into your team as a hiring manager, in alignment with the discipline growth strategy.
Working closely with our linked team, permanently on the Lower Thames Crossing project, to align skills and integration.
Support our Discipline Leadership Team by communicating and role-modelling leadership messages and encouraging a high-performance, diverse and inclusive culture.
As an experienced tunnel, civil or structural engineer yourself, you will also have responsibilities to provide:
Technical leadership across a range of current projects
Technical custodianship of heavy civil engineering competencies, developing and ensuring consistent application of best practice across projects and directing on technical innovations
Mentoring and development of engineering staff in your areas, including developing and delivering training, undertaking knowledge-sharing activities and supporting succession planning
Promote our position as an established name within your area through involvement in relevant industry bodies, technical publication, and facilitating the same in others
Technical approval of designs, check or assessment deliverables on your projects in accordance with internal management systems
Support in the pursuit of relevant business development opportunities and input into bids and tenders as required
Requirements
Achieved Chartered Engineer status, with CEng (or equivalent), working towards or having also achieved Fellowship of a professional body.
A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or MSc in either Civil Engineering (with significant tunnel or structural experience), or an equivalent relevant degree.
Experience in a similar role with technical, commercial, business development and line management responsibilities.
Expertise in a design environment working on major or complex heavy civils projects in the UK & Ireland or internationally at a senior/leadership level
Knowledge of the application of engineering standards.
High level knowledge of and experience in the use of industrial sector codes for highways, rail, energy, and water sectors.
A good understanding of construction and site processes, particularly around one or more of the following: shaft and tunnel construction; micro-tunnelling; water / wastewater treatment; historic structures / asset management; foundations for a wide range of structures; rail structures.
Significant experience guiding project teams and handling the technical delivery of projects, either as client's or contractor's designer
Experience as an effective people leader, able to communicate effectively, engage and lead a team of civil, structural and tunnel engineers, supporting their performance and professional development.
