Job Summary:
I am working with a well-established SME in Manchester in the Defence sector who are seeking an experienced Managing Director to join their team on a permanent basis. Reporting directly to the CEO, this role is ideal for a candidate who is experienced in business turnaround, leading the strategic and operational direction of the company, improvement of financial performance, driving growth and ensuring strong relationships with customers within the defence sector.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the business through a strategic and operational transformation to restore profitability and long-term sustainability.
- Develop and execute a turnaround strategy aligned with board objectives, delivering measurable performance improvements.
- Strengthen the company's presence and reputation within the UK defence marketplace, building trusted relationships with MoD, DE&S, and key industry partners.
- Oversee all business operations, ensuring compliance with defence industry regulations and contractual obligations.
- Provide strong leadership across all departments, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Represent the company with key clients, stakeholders, and at high-level defence and industry events.
- Drive new business development, leveraging existing relationships and market knowledge to secure strategic contracts and partnerships.

Requirements and Qualifications:
- Significant senior leadership experience (Managing Director, CEO, or equivalent), ideally in an SME or mid-sized defence organisation
- In-depth knowledge of the UK defence industry, including procurement processes, regulatory requirements, and key stakeholders - knowledge of the defence sector is an essential requirement for this role
- Proven experience leading a successful business turnaround - restoring profitability, restructuring operations, or re-aligning strategy
- Strong commercial acumen, with a track record of securing and managing complex defence contracts
- Experience managing stakeholder relationships across government, primes, and industry bodies
- Demonstrated ability to lead organisational change and inspire high-performance teams
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and decision-making skills
- Degree-level education in business, engineering, defence studies, or a related field; MBA or similar qualification is advantageous
- Must be eligible to obtain UK security clearance
- Detail orientated, able to investigate and look at a business from ground level up

We are currently working with a world class organisation who specialise in the distribution of heating solutions who are making significant investment in their business to drive growth and as such are looking to recruit a Managing Director. The main responsibilities of this role will be to develop and execute a strategic road map for sales, targeting market penetration and growth working closely with the customer and supplier base, while managing full P&L to meet the corporate objectives and plans.

- Liaise with customers to establish market trends that will enable a targeted approach to business growth through effective partnerships.
- Work closely with the parent company and Sales Team to develop new business and new market penetration, whilst providing guidance within the sales strategy and process.
- Set company wide KPI’s and plans to gauge performance, implementing corrective actions or improvements across the business to address concerns that will impact profitability.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance when dealing with strategic customers to advise on products and their applications to meet customers’ needs and requirements.
- Manage all P&L accounts, and the day-to-day administrative requirement of the business reporting back to the Group CEO to deliver year on year growth to meet the corporate objectives and targets.
As Managing Director, you will ideally have:
- A degree level qualification with an Engineering Bias
- A track record in identifying new market sectors, product lines and sales opportunities within current and new industries to maximise business opportunities.
- Expertise in business development and sales being able to create and implement strategic plans to delivery against challenging sales targets.
- Proven experience of successfully negotiating and managing technical distributors dealing with all P&L to include areas such as budget and forecast management, weekly and monthly reporting, balance sheets, risk assessment, audits and operational matters whilst ensuring effective management, development, mentoring and EHS requirements of the existing team.
- The ability to identify new customers and offer services via both the existing sales team and selective distribution channels that will drive yet more growth in the company’s service offerings.
- Experience of undertaking business in a high quality, engineering biased customer base, being technically adept at discussing product applications and requirements with key stakeholders.
- A strong commercial and financial awareness, being data rationale, able to set effective targets that are achievable to meet corporate goals and objectives.
