Serco Maritime have an exciting opening for a Marine Engineering Officer to join the team and serve aboard an RFA vessel in support of an exciting project. The purpose of the role is to manage the organisation and activities of the Marine Engineering Department, as directed by the Chief Engineer.

As owners and operators of specialist vessels, from harbour workboats to oceangoing support vessels, we provide world class integrated maritime services both in the UK and abroad. Our vessels provide a range of support, which include for example: dive support, military training, submarine rescue exercises, target/test equipment deployment/recovery and passenger transfers.
As part of this role you'll
- Delegate tasks and assign duties to members of the Marine Engineering Department.
- Inform the Chief Engineer of any engineering defects which affect the operational capability of the vessel.
- Be responsible for the effectiveness, welfare, and discipline of departmental personnel
- Be responsible for the Marine Engineering Department continuous training, ensuring that statutory and RFA requirements are achieved within the given timescales.
- When no CTO borne, to assume the training responsibilities of that function for Cadets of the Marine Engineering specialisation.
- To assist the Executive Officer in planning and organising whole ship training serials.
- To be conversant with, and implement, Health and Safety at Work Regulations and the Code of Safe Working Practices in so far as they apply to the Marine Engineering Department.
- To apply the international standard for the safe management and operation of ship's and for pollution prevention (ISM) and implement the RFA Regulations for Royal Fleet Auxiliaries.
- To act as First or Second Appraisal Officer for members of the Marine Engineering Department as appropriate.
- To ensure that any misconduct is dealt with promptly and in accordance with the procedures laid down in PRGs.
- To manage the proper operation, maintenance and preservation of all machinery, equipment and areas of the ship which are the responsibility of the Marine Engineering Department.
- To manage all marine engineering evolutions, ensuring that they are carried out in accordance with statutory regulations and RFA Policy.
- To ensure the proper operation and maintenance of all deck machinery, lift machinery, hoists, replenishment machinery, mechanical handling equipment, ship's boat engines and their associated systems.
- To ensure routine testing, maintenance and inspection of ships fixed firefighting and safety equipment is carried out.
- To be responsible for preparing and advising the Maintenance Manager on Marine Engineering Department Alterations and Additions (A&As).
- To manage the Engine room Watch Keeping and PMS (UMS) requirements to meet RFA and MCA regulations to ensure the safe and efficient operation and upkeep of machinery affecting the safety of the ship.
- To ensure the proper operation and maintenance of permanent on-board aviation technical facilities and associated systems, except for communications systems.

As a Marine Engineering Training Instructor, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You will be providing specialist engineering and nuclear expertise to the training design process. You will also have the opportunity to support the development of the recently established Babcock Skills business, which provides a wide range of engineering training courses.
Day to day you'll collaborate with our Astute-class Training Service team to help train the current and next generation of Submarine Service engineering professionals, as well as:
- Deliver classroom and simulator based training to Nuclear Propulsion Plant Operators and Marine Engineering Equipment Maintainers
- Collaborating with the training design team to update the courseware based on technical changes and identifying the impact of those changes
- Providing SME support to evaluate technical data and notifications of change on existing Marine Engineering and Nuclear Steam Raising Plant courseware
- Delivering additional training (Confined Space, Working at Height, etc.) to students outside the ACTS program, ensuring it meets prescribed quality and cost standards

Essential experience of the Training Instructor

We're seeking a Commissioning Engineer to install, commission, and service our specialist systems like CAPAC® and Chloropac® across customer sites in the UK and globally.
What You'll Be Doing
- Install & Commission : Lead the installation and commissioning of Xylem's marine corrosion prevention and biofouling control systems on vessels, offshore platforms, and industrial sites.
- Service & Maintain : Carry out preventative maintenance and repairs, conduct on-site inspections, and perform in-depth fault finding and root cause analysis.
- Technical Support : Act as a trusted technical advisor for customers, supporting existing installations and identifying opportunities for system upgrades and improvements.
- Be the Expert on Site : Supervise third-party contractors, ensure quality control, and deliver hands-on training to customer teams.
- Own the Documentation : Complete all service, commissioning and compliance paperwork to the highest standard and within agreed timelines.
- Safety First : Uphold safety procedures at all times - both onshore and offshore - leaving every site safe and fully operational.
What We're Looking For
We're ideally looking for a time-served engineer from the marine, offshore, or heavy industrial sector with strong electrical and PLC experience .
Essential:
- Offshore certification (or willingness to obtain: BOSIET , Offshore Medical)
- PLC skills (Siemens and/or Allen Bradley)
- Electrical & mechanical fault-finding (bias towards electrical)
- Strong communication and report writing skills (MS Office proficiency)
- Compex Foundation course (or willingness to complete)
Nice to Have:
- Experience working with chemical dosing or cathodic protection systems
- Supervisory experience managing third-party contractors
- Familiarity with offshore HSE procedures
Location & Travel
While our base is in Caldicot , we know the best engineers don't all live in one place. That's why we're open to candidates based anywhere in the UK , provided you're flexible to travel to customer sites both across the UK and offshore as needed.
