Medical Writer – Medical Communications

Position: Medical Writer (medical affairs)

Location: London (2 days in the office)

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a range of projects across the full spectrum of medical communications activities, including congress activities, advisory boards, symposia, training materials, websites, and digital apps. Some of the key therapy areas include oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular and obesity.

Role & Responsibilities:

• Provide high-level medical writing support within accounts, achieving writing excellence across therapy areas and the communication mix and target audiences
• Review written scientific documents for writing style, strategy, content accuracy and fact/data checking, and provide constructive feedback, in addition to ensuring scientific accuracy
• Act as the Technical Lead on designated client projects
• Apply expertise and broad experience of medical communications to the development of strategic communications programmes across accounts
• Ensure all assigned projects are delivered to the highest possible editorial and scientific standards, to deadline and within budget
• Develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients and external thought leaders
• Manage and monitor own workload and that of junior writers assigned to projects. Monitor project budgets. Anticipate and provide solutions to budget and/or resource needs or limitations. Identify where new processes may be required and support their development
• Keep up to date with industry codes of practice/legislation and external issues or events that may affect existing accounts
• Monitor project costs against agreed budgets and notify the Client Services team of any changes to specification at the earliest opportunity
• Contribute to the development of account plan forecasts in liaison with client services leads
• Research and contribute to the writing and review of new business proposals and pitch presentations, playing a central role from initial strategic brainstorming to proposal delivery
• Proactively identify possible new business opportunities within assigned accounts

Requirements:

• Degree (science, preferably life science); PhD or MSc (desirable)
• Scientific knowledge and understanding
• Proficiency in delivering high-quality written work
• Presentation skills
• Able to attend international events
• High level of drive, motivation, and initiative
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Awareness of industry guidelines and best practice and their application
• 2+ years of experience working in Medical Communications (agency)

This is a high-impact, senior leadership opportunity for an experienced clinician with a strong background in healthcare insurance operations.

About the Role

This newly created position sits within AXA Health’s Commercial team and is responsible for leading internal medical operations. You’ll oversee the Medical Policy and Medical Underwriting teams, driving performance across medical, healthcare, and operational domains.

You’ll be instrumental in shaping AXA Health’s strategic direction, building a team that sets the benchmark for excellence in the UK. This hybrid role requires attendance at AXA’s Tunbridge Wells office, client sites, or industry events at least two days per week (moving to three days/week by late 2025).

Key Responsibilities

• Medical Policy Development: Design and optimise policies for healthcare funding, ensuring regulatory alignment.
• Operational Efficiency: Monitor and improve policy effectiveness and customer experience.
• Claims Support: Provide expert guidance to claims teams across modalities and technologies.
• Annual & Bi-Annual Reviews: Lead reviews of policy terms and guidance to manage indemnity risk and ensure clarity.
• Clinical Risk Management: Chair the Clinical Risk Committee and oversee AXA Health’s Clinical Risk Register.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Act as the primary contact for healthcare providers regarding treatment eligibility.
• Medical Underwriting Leadership: Ensure underwriting practices are efficient, compliant, and risk-aligned.
• Training & Development: Promote continuous improvement through staff training and workshops.

Candidate Profile

• Medical qualification with substantial clinical experience.
• Postgraduate qualification or 3+ years in a similar leadership role.
• 10+ years of relevant experience, including clinical governance and risk management.
• Proven success in leading strategic initiatives in complex environments.
• Strong analytical skills and proficiency in healthcare data tools.
• Deep understanding of healthcare regulatory and compliance frameworks.
• People and resource management expertise.

Eligibility: Candidates must be authorised to work in the UK. This role is classified under the Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) and subject to periodic background screening.
