Join our Cellular Pathology team at Unilabs, where you'll play a key role in supporting the delivery of a high-quality, professional laboratory service. We're looking for a flexible and efficient individual to assist our histology staff and contribute to the smooth, day-to-day running of the lab.
Key Result AreasIn this role, you will be tasked with a variety of key responsibilities that are crucial for the success of our team and the overall organization. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- To assist the MTO, BMS and Senior BMS dissection team with making up solutions and completing logs where required;
- To ensure that all samples are archived regularly and accurately;
- To assist in specimen reception routine duties as and when required on a rota basis: booking in and ensuring samples are received and triaged according to their criteria and contractual obligations;
- To carry out reagent change and daily maintenance of processors and embedding machines;
- Preparation of department transport bags/boxes for delivery and assist/liaise with the couriers;
- Partake in the rota for sample discard;
- Assisting Pathologist at dissection when required;
- To develop and improve professional expertise and specialist skills;
- To undertake any training courses as considered necessary;
- To maintain the relevant dissection laboratory equipment;
- To be aware of, and always comply with Health and Safety regulations and safe laboratory procedures;
- To participate in the annual staff appraisals.
Participate in the surgical dissection of diagnostic Category A Histology specimens which will encompass the following:
- Receive samples in specimen reception and triage them accordingly for booking in;
- Booking in samples at specimen reception;
- Logging any discrepancies and ensuring they are followed up accordingly;
- Assist MTO, BMS.
The post holder should also:
- Be aware of knowledge and self-limitations, and have a low threshold for seeking advice;
- Keep adequate records of specimens dissected, including error logs and topical reflective practices.
Requirements
- GCSE’s including English, Math and Science;
- BSc (hons) in Biomedical Science (desirable);
- HCPC registration (desirable);
- Previous laboratory experience (experience in a large busy pathology laboratory - desired);
- Good IT skills and working knowledge of Microsoft;
- Must develop and improve your scientific expertise, which may be via CPD within an appraisal programme. Maintain a portfolio of relevant developments achieved;
- To participate in the organisation of scientific teaching programmes;
- Undertake suitable training and development programmes to successfully acquire core competencies and thereafter maintain the required standards of competence when undertaking duties;
- Good communication skills;
- Able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team;

Manpower is currently seeking an interim Machine Dishwash Lab Technician, to work with our global FMCG client Unilever, renowned for brands such as Dove, Sure, Persil, and Simple, and become an integral part of their fast-paced FMCG environment.
The position is based at our client's scientific Research & Development facility in Port Sunlight Village, Wirral easily accessible by train and car. This is a full-time temporary role to run until 27th March 2026 (with a possibility of extension), requiring 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Compensation for this role is competitive, paying up to 26,325 per annum, pro rata, depending upon experience.
The role currently offers a mix of remote and onsite working, subject to adjustment based on business requirements.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Background
The Machine dishwash (MDW) category operate a large laboratory where several internal tests are carried out. These tests are aimed at measuring the technical performance of our products in a number of areas. Because testing involves many operational activities, we need a team that can run the operation of the machines, preparation of the samples, and occasionally run simple experiments.
Role description:
The role is laboratory based, helping in the running of everyday experiments. There is some flexibility as to how the hours are achieved, but it is preferable that the person is in every day with a standard full day working hours from 8am - 4pm. The main activities are as follows:
- MDW machine preparation - cleaning machines between studies so that they are ready for the next set of products or tests.
- MDW Article collection and preparation - this involves ensuring that plates/glasses, etc. are fit for use and are disposed if not.
- MDW test washes - turning on the dishwashers and opening doors at the end of cycle as appropriate, loading the machines with articles and adding the appropriate ballast soils.
- Re-wash of MDW articles for re-use, managing inventory, and stock control.
- Stain making for MDW studies.
- Simple MDW experiments where a demonstration of product benefits is required - this will be following a specific experimental process, usually with commercial products.
- Technical instrumental measurements on MDW articles (after appropriate training) for instance colour measurements, weight measurements or the digital imaging of washed articles.
- Use of LIMs for inventory tracking and article tracking through studies.
Skills required:
-Organisations skills - ability to switch between various tasks in the course of the day, and plan for the week
-Attention to detail - for instance the person needs to understand the need for the right mixes and soils to be used and ensure that machines are run with specific programmes and ensure that machines are loaded correctly
-Team work - this role is in a team of 3 and they all have to interact with many Unilever colleagues in the laboratory.
-IT Skills - Proficient in using Microsoft Office Applications
-Some understanding of chemistry is preferred.
