ABOUT THE ROLE
As part of our continuous growth and commitment to excellence, we are excited to introduce a brand-new role: Database Engineer. This pivotal position will operate within our technology department, which plays an essential role in ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning and development of our databases and pipelines.
You will be responsible for developing, optimising and managing these databases and ensuring a high-level of data quality and integrity. You will be defining the principles and processes that underpin data management while ensuring we maintain the highest standards for data management, security, privacy and compliance.
Office location: Haydock, St Helens, with flexibility for hybrid working.
WHAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
Design, develop, and optimise relational and non-relational databases across production and non-production environments.
Provisioning, configuring, patching, upgrading, and maintaining databases.
Automating the management of new and existing databases to ensure that processes are repeatable and scalable.
Create and manage database schemas, tables, stored procedures, indexes, and triggers.
Ensuring high availability of databases through clustering, replication, and other techniques.
Implement and maintain data pipelines and ETL processes for real-time and batch data ingestion.
Monitor database performance and proactively address issues related to tuning and optimization.
Ensure data security, privacy, integrity, and compliance with internal and external regulations.
Collaborate with third-party suppliers, software developers, data analysts, DevOps, and other stakeholders to meet project requirements.
Plan and implement database backups, restores, and disaster recovery strategies.
Taking an active role in supporting and in finding the root cause of operational issues and preventing recurrences.
Support the migration of databases and data systems between environments or platforms.
Develop detailed step-by-step guides to facilitate user understanding and implementation
Working with internal teams to document processes, procedures, and technical designs related to database management.
Taking an active role in collaborating across the various departments on database related topics and integrations.
Working with colleagues, internal customers and stakeholders on new features and capabilities.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Knowledge and experience of SQL
- Azure experience or certification
- Programming experience with Python, Ruby, R or at least one modern language
- Experience in operating and maintaining cloud infrastructure
- Experience with automation frameworks
- Understanding of database architecture, backup and recovery, and performance tuning
- Experience with database clustering and replication mechanisms.
- Experience of working with Cloud SQL
- Experience of using (and ideally developing) REST APIs
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, tools and DevOps practices in data engineering
- Experience in contributing to the architecture and design of new and existing systems
- Unix shell scripting or programming experience
- Strong conceptual skills, logical/analytical thinking & problem-solving skills
Desirable
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code, for automation and configuration management

Day to Day You'll Be:
- Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams-including developers, architects, and infrastructure engineers-to design and build modern, automated SQL Server environments.
- Applying your DBA expertise to engineer scalable, secure, and high-performing database platforms across on-prem and cloud.
- Building and continuously evolving CI/CD pipelines to automate database provisioning, configuration, and deployment using tools like Azure DevOps, Harness & Octopus Deploy.
- Driving consistency and resilience by establishing standards for high availability, disaster recovery, and fault tolerance.
- Identifying opportunities to eliminate manual processes through automation and infrastructure-as-code.

Essential Skills & Experience:
- Minimum 3 years' experience in a SQL Server DBA role, with hands-on exposure to versions 2017, 2019, and 2022.
- Experience with SQL Server migrations and upgrades, including planning and execution.
- Advanced use of T-SQL (stored procedures, SQL Agent Jobs, Deployment automation)
- Solid understanding of High Availability / Disaster Recovery technologies (Mirroring, Always On Availability Groups)
- Experience of Replication (especially transactional with centralised distribution)
- Proven experience of working with sensitive data in a secure manner, adhering to compliance and governance standards.
- Understanding of DevOps, Agile, Scrum, Kanban processes and methodologies
- Familiarity with either Octopus Deploy, Azure DevOps Server or other CI/CD tooling, for database deployment and environment provisioning.
- Familiarity with source control practices for database projects (e.g., dacpac deployments, Git workflows, branching, peer reviews, Pull requests).
- Basic level of PowerShell scripting.
- Excellent troubleshooting/fault resolution skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- A proactive approach to learning and adopting new technologies, with a mindset that bridges traditional DBA responsibilities and modern DevOps practices.

Within Future, Marketforce is the business unit focused on Circulation Newsstand in the UK and globally. With more than 30-years of experience, Marketforce leads the way in magazine distribution, global sales and marketing for a wide range of publishing partners which includes the Future portfolio. It is the #1 magazine distributor distributing over 200 million copies worldwide each year.
The Marketforce applications are bespoke and purpose built, on the foundations of Oracle (19c)/ ORACLE Forms (64bit) 12.2.1.3.0 and WebLogic 12.2.1.3.0 and Microsoft .NET technologies, using both waterfall and agile methodologies. The exception is our BI reporting tool, Business Objects XI (BOXI) , a proprietary SAP product. Developer tools and supporting products exist which are used to aid the ongoing developments of the applications.
Underpinning the applications is a suite of ORACLE distributed 19c databases, hosted on multiple ORACLE Data Appliance hardware.
This position requires the individual to become the ORACLE / ORACLE Forms technical expert for applications, BAU delivery, enhancements, developments and the primary contact for the business, each engineer also has to provide secondary cover for other applications based on their technology experience
What you'll be doing.
The Circulation Tech team of 10, consists of Project Managers, Business Analysts, ORACLE and Software Engineers. Additionally the team is the conduit for Infrastructure/ Networks based projects, working closely with an extended team to manage and deliver change through to Marketforce and its applications.
The team works closely with other partners:
- Future colleagues such as Finance (NetSuite) team, Editorial, Production, Tech & Engineering teams
- Marketforce partners such as 3rd party (non-Future) publishers, wholesalers, retailers, carriers, International distributors

- Experience in database development using Oracle PL/SQL
- SQL writing skills and data analysis using SQLPlus/ Toad/ SQL developer
