Role Overview
We are seeking a highly capable and safety-focused Site Manager to lead site delivery on a National Grid electricity transmission project , covering substation or overhead line works (132kV - 400kV). The successful candidate will be responsible for managing daily site operations, ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and to the required quality standards, with full compliance to National Grid safety rules and procedures.
This role is ideal for a motivated leader with proven experience on high-voltage (HV) infrastructure projects who holds appropriate BESC, Persons, and Competent Person (CP) authorisations.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all on-site activities in line with the National Grid Safety Rules and Construction Design & Management (CDM) Regulations .
- Oversee site execution of civils, electrical, and commissioning works for National Grid substations or overhead lines.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, National Grid site representatives, and subcontractors to ensure smooth execution.
- Maintain strict compliance with National Grid's TP135 and NSI safety procedures.
- Ensure daily site briefings, risk assessments, permits to work , and control documents are in place and understood by all.
- Act as the Competent Person (CP) on site, if authorised, ensuring the safety from the system process is followed rigorously.
- Liaise with National Grid Control Room and SAPs (Senior Authorised Persons) regarding isolations and energisations.
- Manage resources, site logistics, environmental controls , and site documentation.
- Monitor performance against programme, escalate delays, and ensure remedial actions.
- Lead on health, safety, quality, and environmental (HSQE) standards and reporting.
- Maintain accurate site records including diaries, RAMS, inductions, toolbox talks, NCRs, and ITPs.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Proven experience managing substation or overhead line works on National Grid or DNO networks .
- Hold valid National Grid Person & BESC (Basic Electrical Safety Competence) certification.
- Competent Person (CP) status under National Grid Safety Rules (TP137) or ability to obtain it rapidly.
- SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) - CITB certified .
- EUSR registration including National Water Hygiene , SHEA Power , and/or LV/HV authorisations .
- Strong knowledge of TP137/TP135/NSI standards , CDM 2015, and HSE regulations.
- First Aid at Work (3-day course) - valid and in-date.
- CSCS Black or Gold card (Manager or Supervisor level).
- Full UK Driving Licence and willingness to travel to various sites across the region.
Desirable Attributes
- Strong leadership, communication, and coordination skills.
- Experience managing multiple subcontractor packages.
- Working knowledge of temporary works , environmental controls , and quality assurance .

- Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts , project controls, and stakeholder management.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable Attributes
- Chartered status (e.g. CEng, MCIOB, MAPM ) or working toward it.
- Proficient in Primavera P6 , MS Project , or similar planning software.
- Experience delivering turnkey HV or substation works as a principal contractor.
- Ability to contribute to tendering, work winning, and client presentations.
- Experience managing commissioning and energisation activities in regulated environments.

One of our clients are looking for a Managing QS to assist them on a National Grid substation project based in Cornwall.
Set-up:
* ASAP start
* 6-month initial contract
* Working on National Grid substation project
* Cornwall based
* Hybrid role - 3 days on site
* Inside IR35
Key Responsibilities:
* Needed for number crunching, look at cost forecasting and support MQS, take costs, look at programmes
* Prepare tender and contract documents, including bills of quantities with the architect and/or the client.
* Undertake cost analysis for repair and maintenance project work.
* Assist in establishing a client's requirements and undertake feasibility studies.
* Perform risk, value management, and cost control.
* Identify, analyse, and develop responses to commercial risks.
* Prepare and analyse costings for tenders.
Client requirements:
* Strong NEC knowledge
* Previously worked for Tier 1 contractor
* Previously worked on relevant project - OHL/substations/utilities/nuclear/water etc
* Proven experience as Senior QS
