About The RoleJoin our Customer Network Development (CND) team at National Grid, where we're focused on connecting new and existing generation and demand customers to the energy network. As a Power System Engineering Graduate, you'll gain hands-on experience in planning, designing, and delivering customer connections that support the UK's energy transition.
CND is responsible for building connection offers that include the necessary contractual and technical requirements, identifying appropriate technical designs, and managing the efficient delivery of these connections. The team works closely with customers and industry partners, ensuring compliance with relevant codes and frameworks while continuously improving the connections process to reduce lead times and enhance customer satisfaction.
What You'll Be DoingAs a Power System Engineering graduate, you may be involved in:
- Supporting customer connection projects by conducting technical studies and assessing the impact of new connections on the network.
- Assisting in the planning and design of electrical power systems to ensure reliable generation, transmission, and distribution.
- Collaborating with system operators, regulatory bodies, and internal teams to solve connection challenges and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Our Graduate ProgrammeAs you'll be joining our 18-month graduate programme, you'll have a tailored development pathway to support you as you develop a wide range of leadership, business, and technical skills. You'll attend in-person and virtual development sessions throughout your programme to equip you with the essential skills required, as you begin your career at National Grid. We're committed to the personal development of our colleagues so as well as the support from your line manager as you navigate your new role, you'll also have access to 121 coaching and a mentor, from a previous cohort to help you transition from campus to corporate life.
All graduates complete the core development programme to develop key skills such as how to make an impact, giving feedback and presentation skills. Aligned to this role is our Engineering pathway and as part of this you'll develop further key technical skills aligned to your role as well as important learning modules such as working safely. If relevant to your career aspirations, you will be able to access Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) membership and seek support from a National Grid IET mentor to help you secure your chartership.
We believe in the importance of getting as much on-the-job experience as possible and to do this, you will complete three 6-month placements, across the UK, designed to deepen your understanding of your speciality but to also broaden your knowledge of our business. At the end of your 18-month programme you'll return to your initial placement area to kickstart your superpowered career.
What you'll need to applyYou'll need to achieve, or be working towards, a minimum 2:2 degree in Engineering, Maths, Computer Science, Data Science. Overview
We are seeking an experienced Network & Infrastructure Engineer to design, implement, and support secure, scalable, and high-performing technology environments across our organisation.
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the cutting edge of Smart Building applications, IoT, IT/OT convergence to integrate building auto; HVAC, lighting, security and IoT with enterprise IT Systems.
This is a hybrid technical and stakeholder-facing role, combining hands-on engineering expertise with project delivery and business engagement skills. You’ll lead network and infrastructure initiatives end-to-end — from understanding user needs and translating them into technical designs, through to deployment, documentation, and optimisation.
The ideal candidate will have a strong grounding in network and security technologies, cloud infrastructure, and project management, with the ability to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
Key Responsibilities
Network & Infrastructure Design
- Design, deploy, and maintain network infrastructure including LAN/WAN, wireless, VPN, and firewalls.
- Configure and manage network segmentation, VLANs, and routing to support secure and efficient data flow.
- Oversee server, storage, and virtualisation environments (on-premise and/or cloud).
- Implement and maintain cloud connectivity and hybrid networking (Azure/AWS VPNs, ExpressRoute, etc.).
Security & Compliance
- Ensure network and infrastructure security align with organisational policies and standards (ISO27001, GDPR, etc.).
- Configure and monitor firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and endpoint security solutions.
- Support identity and access management, MFA, and secure network access policies.
- Conduct regular vulnerability assessments, patch management, and system hardening.
Project Management & Delivery
- Lead infrastructure and network projects from scoping through delivery, ensuring quality, cost, and time objectives are met.
- Define technical requirements and translate business needs into deliverable solutions.
- Develop and maintain project documentation including architecture diagrams, risk registers, and deployment guides.
- Manage vendors, suppliers, and third-party contractors to ensure aligned delivery outcomes.
- Apply structured project management methodologies (Agile, Prince2, or hybrid).
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration
- Act as a trusted advisor to internal teams and business units, gathering and translating technical requirements into actionable solutions.
- Collaborate closely with IT, Operations, Security, and external partners to ensure seamless integration and delivery.
- Communicate complex technical concepts in clear, non-technical language for diverse audiences.
- Provide updates and reports on project progress, risks, and mitigations to leadership and stakeholders.
Operations & Support
- Provide third-line support for network and infrastructure incidents and escalations.
- Monitor system performance and implement improvements to enhance reliability and scalability.
- Maintain detailed documentation of infrastructure, configurations, and changes.
- Participate in an on-call or escalation rota as required.
