W&P Partners are working exclusively on behalf of a leading higher education institution seeking to appoint a newly qualified Commercial Legal Counsel. This is an excellent opportunity for a junior lawyer to gain high-quality in-house experience in a supportive and collaborative legal team environment.
Reporting to the General Counsel the successful candidate will support on a wide range of commercial contracts and legal matters across the University’s operations. This role will involve direct engagement with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring contracts are effectively reviewed, negotiated, and managed, while maintaining compliance with financial and governance frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Review, draft, negotiate, and advise on a wide variety of commercial contracts, including academic partnership agreements, research collaborations, IT/software contracts, licensing agreements, consultancy arrangements, and procurement documentation.
- Manage a personal portfolio of contracts from instruction through to execution, under supervision.
- Provide legal support across departments including Research & Enterprise, Apprenticeships, Marketing, International Office, and IT.
- Identify and mitigate contractual and practical risks.
- Liaise with internal clients and external partners to ensure information is accurate and complete.
- Assist with contract administration, including maintaining registers, filing, and ensuring proper authorisation and execution procedures are followed.
- Support the Head of Legal Services and Senior Legal Counsel with wider team initiatives and administrative duties.
About You
We are seeking applications from newly qualified solicitors (NQ–1PQE) or equivalent, who have trained in a law firm or in-house environment and can demonstrate strong skills in commercial contracts.
Essential skills and experience:
- Experience in drafting, reviewing, and advising on contracts during training or post-qualification.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present clear advice and negotiate effectively.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and manage competing deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word.
- A collaborative team player with a proactive, can-do attitude and a willingness to learn.

- Conducting site inspections and preparing technical reports
- Diagnosing defects and preparing Schedules of Works

- Contributing to team development and mentoring junior colleagues
What you'll need to succeed
You'll be an MRICS Chartered Building Surveyor or working towards chartership, with a building surveying-related RICs accredited degree and strong technical expertise.
You'll need to demonstrate:
- Extensive knowledge of building construction and legislation
- Experience in contract administration and project planning
- Ability to manage your own caseload and make decisions under pressure
- Strong communication skills and empathy for clients
- A full UK driving licence (site travel required)

The role would see a Surveyor joining an commercial and residential landlord for a position within their Commercial Industrial Team. The business own portfolio of assets across London, the South East and the North of England.
About the Firm
- A private London based property business which own and manage a large portfolio of industrial assets (multi-let estates, warehouses) and residential properties in prime Central London locations.
- Strong focus on growing its industrial property holdings in London and the South East, with recent acquisitions in Surrey, Essex, Kent and Sussex.
- Also engages in joint venture development, mixed-use schemes and development projects alongside its income property business, while maintaining its charitable foundation.
Duties Include
- Monitoring portfolio performance, tracking income, occupancy, and asset KPIs.
- Managing lease events and overseeing rent reviews, renewals, breaks, and expiries.
- Supporting lettings and marketing, working with agents to reduce voids and securing new tenants.
- Helping to maintain tenant relationships, acting as a key point of contact to support retention and satisfaction.
- Delivery of asset business plans through implementing strategies to enhance value, rental income, and ESG performance.
- Engaging with clients and stakeholders by attending client meetings, preparing reports, and presenting asset performance.
- Conducting market research and analysis, monitoring industrial property trends to inform investment and management decisions.
Preferred Candidate
- Experience in Real Estate, ideally industrial.
- Types of prior work experience in roles such Property Management, Asset Management, Leasing, Landlord and Tenant works.
- Candidates will require a driving license.
- Either have completed a RICS Accredited degree or be MRICS Qualified.
