As the RS Environment Fire and Occupational Safety Engineer, you will partner with depot teams to drive a strong culture of safety and environmental excellence. You’ll provide expert advice, guidance, and operational support to managers, ensuring compliance with UK and EU legislation while continually improving processes and performance. Your responsibilities will span across Occupational Safety, Environment, and Fire Safety — from managing ISO certifications, safety management systems, and compliance audits, to leading initiatives that reduce environmental impact and enhance fire protection standards.
This is a permanent role is based at our Temple Mills depot in Leyton based on site.

We're looking for someone to:
- Lead initiatives that strengthen a proactive safety culture across the depot and drive continuous improvement.
- Oversee a risk-based programme of audits, inspections, and safety tours to ensure compliance with UK, EU, and international standards.
- Manage investigations into incidents, hazards, and near misses, ensuring lessons are captured and acted upon.
- Maintain and improve Safety Management System procedures in line with ISO14001, ISO45001, and evolving regulations.
- Develop and implement strategies to reduce environmental impact, manage waste compliance, lead emergency planning, and monitor KPIs.
- Act as the depot’s lead for fire safety and protection, ensuring robust risk assessments, compliance plans, training, and regular drills.
- Provide practical training, coaching, and support to managers and teams to build ownership of safety and environmental responsibilities.
- Share best practices and identify opportunities for innovation in health, safety, environment, and fire protection.
Requirements
You’ll need:
- Substantial experience in health, safety, and environment management, ideally in rail, engineering, transport, or another high-risk industrial environment.
- Recognised qualifications such as NEBOSH Diploma, IOSH Level 6 Diploma, or NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety (or equivalent).
- Advanced knowledge and hands-on experience of ISO14001 and ISO45001 standards, audits, and certifications.
- Strong understanding of UK and continental fire safety regulations, with experience leading compliance programmes and fire drills.
- Confidence in risk assessment, incident investigation, data analysis, and regulatory reporting.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence managers, staff, auditors, and external bodies.
- Fluent English with excellent communication and presentation skills
