About the Role:
Are you passionate about the outdoors and inspiring young people through adventure, exploration, and experiential learning? We are looking for a dynamic, energetic Outdoor Education Instructor to join our team!
In this role, you will lead and support outdoor learning sessions designed to build confidence, teamwork, independence, and resilience in children and young people. Sessions may include bushcraft, forest school activities, team-building challenges, environmental education, outdoor sports, and adventure-based learning.
You'll have the chance to work with a diverse range of students, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping to engage them in meaningful learning beyond the classroom.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan and deliver high-quality outdoor learning sessions and activities
Inspire young people through positive role-modelling and hands-on learning
Promote personal development, teamwork, and wellbeing through outdoor experiences
Risk assess all activities and ensure safety at all times
Work closely with teaching staff, support teams, and external providers where needed
Contribute to a positive, nurturing environment for every child
About You:
We're looking for someone who is:
Enthusiastic, creative, and passionate about outdoor education
A strong communicator and natural motivator of young people
Adaptable, with the ability to engage students of all backgrounds and abilities
Confident leading groups outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions
Able to work as part of a team and independently
Desirable:
Experience working with children or young people, particularly those with SEN or SEMH
Outdoor learning qualifications (e.g., Forest School, Bushcraft, Mountain Leader, Duke of Edinburgh, etc.)
First Aid and Safeguarding training (training can be provided if needed)

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Unqualified Outdoor Education Teacher / Outdoor Learning Instructor to join our dedicated team in Barnoldswick. This crucial initial 1-year fixed-term contract offers a unique opportunity to deliver engaging and impactful outdoor learning experiences to our students, fostering their resilience, confidence, and connection with nature.
This role is perfect for individuals with significant practical outdoor experience, youth work backgrounds, or relevant instructor qualifications who are keen to develop their teaching skills within an educational setting. Key Responsibilities:
Design & Deliver Outdoor Sessions: Plan, prepare, and lead a diverse range of outdoor education activities for groups and/or 1:1 students (e.g., Forest School sessions, bushcraft, navigation, environmental studies, team challenges, local excursions).
Curriculum Integration: Work with teachers to link outdoor activities to the curriculum, enhancing learning across subjects (e.g., Maths, English, Science, PSHE).
Student Engagement: Inspire and motivate students of all abilities and backgrounds, ensuring their active participation and enjoyment in the outdoor environment.
Risk Management & Safety: Conduct thorough risk assessments, ensure the safe use of equipment, and adhere strictly to all health and safety policies and procedures.
Pastoral Support: Provide informal pastoral support, building positive relationships with students and promoting their well-being and positive behaviour.
Progress Monitoring: Observe and informally assess student progress and engagement in outdoor activities, providing feedback to class teachers and the SENCo where relevant.
Who We Are Looking For:
We are seeking a highly motivated, adaptable, and personable individual with a genuine commitment to outdoor education and youth development. While Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is NOT required for this role, successful candidates will demonstrate:
Essential Skills & Experience:
Significant Outdoor Experience: Proven practical experience in leading outdoor activities or working in an outdoor education setting (e.g., as an outdoor instructor, youth worker, Forest School practitioner, Duke of Edinburgh's Award leader).
Passion for Learning: A deep passion for outdoor pursuits and a strong belief in their educational and personal development benefits for children and young people.
Youth Engagement: Experience working with children or young people, with the ability to build strong rapport and manage group dynamics effectively.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, able to clearly explain activities and engage with students, staff, and parents.
Adaptability & Creativity: The ability to adapt activities to suit diverse learning needs and weather conditions, demonstrating creativity in problem-solving.
Safety Conscious: A robust understanding of health and safety in outdoor environments and the ability to conduct basic risk assessments.
Resilience & Enthusiasm: A positive, resilient, and enthusiastic attitude, comfortable working outdoors in all weathers.
Safeguarding: A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people (an Enhanced DBS check will be required).
Desirable (but not essential):
Relevant outdoor qualifications (e.g., Forest School Leader Level 2 or 3, Mountain Training awards, NGB awards in specific activities like paddlesports, climbing).
Current Outdoor First Aid qualification.
Experience working with students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) or Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
Minibus driving licence (D1 or willing to gain).

Role Overview:

- Oversee and deliver the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme, managing all stages from planning through to supervising expeditions.
