The Role

We're looking for someone curious about packaging with good problem-solving skills, a passion for sustainability and a willingness to learn to join our growing business in a newly created role. The right person would need to be a highly motivated individual who is interested in building a career in packaging within the vibrant, varied, and exciting world of confectionery in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG).

As part of the development team and reporting into the packaging development manager, you will play a key role within an expanding packaging team within the business. You will work closely with the packaging development manager and our product developers to create packaging solutions that are innovative, fit for purpose, commercially viable and responsible for our growing customer base. You will be given learning opportunities and encouraged to develop your skills and grow into an evolving role.

The Detail

As our packaging developer, you will need to be open to new ideas to meet the business requirements and create market-leading packaging in a highly innovative sector. Your key responsibilities will include:

Creating visual and physical mock-ups for customer presentations.

• Attending print runs when required and signing off proofs for key projects to ensure smooth delivery of high-quality packaging.

• Building relationships with key packaging suppliers and manufacturing partners and liaising with our customer print & packaging contacts to ensure the process is aligned and smooth from concept to launch.

• Managing technical aspects of packaging development, including requesting the right first-time cutter guides, print information, packaging specifications and relevant compliance information to maintain our internal systems.

Supporting the transit test process to ensure all packaging is fit for purpose and robust.

• Keeping up to date with emerging packaging trends and new technologies for use when developing new packaging and regularly updating the team.

Regularly reviewing current packaging and identifying where value can be optimised or current formats can be improved.

Other roles you will undertake include:

Helping the team prepare for key meetings with customers.

Feeding into the New Product Development (NPD) process as a key member of the development team.

• Lead independent research projects focused on the design, synthesis, and characterization of new materials.

• PhD in Material Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of post-doctoral or industrial research experience in material science.
• Demonstrated expertise in material synthesis, processing, and characterization techniques.
• Strong theoretical understanding of solid-state physics, chemistry, and materials behavior.
• Proficiency in using advanced analytical instrumentation and data analysis software.
• Proven track record of successful research project leadership and publication in reputable scientific journals.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly.
• Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.
• Experience with computational materials science tools (e.g., DFT, MD simulations) is a significant advantage.
• Strong commitment to scientific ethics and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Working in a multidisciplinary team in a GMP environment, performing routine and non-routine analysis of samples such as raw materials, excipients, APIs, drug products and other types of samples
• Preparing reagents and solutions for use in analysis
• Performing analytical testing of samples using chromatography and other wet chemistry techniques
• Development and validation of analytical methods that are appropriate for the requirements of the individual project, under supervision.
• Supporting the team by undertaking training and performing projects in physical properties and materials characterisation areas using techniques such as laser diffraction, PXRD, microscopy, thermal analysis etc.
• Following scientific methods, protocols, SOPs and Pharmacopoeia accurately and independently
• Providing high quality, right first-time, scientifically sound reports and CofAs to clients, meeting their deadlines
• Processing and interpreting data, performing calculations, drawing conclusions and reporting, highlighting aberrant or suspect results, and working with supervisor to investigate
• Presenting results verbally and in writing, both internally and externally, in a professional manner
• Maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical instruments, and solving challenging problems either independently or with assistance from senior personnel
• Performing experiments and documentation in accordance SOPs, data integrity and good documentation practices, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) principles
• Raising and reporting any OOS and deviations, assisting with investigations and CAPAs, and contributing to laboratory audits as required
• Keeping up-to-date with any technological and methodological advancements to support future projects and increase lab capabilities
• Organising and managing multiple projects simultaneously if required, working in a flexible manner and able to switch priorities at short notice
• Sharing knowledge and expertise to foster a collaborative environment

Skills, Education & Qualifications

• PhD preferred in a relevant scientific field (such as Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Forensics), or substantial practical work experience
• A minimum of one year relevant experience of analysis in a pharmaceutical testing laboratory, or equivalent
• Working knowledge of a wide range of techniques such as HPLC/UPLC, laser diffraction, microscopy, thermal analysis, PXRD etc.
• A strong foundation of basic principles of chemistry and separation science is essential
• Experience in method development and validation is desirable but not required
• A strong understanding of the pharmaceutical development process and the industry would be advantageous
• Experience with Empower, OpenLAB, ChemStation or similar software
• Knowledge or experience of working within GxP regulations
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to spot inconsistencies
