Role: Power Systems Engineer
Location : Leeds
About AssetCool
AssetCool is addressing one of the most pressing challenges in the global energy transition—grid congestion. By combining cutting-edge grid robotics with breakthrough materials science, our technology transforms the physical performance of the grid in situ, increasing current-carrying capacity by up to 30%, at just 5% of the cost and in a tenth of the time compared to conventional approaches.
In addition to enhancing capacity, our solutions tackle other grid constraints including corrosion, electrical noise, and enable the collection of high-value data to build accurate, predictive digital twins. This technology is proving transformative and is being adopted at an accelerating pace, with deployments across Canada, Slovenia, the UK, and the USA, and a strong global deployment pipeline.
AssetCool is a fast-growing company with plans to more than double in size over the next six months. Backed by international investors from the US, mainland Europe, and the UK, we are proud to be one of the most innovation-focused companies in the UK energy sector.
We’re looking for ambitious, mission-driven individuals who are excited to work hard alongside their colleagues to build and deploy world-leading technology that tackles some of the planet’s most urgent infrastructure challenges.
Role Overview
We are looking for a Power Systems Engineer to lead the integration of high-voltage safety and operational design principles as we adapt our robotic systems for live-line deployment. This role is essential to AssetCool's 18-month roadmap to deliver safe, reliable robotic solutions for energised transmission infrastructure. You will apply power systems knowledge to support design, testing, and operational integration, ensuring compliance with electrical standards and utility expectations.
This newly created role will work closely with robotics, coatings, and utility engagement teams to deliver safe and robust robotic applications for the grid.
Key Responsibilities
Live-Line Adaptation and Design
- Apply power systems knowledge to support the safe integration of robotic systems on live transmission lines
- Define insulation, clearance, and shielding requirements in line with system voltage and network conditions
- Evaluate system exposure to electric fields, transient voltages, and grid-induced conditions
HV Experimentation & Validation
- Plan and design high-voltage experiments for validation of robotic systems in lab and field conditions
- Develop test procedures, safety protocols, and instrumentation strategies for HV trials
- Conduct or interpret simulations (e.g. power flow, induced voltages, FEM) to assess design performance
- Support system-level analysis and documentation for utility engagement and compliance
Standards and Compliance
- Ensure integration meets relevant utility and international standards (e.g. ASTM, IEEE, IEC)
- Contribute to risk assessments, technical safety reviews, and method statements for field use
- Work with utilities to align product development with network protection and operational requirements
Cross-Team Collaboration
- Work with electrical, mechanical, and robotics engineers to incorporate grid-level safety principles into product design
- Translate power system conditions and live-line challenges into clear engineering requirements
- Communicate risk mitigation strategies to multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders
Required Skills & Experience
- Degree (or higher) in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering with a focus on high-voltage systems
- Minimum 5 years’ experience working with HV transmission infrastructure, equipment design, or grid-related systems
- Strong knowledge of HV insulation, clearances, shielding, and induced voltage risks
- Experience designing or validating hardware for use near or on energised infrastructure
- Familiarity with field exposure modelling, electrostatic/electromagnetic analysis, and protection strategies
- Confident working cross-functionally and translating HV concepts into robust engineering requirements
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Experience working directly with TSOs/DSOs or on grid-connected equipment projects
- Understanding of corona discharge, electromagnetic interference, and transient voltages
- Experience designing or supporting high-voltage lab or field experiments
- Strong documentation skills including technical specifications, testing reports, and compliance documents
- Practical understanding of grid safety, equipment certification, and reliability standards
