We are currently seeking experienced Power Systems Consultants to work for our client to support their mission to drive Net Zero innovation. The role will be working across a team of engineers, researchers, and policy experts tackling some of the UK’s most complex energy challenges. From cutting-edge modelling to Smart Grid tech, your work will directly influence the transition to a low-carbon power system.
Key Responsibilities:
The roles report to the Practice Manager - Power Systems within the Systems Integration Team. The key responsibilities will be to:
- Act as Technical Lead/Work package Lead on projects, providing power systems subject matter expertise, setting the scope of work and providing oversight and technical assurance for projects. The project areas include Transmission and distribution networks, Flexibility services, Operability, DSO transition and Smart Grid technologies
- Work with multi-disciplinary teams in the business and external partners and stakeholders. The role within projects will vary, ranging from providing technical expertise on the power system to reviewing project deliverables and shaping innovative solutions.
- Lead/support the development of innovation priorities and bid proposals for different funding opportunities including Network Innovation Allowance (NIA) and Strategic Innovation Funding (SIF).
- Lead/support the thought leadership on a range of challenges to meet Net Zero such as Electricity markets and network charging, future operability challenges associated with the integration of renewable technology, the role of flexibility and storage and the future role of power systems in the Net Zero journey, including transmission, distribution and cross vector.
- Lead/support the representation of power systems within the companies modelling tools, which may involve the construction of network models, analysis of partner-provided data and/or software integration of power systems models with others.
- Preparation of written materials including technical reports, briefing materials, discussion papers and consultation responses.
Experience Required:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (higher degree advantageous)
- Strong knowledge of the GB power system, with expertise in design, operation, or network planning
- Skilled in power system tools (IPSA, DIgSILENT, Plexos, or similar)
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Chartered Engineer or working towards it (desirable)

**Core Responsibilities**
+ Generate Single Line Diagrams for AC or DC system Architectures.
+ Support or perform Power System studies and analysis using simulation software, such as MATLAB, or DigSilent, or eTAP, or PSCAD, or PSSE.
+ Studies include, but not limited to, Short Circuit, Load Flow, Harmonic, Transient, Insulation co-ordination analysis, Arc & protection co-ordination.
+ Generate main and balance of plant equipment specifications, functional and test documents, for LV or HV Switchboards, Generators, Cables, Converters, Transformers, Motors, auxiliaries and more.
+ Provide technical support, support commissioning and through life in-service support.
+ Capture requirements to ensure validation and verification.
+ Ability to produce clear and concise engineering documentation.
+ Ensuring Power System designs comply with requirements, relevant health & safety, international standards, and class society rules where applicable.
**We are looking for a professional engineer who:**
+ Has applicable, transferrable equipment or systems level knowledge & experience, with ideally industrial, marine or naval defence domain experience.
+ Candidates with demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas-Power System modelling, generator excitation systems, Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD) are encouraged to apply.
+ Can work initiatively on challenges, problem solving, ambitious, highly motivated and driven to succeed with a lean mindset.
+ Has working knowledge of marine classification society, IEC, MIL or DEF standards.
+ Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
+ Knowledge of Engineering lifecycle processes is a plus.

**Job Description**
**Essential Responsibilities**
+ Will work with the existing program Engineering Manager to take on day to day Lead power systems design and test activities for the delivery of the associated project electrical Systems.
+ Will coordinate all power system design and test related engineering activities during the Project, phases. Including power system modelling, auxiliary systems, equipment specification alongside power system test specifications, results analysis and reporting.
+ Responsible for deliver full systems design installation and test (AC and DC power system architecture , power generation and distribution, protection, power conversion, motors and energy stores, cabling, control systems) ensuring the overall design meets customer, contract and regulatory requirements.
+ Establish and maintain engineering quality control system for the project test phases.
+ Establish and manage contract design documentation. Produce design documentation and test reports as necessary.
+ Liaise with Service Engineer/ Platform Engineering, Technology and Value Engineering, and Supply Chain as appropriate in order to support the project and the business.
+ Liaise with other GE businesses, sub-contractors and customers as appropriate in order to support the project and the business.
