**Job Description**

The Power Systems Engineering team helps solve exciting problems using advanced analytical tools and develops safe, efficient and operational performance-led solutions. The Power Systems Engineer could be involved throughout the tendering phase, detail design & development, procurement, manufacturing, test and commissioning stages of projects, and possibly delivering in-service design and obsolescence support. You will use and develop your key skills, knowledge and experience to support and influence the development and delivery of class leading Power System solutions.
**Core Responsibilities**
+ Generate Single Line Diagrams for AC or DC system Architectures.
+ Support or perform Power System studies and analysis using simulation software, such as MATLAB, or DigSilent, or eTAP, or PSCAD, or PSSE.
+ Studies include, but not limited to, Short Circuit, Load Flow, Harmonic, Transient, Insulation co-ordination analysis, Arc & protection co-ordination.
+ Generate main and balance of plant equipment specifications, functional and test documents, for LV or HV Switchboards, Generators, Cables, Converters, Transformers, Motors, auxiliaries and more.
+ Provide technical support, support commissioning and through life in-service support.
+ Capture requirements to ensure validation and verification.
+ Ability to produce clear and concise engineering documentation.
+ Ensuring Power System designs comply with requirements, relevant health & safety, international standards, and class society rules where applicable.
**We are looking for a professional engineer who:**
+ Has applicable, transferrable equipment or systems level knowledge & experience, with ideally industrial, marine or naval defence domain experience.
+ Candidates with demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas-Power System modelling, generator excitation systems, Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD) are encouraged to apply.
+ Can work initiatively on challenges, problem solving, ambitious, highly motivated and driven to succeed with a lean mindset.
+ Has working knowledge of marine classification society, IEC, MIL or DEF standards.
+ Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
+ Knowledge of Engineering lifecycle processes is a plus.
+ Willing to travel within UK and overseas for short-term working.
**Essential Qualifications**
+ Minimum of a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant subject but relevant experience will also be considered.
+ Working towards or hold CEng qualification

**Job Description**
**Essential Responsibilities**
+ Will work with the existing program Engineering Manager to take on day to day Lead power systems design and test activities for the delivery of the associated project electrical Systems.
+ Will coordinate all power system design and test related engineering activities during the Project, phases. Including power system modelling, auxiliary systems, equipment specification alongside power system test specifications, results analysis and reporting.
+ Responsible for deliver full systems design installation and test (AC and DC power system architecture , power generation and distribution, protection, power conversion, motors and energy stores, cabling, control systems) ensuring the overall design meets customer, contract and regulatory requirements.
+ Establish and maintain engineering quality control system for the project test phases.
+ Establish and manage contract design documentation. Produce design documentation and test reports as necessary.
+ Liaise with Service Engineer/ Platform Engineering, Technology and Value Engineering, and Supply Chain as appropriate in order to support the project and the business.
+ Liaise with other GE businesses, sub-contractors and customers as appropriate in order to support the project and the business.

**Qualifications/Requirements**
+ Degree or equivalent in electrical/electronic /control engineering or related subject.
+ Chartered Engineer or equivalent proven record of continuous professional development.

What will you do?

  • Lead annual forecasting, working with team members and consultants to prepare Distribution Future Energy Scenarios (DFES) and load analysis, identifying future network constraints.
  • Provide essential inputs for business plans, price control updates, and regulatory submissions, using data-driven techniques and the National Energy System Operator’s Regional Strategic Energy Plans.
  • Ensure accurate reporting of forecasts with strong attention to detail and effective application of data.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, offering technical direction to engineers delivering regulatory reports and supporting DSO commitments.
  • Thrive in a complex, fast-paced environment, adapting quickly to new information and evolving requirements.

Key Competencies

  • Lead and improve regional forecasts, using data and stakeholder input to anticipate future network needs.
  • Analyse network capacity at all voltage levels and oversee System Forecasting engineers.
  • Shape the long-term forecasting strategy, developing new models, tools, and automated analysis methods.
  • Publish and share customer needs, load forecasts, and network insights to improve stakeholder access and experience.
  • Represent Northern Powergrid in industry forums and lead stakeholder engagement events.
  • Act as a role model and mentor, supporting team development while bringing strong planning, organisation, and technical curiosity.

What qualifications and experience should you have?

  • Level 5/6 STEM qualification (or Level 4 with 3+ years’ relevant experience).
  • Industry experience with energy transition, decarbonisation policies, and distribution networks.
  • Knowledge of statutory, regulatory, and industry standards.
  • Strong analytical, forecasting, and modelling skills, including risk and sensitivity analysis.
  • Proficient in data handling, software models, and IT tools.
  • Excellent collaboration, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Opportunity

In this role, you'll lead the development of customer decarbonisation and load forecasts, guiding how we plan, invest in, and prepare the electricity network for the transition to net zero. With more rapid decarbonisation and a shift toward a more strategic approach to network development, you will provide strategic direction and drive the transformation of forecast data into an increasingly critical tool for shaping future network operations and planning.

You'll work closely with regional teams to incorporate local intelligence and share forecasting insights with external stakeholders, ensuring the approach remains firmly rooted in the needs of the region. A key objective will be to develop tailored information to support engineering colleagues, ensuring the network is ready for the growing role of electricity in decarbonisation across the Northeast, Yorkshire, and North Lincolnshire.
