Role Description

This is a full-time hybrid role for a Product Design Engineer based in Derby. The role involves the design and development of products, including mechanical engineering and CAD work. The Product Design Engineer will engage in ideation, prototyping, and refining product designs through to manufacture. Collaboration with cross-functional teams and clients to ensure successful project outcomes is essential. Some work from home is acceptable, although presence in the Derby office will be required for specific tasks.

Requirements

Education – Minimum of Bachelor’s degree or similar experience in product design or related fields.

Experience – Minimum 2-3 years in relevant industry.

Design for Manufacture – Previous experience designing products for production, experience with a variety of manufacturing techniques is preferred. Ideally within a consultancy setting.


Software Skills –

Solidworks - Proficient in the use of Solidworks for concept generation, product detailing and engineering drawings. (Solidworks FEA/CFD experience is beneficial)

Keyshot - Experience using Keyshot for rendering and production of high quality visuals to communicate ideas.

Microsoft Office - Comfortable using Excel, Word and Powerpoint for internal and external communication.

Adobe Suite - Familiarity with Adobe products such as Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign.


Basic Electronics – experience working with electronics and prototyping with Arduino/raspberry pi preferred.

The role is full time – within our stunning studio. However, we offer flexi-time around our core hours and a half day on Friday.

**Responsibilities**
+ Overseeing all aspects of product innovation, development, and technical testing.
+ Collaborate with the segment Team to Identify emerging markets, technologies, and product/service opportunities to drive strategic growth.
+ Contribute to Product Line Simplification (PLS) efforts to enhance operational efficiency, reduce complexity, and help the business deliver greater value with fewer resources.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

+ Verify designs using investigative skills and/or functional testing, interpret results, drive conclusions and assess risk

+ Support the investigations into New Products Introduction and Current Product support

**QUALIFICATIONS**
To be successful in this role you will need the following:

+ Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills, with good level of expertise using Microsoft applications.
+ Experience in 3D modelling software such as Catia, Creo, Solidworks etc. is an advantage
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present across a wide range of stakeholders.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Product Design & Validation student to join our team specializing in Engineering for our On-Highway Engineering Services in Darlington. During your placement with us, you will learn how a major global organization operates, gaining the tools and exposure you will need to become an expert in the industry and **power your potential!**
This role is available to candidates who qualify for a placement year and will commence on **Summer 2026.**
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
+ The main purpose of this role is to assist with the creation of design specifications considering application, cost, weight, performance, product life, ease of manufacture, ease of assembly and service requirements
+ Verify designs using examination and/or functional testing, interpret results, drive conclusions and assess risk
+ Apply engineering and/or scientific skills and knowledge to develop experience in creating engineering solutions. Development of these skills will enable you to participate in and contribute to design and safety reviews
+ Support the investigations into New Products Introduction and Current Product support
+ Collaborate with other functions such as Operations, Sourcing and Marketing, to ensure stakeholders requirements are met throughout the design and development process
+ Validation tasks will also include record keeping, investigating test cell data, making test plans, drafting test reports
**QUALIFICATIONS**
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
+ We are looking for a wide range of applicants studying towards a Bachelor or Master's degree from across all Engineering & STEM related subjects and the degree programme must include a 12-month industry placement
+ Has clear thought processes and can show a rational approach to tasks, challenges, hobbies etc
+ PC literacy - knowledge of MS Office and be experience in 3D modelling software such as Catia, Creo, Solidworks etc
+ Has experience in, and can demonstrate, relevant examples of Cummins core values e.g. voluntary work, community involvement activities, working with disadvantaged groups, charity related support, delivering extraordinary results, teamwork, competencies and outside education experiences
